What’s the deal with socks now?

I’m your standard mid 30s millennial. I wouldn’t consider myself ‘fashionable’ but I like clothes and enjoy looking well put together in any given situation.

As spring arrives, we’re about to hit the yearly moment when I move from boots worn with everything, to white trainers worn with everything - usually fairly plain, slim, low rise lace ups.

I’ve finally got my head around jeans (I still love my skinnies but am embracing wide leg, barrel and boyfriend) but I’ve heard trainer socks are now the height of uncool??

So what DOES look acceptable when your trousers/dress leave your ankle exposed?

I am tall with big feet so things that look cute on dainty feet make me look like a clown, so I fear the wrong socks will add to this issue.

Photos and links of acceptable socks greatly appreciated!

Don’t they ladder though? I’ll admit I sometimes wear nude tights, but if I wore 5 denier I’d have to replace them every time, which would be expensive as well as unfashionable!

They’re actually a lot stronger than you’d think. It’s a special kind of weave that they use for them. Also, because they are so fine they sit very close to your skin, and it’s not as easy for them to catch as thicker deniers would be. As long as you are careful putting them on if you have long nails I find they last well. With them coming in sizes now it’s much better than the old one size fits nobody all. I usually carry a spare pair in my bag just in case, but I’ve never had to use them.

I’m a millennial and I still wear trainer socks. I can’t get it out of my head that regular socks look totally ridiculous! Especially if wearing a dress, I’d feel like a primary school kid 😂

Me too ! No one is taking my trainer socks away from me !

I am old. I never wore leg warmers or puff ball skirts and didn't give a flying how fashionable they were.

I reduced an entire Miss Selfridge changing room to helpless laughter in the early 80s when I tried a dress with a rara skirt. I think that was the day I stopped caring about fashion and leant heavily into style.

Oh Miss Selfridge. I had everything with that lip print on it - pyjamas, make-up…
The make-up was amazing.
Yep, my ra-ra was fuschia pink with black polka dots I loved it.
What a time to be alive that was….

I have loads like this in various neutral shades. I'm late 30s, I have always found ankle socks annoying though so I am glad that crew socks are more fashionable. I mainly wear them under jeans though so you can't really see them, or for actual sports with shorts. I wouldn't really wear trainers and a dress together, I prefer a sandal or flat shoe (without socks...)

Thank you for the links!

Ok, so do I need different socks to complement different coloured dresses? And then with cropped jeans, doesn’t it all look kind of weird with jeans, then a bit of calf, then sock, then shoe?

I feel like this is something that is very easy to get wrong. Trainer socks always seemed safe and very easy!

I buy socks the same colours as my shoes, long enough to cover my entire visible ankle when seated in trousers. A gentleman never shows bare leg flesh when wearing trousers, and this is a solid principle for ladies to adopt for maximum warmth and smartness. Plus, it then does not matter if you did not shave your legs.

I have not worn socks with a skirt since school, except when the skirt has been ankle-length and the socks knee-high so I can avoid the hated itchy tights.

DC555 · 03/04/2026 17:03

These look really comfy for under boots…but I just can’t get my head around having them on show. I think I’d look like my grandad!

I don’t really understand trainers these days either. They all seem to look like my grandad too.

I've never got on with trainer socks

I'll stick with my frilly socks, at least I've been able to get them in colours last year still from the kids section

I found a gateway sock in M&S that I’m trialing at the moment with cropped/barrell jeans and trainers, they’re called 1/4 socks - https://www.marksandspencer.com/5-pack-supersoft-ribbed-quarter-socks/p/clp61219091?color=NATURALMIX&extid=ps_ps-pla-pmax_ggl_lg_ch__-UK-_-_baussc_tier_1&cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=23698245488&cq_con=&cq_term=&cq_med=pla&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&cq_plt=gp&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23692900026&gbraid=0AAAAAD7g6bTFCE0rc9NsCy36cXI8MErSb&gclid=Cj0KCQjwyr3OBhD0ARIsALlo-OnRP0WPruA1cBZqEyUqZOvFReaEyirLWU6_TzW4sUbkt9DXjgoMv_YaAo8sEALw_wcB

I enjoyed brightly coloured Uniqlo socks with boots, so just got glimpses of them, over the winter but not quite pushed myself to wear them with trainers yet!

Oo I do actually like these.

When it gets warm, crew socks are too warm for me. I always marvel at people wearing trainers in the dead of summer let alone with full socks on as well. I agree though though that ankles on show have been decreed a no no. Which is good for cooler weather as I've seen many a cold ankle over the years.

And this is the difference between fashion and style.

If you want to rock a trainer sock, then go for it. Personally I think the visible sock over leggings is ugly AF. But I'm sure I will be considered an unfashionable old fart. And I don't care.

I found a look I like and I stick to it. And I like to think I look good. That, in my opinion, is style.

Fashion VS style is a fabulous point.

landlordhell · 03/04/2026 18:24

I wear wide leg jeans so no ankle showing. I would not dream of wearing a sock with a dress or skirt. It looks bad unless you’re about 6ft with very slim legs. I would look like wee Jimmy Cranky! But I'm 55.

OMG I thought socks with trainers was bad enough, but socks with loafers? 🤮. It hurts my millennial eyes!

I think anyone with feet over a size 4 is going to look bad recreating any of these looks. The black shorts and loafers isn’t terrible, but the woman in the long tan shorts looks like she’s running a scout camp.

I loathe socks on display, I always have done.
I remember getting told off by my Mum for rolling down my stupid knee socks.
My eldest has commented on my socks under leggings look for the gym saying it looks better with socks over the leggings. I disagree strongly. My young adults and teens feel it’s important to show off branded socks and I get it for them but I’m happy to be more mysterious.

It’s so bad isn’t it? Made me lol.

We all wore loafers with ankle socks round my way in 1979

I wear mine like this. Ankle socks with a stripe or two or the same but more sporty

probably looks ridiculous on someone of my advanced years but meh

I feel like this would also not look good on someone younger as well. I’m not sure if it’s the pumps with the socks or the turn ups with the socks, it just looks odd. It’s very grandad

Plumblossomsbloom · 03/04/2026 22:39

I get socks from The Donkey Sanctuary and wear them with cropped jeans and buttoned up slim fitting cardigans at this time of year. I love interesting socks and am glad I no longer have to hide them.

ILoveFluffyDogsSoMuch · 03/04/2026 22:50

I goto slimming world. Part of the process is to step on the scales. I make sure to wear interesting socks. I do see i variety of good socks. I always comment on the interesting ones.
