What coat are you wearing this weather?

This weather! I've no idea what coat to wear. It's too mild for serious winter coats like the padded Scandi type ones, and fake fur. But when I went out earlier today I put on a cotton trenchcoat with a cotton jumper, and I needed gloves and a hat and was still a bit chilly (I suspect it looked a bit odd).
And if I wear a wool jumper, I'm too warm.
What is everyone wearing?

A scruffy waterproof with pockets full of poo bags !

Grin But seriously, what sort of weight? Light-ish, rather than full-on padded winter type? (I have a nice pink Ilse Jacobsen raincoat, but think it's a little too light for just now).

I have a raincoat with a lightweight wool lining that I wear from end September to late spring, and sometimes in the summer if it's very wet. It was an extravagant buy, but the cost per wear is dropping very quickly. Google Pret Pour Partir if you want to see similar.

I bought mine in Autumn 24, but they do similar most winters although you may have to look in the sale section now as the summer stuff is thinner.

Still wearing winter coat here. Blowing a gale with horizontal rain and pretty chilly.

SoScarletItWas · 12/03/2026 15:39

The wrong one!
If it’s right in the morning on the way to work, it’s too warm for the afternoon leaving work.

A quilted (not padded puffer) jacket is most suitable but no good when I want to be a bit more stylish.

My wool jackets and coats are too hot.

My trench coat/macs are too cold.

My raincoat only comes out when it’s actually pee-ing down.

These few weeks are always a nightmare!

ClaredeBear · 12/03/2026 15:41

i layer under a very scruffy lined raincoat from Sea Salt.

Theraininspainishere · 12/03/2026 15:43

more than bum-length wax jacket from fatface. Keeps the wind off. Loads of room to layer but very scruffy!

I'm sorry. How miserable!

Exactly! That's me exactly.

Today I wore a faux leather jacket. It was abit chilly though so I put on a thermal vest under my outfit. That's usually how I manage TBH. Just layer differently underneath.

minnowonthesay · 12/03/2026 20:42

Lots of trench coats and I carry a hood in my bag 😂

What coat are you wearing this weather?
mimiasovitch · 12/03/2026 21:20

Walking the dog yesterday I had on a vest top, with a warmer coat on top. Today on the other hand was a jumper, plus hat, scarf and warmest waterproof coat. It’s been bloody horrible out there today .

VenusClapTrap · 12/03/2026 22:04

Long leather trench if I need to be smart, or a short wool jacket that I think is called a ‘country jacket.’ The jacket is warm and wind proof, but not bulky, so perfect for between seasons.

Doggymummar · 12/03/2026 22:06

What weather do you have? Yesterday I just had a hoodie, today 8 didn't go out as it's dangerous high winds. Snow forecast for the weekend

Molluscsong · 12/03/2026 22:43

I think it depends where you live. I'm northish. Think Chester/Liverpool but on the Welsh side.
I've barely worn a coat to work all winter (car).
Weekend walks beach/ woods: hoodie.
Pub: leather jacket and occasionally gloves.
Been v mild overall. I've run in shorts all winter.

ConstanzeMozart · 13/03/2026 07:59

London. Veers between sunny and mild, and, yesterday, feeling like about 4 degrees, grey and windy.

Too mild? I envy you! It's absolutely bitter where I am, everyone is still in scarves, gloves and big winter coats!

CortieTat · 13/03/2026 08:32

I’m still wearing a wool coat or a wool jacket. Harris Tweed so on the thinner side, definitely too thin for a typical Scandinavian winter.

Short wool jacket sounds good.

I wore a trench yesterday and then got a wet head when it rained. Was so windy my umbrella broke.

have ordered this from joules. But not sure it’ll be warm enough yet.

Fine til it rains. But I’m using my short wool jacket today as it’s windy but dry. Only a thin top underneath needed.

Mine is waterproof. I wouldn’t wear it in a torrential downpour, but I regularly wear it when it’s showering/drizzle. It’s quality, dense old-school wool. Designed for outdoor activities/work (I’m a gardener) so practical rather than fashion, but I often get complimented on it so I think it’s reasonably stylish!

Mistyglade · 13/03/2026 12:30

Trench.
