Would you buy a dress that has a matching children’s version?

I have seen a dress I really like, but I’m put off by the fact it has a matching version for a child. For context I’m 54 and have no children. I feel this won’t go well for me.

I can see myself wearing this dress on holiday, on a Greek Island, wafting serenely around, possibly barefoot, with not a care in the world.

But then I had a thought. What if I bump into a family where a child is wearing the matching version? Would that be really weird?

Anyone who buys their child a white sezane dress has more money than sense. I dont think it will be a popular choice for kids. You should be fine.

GenieGenealogy · 17/03/2026 08:00

It's a lovely dress and a niche enough brand that finding someone else of whatever age wearing the saame thing is unlikely.

Schoolchoicesucks · 17/03/2026 08:15

I thought you were going to be asking about buying yourself and your DC matching dresses. Which would have been a big fat no from me. But I don't think this would be any "worse" than bumping into another adult wearing the same dress.

ElizabethFryIsSpinning · 17/03/2026 08:16

Boden do the matching dress thing as well, I couldn't buy it. The thought of going to a pre wedding cocktails in the same outfit as one of the child attendees put me right off.

TheDayBeforeYouCame · 17/03/2026 08:40

The children’s dress is in the same fabric but the style is different. That could happen with lots of dresses, so it wouldn’t put me off. Lovely dress.

PhaedraWas · 17/03/2026 08:57

Palava do matching dresses. I've got around a dozen of their dresses. It doesn't bother me in the slightest, not even thought about it.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 17/03/2026 09:06

Its a nice dress for a holiday and I doubt anyone would care if they saw a child wearing one too.

Rama Dress Sezane

I don't know if the dress, lovely as it is, is distinctive enough to worry too much? the cut of the kids one is different. I reckon i'd risk it but i do see the potential for spoiling romantic daydreams. thanks for the intro to sezane, gorgeous stuff!

Savonne · 17/03/2026 09:29

I don't like

CortieTat · 17/03/2026 09:32

I wouldn’t worry too much about this. The majority of children I know consider Sézane children’s line cringe (I have Gen Alpha at home). Many of these clothes are targeted at stylish grandmothers looking for gifts for their grandchildren.

mumofb2 · 17/03/2026 09:39

I agree very niche brand. I would doubt it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/03/2026 10:33

Would the child version fit a dog?

That might not be so silly.

(You may have to find a dog first...)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/03/2026 11:06

I reckon the chances of anyone buying a young child a dress which is white, and that price, and being on holiday in the same place as you at the same time is never to nothing. And they are not exactly the same anyway. You’ll be reet, as we say in S Yorks.

mrschocolatte · 17/03/2026 12:13

Thank you everyone for your comments. They’ve helped me make up my mind and I have ordered the dress. My Grecian summer fantasy is alive and kicking in my head!

It’s a lovely dress and looks perfect for a Greek island. I wouldn’t worry about the kids version.

ArcticBells · 17/03/2026 13:50

There used to be a company called Clothkits that specialised in mother/child matching outfits 😂

It’s beautiful, so why not? Also, there’s no mention of it in the children’s section anyway.

AutumnOcean · 17/03/2026 15:50

It's a beautiful dress!

OhBobbins · 17/03/2026 19:15

Gorgeous dress, pleased to see you've ordered it. As others have said it's a very unlikely scenario that a child would turn up in the (pricey and very impractical for a child) dress.

Years ago when I was much smaller I used to fit into age 15-16 clothes which were cheaper and sometimes really nice. Annoyingly a lot of brands cottoned on to this and now most stop at about age 13. I used to always think that one day I'd pass a 7 year old in the same outfit, but fortunately it never happened and that was high street / supermarket clothing so much more affordable than Sezane!

Lauz841 · 17/03/2026 19:29

Are you sure you can even buy the kids one? I cant find it, unless im being stupid. I love it, but im the weirdo who would buy my daughter the matching one!

DM might have photographic evidence of this!

SurferRona · 17/03/2026 20:23

I think you’re safe OP! The dresses are same fabric and vibe only, they aren’t matching as such. The straps are sitting a bit off with me though, I think maybe they aren’t narrow nor wide enough. Slightly nightie vibe, weirdly? I am looking to swap up my usual broderie anglais dress this year, I’m now keep an eye on Sezanne- thank you!

FruAashild · 18/03/2026 07:54

If, on the tiny chance you meet a child in the child's dress you just say 'nice dress' with a big smile and go on with your day. But that is very unlikely. Even when you buy from a shop as ubiquitous as NEXT you rarely bump into someone wearing the same outfit.

SerenitySeeker4 · 18/03/2026 07:56

I don't think anyone would buy their child that dress. You're good to go.

TittyGajillions · 18/03/2026 08:57

Not that particular dress no.
