Are cardigans really a fashion mistake, or still practical for summer layering?

With summer hopefully approaching, I realise I have a fair few cardigans in my wardrobe. Ideal for when I need an extra layer that isn’t too stiff or structured. And there are plenty on sale in the shops too. So is it really a fashion mistake to wear a cardigan, and if so, what is the alternative?

What a strange question. Clearly I am very out of touch… 🤔

FurForksSake · 01/04/2026 08:11

The Hope Macaulay cardigans are awful, I’d find an alternative. They bobble, the sizing is off, they collect lint, the unspun wool is massively fragile.

They’ve paid a huge amount for the marketing and sadly the cardigans are just not fit for purpose.

Divebar2021 · 01/04/2026 08:23

I’ve got a couple of men’s oversized cardigans that I’ve picked up second hand but the last one I bought new was from Uniqlo. I think the type which is less fashionable would be the skinny fine knits with the high neck. I’m completely confident that someone could take one of those and wear it in a great outfit so don’t let that put you off wearing one. ( I have a Vivienne Westwood fine cardigan and I’m not getting rid of it anytime soon )

They are also very ugly.

Another asking why a cardigan is a 'fashion mistake' ?😆
Wear what you feel good in, what fits properly and in the colours you like. It really doesn't matter, other people won't care what you wear.
Any one who says otherwise is just projecting their own insecurities on how they look. I wear what I want and don't give a damn if anyone turned their nose up at my look.

MissingTrees · 01/04/2026 08:33

I love cardigans and no one will persuade me they are any kind of mistake.

chimein · 01/04/2026 08:39

Boxy cardigans (worn with a tshirt/longsleeve tshirt) slouchy cardigans (worn with a vest) structured cardigans (buttoned up or worn over a tshirt) similar to a jacket are all ok.

Straight down Cardigans that hit around hip/ cardigans worn over a blouse/cardigans worn with leggings, long enough to cover the bum - are not ok.

Waterfall cardigans are outlawed.

These are the cardigan rules and MUST be obeyed 🤪

ClaredeBear · 01/04/2026 08:41

I feel the same about cardigans, probably due to the number of times I was told to “put a cardi on if you’re cold” as a child. I rarely wear them but they’re very practical. Must be buttoned.

KindLemonSquid · 01/04/2026 08:51

I honestly don't care if they're fashionable or not. I love a cardigan and have loads. Many of them high quality ones from charity shops.

So handy for the office where I run hot/cold on a daily basis thanks to the joy of menopause.

dudsville · 01/04/2026 09:00

I don't live in a community where the notion of a fashion mistake is really applicable. I think that is a consideration for proper fashionistas. The range of cardigans is varied and different subsets take different approaches to the item. I currently have 5. Two quite chunky, but not quite as chunky as the weird ones listed above. One oversized and two slouchy. I found the cropped ones and the more fitted ones that I loved several years back started to look really bad on me last year. They sold really quickly on vinted though.

tiredandhyped · 01/04/2026 09:01

Where have you heard that this is a fashion mistake? I work in the fashion industry and cardigans are always in stores for this time of year.

you can also wear an unbuttoned shirt over a cami or similar top. That’s quite a nice look. Or a nice jacket in leather or another lighter fabric. Or you could wear a skirt or shorts with a heavier jumper and boots if it’s cold? It depends on what your style is, how you cope with the cold, what events you’re wearing these to.

DoingANewThing · 01/04/2026 09:05

I love a cardi! I have lots of long, fine knit cardigans (not waterfall) in different neutral shades that are perfect for when a jacket is too warm but you need an extra layer, and a few cropped fitted ones that look nice with dresses.

I’m not a fashion victim, and nobody is going to persuade me that anything ‘boxy’ or ‘chunky knit’ looks good on me.

I bought this at the beginning of the winter and have worn it so much I bought another in navy a few weeks ago. It feels like a cloud and is so easy to wear with just about everything.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/04/2026 09:10

Not a fashion mistake per se but one should not forget the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade that Earl of Cardigan was responsible for. So I suggest you burn any that you have - or alternatively call them a fleece.

(Wellingtons are perfectly acceptable, any time of year.)

Linenspots · 01/04/2026 09:16

I hope not, I've just spent two weeks crocheting a beautiful one for myself 😂

Jellybelly80 · 01/04/2026 09:18

Following weight loss my arms aren’t great skin wise and I’d love to be able to wear a cardigan instead of always buying things with a longer sleeve. How do you know which style to buy and how do you wear them pls?

If you have gtp+ put a photo of yourself in and ask it to show different styles on you. Sleeves to the elbow are the newest trend now. Lots of lacy shirt styles that would look good with jeans or over a full skirt if you define your waist

I bought 2 gorgeous pink ones from Primark last year… my SIL saw and bought a pink one from
Boden and also has a lovely green Whistles one.

Daftypants · 01/04/2026 09:22

Love cardigans !
so easy to pop on and off depending on the temperature outside / inside .
So many places are either overheated in winter and early spring or the AC is chilly at other times .
I prefer them to jumpers as then i don’t continually mess up my hair pulling them on and off over my head .
i have some cashmere from Pure , John Lewis and Landsend .
classic crew neck with nice buttons .
i also have some slouchy ones Chunky ones and some lightweight cotton ones for summer

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/04/2026 09:26

I love a cardi - my autumn/winter “uniform” tends to be alpaca or wool cardigans worn over a crew neck t-shirt, with jeans. most of mine are Cos, Arket, and &OtherStories. I’m a lecturer and can often be in hot teaching rooms so they are easy to take off. I like them to end at waist/hip length, not a fan of long or edge-to-edge/waterfall styles.

Today I’m in a chocolate brown alpaca cardi from Arket, white Uniqlo t-shirt, beige barrel leg Cos jeans, and Adidas leopard print trainers. Hopefully the fashion police don’t come for me!

Happyjoe · 01/04/2026 09:49

Since when have cardies been a fashion mistake? They're great! I have several, worn over a cami. Perfect for summer and winter. Am so glad I don't allow trends to dictate to me.

Savonne · 01/04/2026 09:50

The fact that they're called a Cardi makes me cringe

Very live laugh, love

Savonne · 01/04/2026 09:50

People wear cardigans probably have bunches, wear dungarees and post happy birthdays to dead people on Facebook

I have 3 crochet cardigans, love em in the summer and many folk have admired. Bet you'll look great!
