Are cardigans really a fashion mistake, or still practical for summer layering?

With summer hopefully approaching, I realise I have a fair few cardigans in my wardrobe. Ideal for when I need an extra layer that isn’t too stiff or structured. And there are plenty on sale in the shops too. So is it really a fashion mistake to wear a cardigan, and if so, what is the alternative?

I bought this at the beginning of the winter and have worn it so much I bought another in navy a few weeks ago. It feels like a cloud and is so easy to wear with just about everything.

Do you hand wash it?

Wow, we’ve got a live one here!

Not a fashion mistake per se but one should not forget the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade that Earl of Cardigan was responsible for. So I suggest you burn any that you have - or alternatively call them a fleece.

(Wellingtons are perfectly acceptable, any time of year.)

What about sandwiches?

I don’t even understand this comment - cardi is just a common shortening of a full word, like saying bus for autobus. How can it be “live, laugh, love”? As for saying happy birthday to dead people - wtf?

That's a weird one. As to the "bunches" remark? 🙄

It’s one of MN’s meaningless words - along with frumpy. Used by people who have no understanding of fashion or style.

Thank you. As I thought.

People wear cardigans probably have bunches, wear dungarees and post happy birthdays to dead people on Facebook

Nooo .i like Ms Rachel 🤣

Pigtailsandall · 01/04/2026 11:46

Personally I've never liked cardi(gans) and I think the really thin, waterfall-style ones do look dated. I wouldn't buy those as they are super "of a time". I do like the really thick, long ones which are almost like coats, or short woolly ones that you button up and wear as jumpers. Instead oda cardigan, I wear a light jacket or a denim shirt. Sometimes hoodie.

Ponderingpondering · 01/04/2026 11:51

Love a cardi !

suburburban · 01/04/2026 11:53

prefer cardigans as jumpers are a pain to keep pulling over your head when you are too hot

I don't think it's meaningless. It's the equivalent of dad (as in 'dad trainers').

It is however pejorative and misogynistic in a way that 'Dad' is not

I haven’t washed it yet because I always wear it over something else. The care label says machine wash on the delicate cycle.

Ha, this is me, apart from posting on fb. Braids instead of bunches, mind.

Quite. It's used very frequently on here.

I don't think so.

The 'dad-' one makes me think of a middle aged man who is still wearing the sort of clothes he wore when 20, but by now they look dated, and he has a bit of a belly and moobs.

No, it is used frequently on S&B.
I've seen it a lot.

Zov · 01/04/2026 12:18

I wear a cardigan around 50% of the time, and I couldn't give a fat shiny bollock if they're a 'fashion mistake' or not. I have never followed trends.

Me too. I hate it almost as much as I hate “frumpy”. Always used to put other women down.

AlbieJiggered · 01/04/2026 12:20

There should be a 'dadsy' adjective.
There's a certain mumsy and 'dadsy' look.

While I agree that it's not a pleasant adjective, it does conjure a certain impression.

Men can look frumpy too.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 12:37

@ZovClearly you are entitled to your view, but if you don’t care about style and presumably fashion, why are you on this thread? You aren’t really in a position to offer advice because you don’t like the topic.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 12:41

Just for info: cropped cardigans are everywhere! Preferably with big buttons and cashmere if you can afford it. As they are short, they are a long way from a “dad” cardigan. They go very well with wide jeans. Another trend is very very chunky knits. Some of these are expensive and quite boho. A girl on Pottery Throwdown wore one this series. What with KBJ and his work/chore jackets - who would have thought clay and fashion?

leporello · 01/04/2026 12:45

Cardigan fancier here, this is my current number one:

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 12:48

@leporello Yes - short! Better a version with buttons though! Too flappy otherwise!
