Are cardigans really a fashion mistake, or still practical for summer layering?

With summer hopefully approaching, I realise I have a fair few cardigans in my wardrobe. Ideal for when I need an extra layer that isn’t too stiff or structured. And there are plenty on sale in the shops too. So is it really a fashion mistake to wear a cardigan, and if so, what is the alternative?

I wear cardigans all year round. Even on the less warm days in Summer! Deownding on the weather tey will vary in thickness, colour and fabric but I think lightweight, thinner cardigans are the easiest way to deal with fluctuating UK temperatures.

@SubstanceStyle and Beauty. Sorry!

Oh dear, almost everything I knit or crochet is a cardigan. Some of them I follow a pattern, but I have made a few up as I went along, particularly with crochet, which lends itself well to being less strict about the fit. I have made a few monstrosities and they’re great for staying warm around the house, but most of them I’m fairly happy to venture out in😅

Headhurtsheadhurtsheadhurts · 01/04/2026 19:22

Don’t understand this post. There have been loads of them around all
winter & all over Instagram

Lararoft · 01/04/2026 19:49

Well, on Vinted & eBay certain cardigans from for example River Island, Primark, Zara etc are often advertised as cardigans that have been ‘viral’ and they seem to sell quickly, especially the RI ones, even at like £20 or so if they’re in good condition as new they’re almost £50.
The popular cardis tend to be a variety of boucle / checked / pink colours / have unusual buttons & are usually fitted & / or cropped.
I have bought some cute RI & Zara cardis in similar styles from Vinted & eBay (it’s quite challenging to find them in a size 16 as that’s a popular size) & they look good with jeans, I’ve also worn them to job interviews with wide leg trousers.

Cardigans will always be in fashion because there are so many different things you can do with them, it's just the style that changes.
I'm a huge fan and probably (definitely!) have too many, everything from ankle length to bolero style. Only style I don't think I have is a waterfall one, I'm not sure that one is ever going to back back!

I love a boxy round necked one as a jumper but I also do enjoy the quirky granny core ones that are around now.....but I'm just as likely to wear some mad patterned monstrosity that only I love!

LizzieLazzie · 01/04/2026 20:07

People saying cardigans should be buttoned up to be fashionable, if you do that you might as well wear a jumper! The beauty of cardis is that they can be worn open or buttoned depending on the temperature. I thought that flexibility was the point of them.

SurferRona · 01/04/2026 20:17

I have a few. Currently daily wearing a long grey cashmere edge to edge. Lovely, light but warm, great for warm ish spring days. Ditto some shorter full button coloured ones for cooler summer days/eves.

I would never ever wear them out in public. Even dog walking. Never.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 18:01

@IMustDoMoreExercise Why? Do you not have a sink? Better than dry clean only!

I never hand wash anything as it is too much effort.

I won't buy anything that is hand wash or dry clean only.

What happens if you do wear them outside??
A portal to a hellmouth opens?
The sky rains blood?
Night becomes day?
Fascinating and intriguing...

Abra1t · 01/04/2026 20:22

I have eight. Four cashmere. One merino. One linen. One cotton. One sezane mix of mohair and wool.

i can’t think what else you wear if it’s cool or cold and a jacket would be too uncomfortable and a jumper would be a pain to pull over everything.

I’ve worn the cropped cashmere ones to the theatre and over a dress at a smart wedding. The sezane one looks good for going out for meals and is incredibly warm.

They all go in the washing machine machine.

hugandkiss · 01/04/2026 20:25

Love a cardigan and often wear them backwards!

Indeed! I'm perplexed too ...

catlover123456789 · 01/04/2026 21:22

I wear them all the time. Pretty dress plus cardigan is pretty much my work/going out look.

twentyeightfishinthepond · 01/04/2026 21:28

I love mine and I don’t care who doesn’t.

You have made me realise I have NO idea how many cardigans I own!!!

But I need not be ashamed as I am among my tribe on this thread ... I feel safe & cosy in my gorgeous navy mohair-blend, lurex-edged Wyse boyfriend cardigan (this week's favourite 😁!!).

Givinguponmyhair · 01/04/2026 22:33

Hate them

ALL of them? I don't understand this. It's like saying you don't like coats. Or shoes.

Ok, so some people might not like coats or shoes - or cardigans - but surely they'll be in a very tiny minority, as there are so very many styles to choose from & they're all so different?!!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 22:39

@LizzieLazzie It’s not entirely the point of them. Buttoned up if v neck and chunky is normal. Most a modelled buttoned up. Only ones without buttons are open and ballet wraps are always wrapped!

Savonne · 01/04/2026 09:50

People wear cardigans probably have bunches, wear dungarees and post happy birthdays to dead people on Facebook

You have a very active imagination 🤣

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 12:37

@ZovClearly you are entitled to your view, but if you don’t care about style and presumably fashion, why are you on this thread? You aren’t really in a position to offer advice because you don’t like the topic.

What are you talking about ? She is not the first poster to give this response, so why be so snappy? And someone saying they don’t follow trends does not mean that they don’t care about style. In fact It’s often the opposite.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/04/2026 02:56

Anyone who thinks cardigans are a fashion mistake clearly doesn't follow current fashion.

Me too! Long floral dress, boots and a cardi. I did go through the "waterfall " cardi and jeans phase admittedly when I was bigger and realise it was a mistake.

Love those sleeves. I have a chunky-ish jumper from them with similar sleeves that I've worn loads all winter - slightly wide, slightly cropped, black wool-mix with a roll-neck. I may have to go for that creamy-beige one ...

Hate those sleeves 😁
