Does you think this dress looks ok fit-wise?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered a dress from a sample sale and it can’t be returned, only exchanged for another size or another item but I think it already might be past the date. I am usually a size 8 and with a 25ish inch waist but noticed the dimensions for their 8 came up a bit smaller than usual, think 24ish inches or so, the chest was smaller too. I sized up to a 10 but it’s a bit loose on the collar and waist but I think I can get away with it? The only issue is it’s a little snug under the arms, as in when I lift the arms the chest moves up a bit. I wonder if a tailor might be able to let the arms out a little. Could I get away with it as is or does it look ill fitting eg tight in some places and loose in others?

It looks nice on you when your arms are down, apart from looking big across the shoulders. Have you tried it with a different bra to see how that changes it on your torso and shoulders?

MissyB1 · 10/03/2026 11:09

Tbh it actually looks a little loose on you, particularly on the neckline. I often have the same issue as a size 8.

Thanks, I don’t think I’m actually wearing one in this pic as I took it off to see if I’d have more room! I’ll have a look

Yeah, I don’t think I could size down to the S (8) as it would be way too tight under the arms. You can tell it’s snug under the arm hole whenever I lift them up

I like it op. Lovely dress.

I think the waist is slightly too low - a slightly more padded bra might do the trick to lift it up a little

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/03/2026 11:32

It's not terrible and it's a lovely dress but the fit on the shoulders isn't good.
The waist looks a bit too loose.

What are the seam allowances like?

It's easier to take in than let out.

PotofPens1 · 10/03/2026 11:33

The shoulders look too wide - which I think is contributing to the problems when you move your arms - the shoulder seam should be closer to your neck.

I can't tell from the photos, but is the waist seam at the right height for you?

ExOptimist · 10/03/2026 11:35

The shoulders are definitely too wide so the neckline doesn't lie nicely.

ReadingCrimeFiction · 10/03/2026 11:43

Its a nice dress and you have a nice figure but no, its not flattering because it doesn't fit properly. Needs to be a bit more cinched at the waist and the shoulders are too wide. Im not sure how this can be fixed without significant tailoring.

Peppermintcreamz · 10/03/2026 11:43

Some better photos of it in action, it’s hard to see without a video which I can’t include on here. But the first pic is what happens when I lift my arms.

Is the neck to waist length a bit long? It looks like the waist and bust are sitting in about the right place, but the shoulders are about half an inch too high? It’s a fairly easy fix for sleeveless dresses, but I think to fix on this would mean having the sleeves removed, the length removed at the shoulder and the sleeves reinserted slightly lower. I’d imagine it’s fairly expensive to get it altered and obviously can’t be returned if it doesn’t work. If you’re keen, still, talk to a tailor/ dressmaker to get their opinion

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 10/03/2026 11:53

I would try a different (or indeed any) bra and see if the S fits then, I would be a size bigger with no bra on.

Its a beautiful dress.

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/03/2026 11:53

Shoulder circles - too big. The shoulders need to fit your shoulders.
Underarm circle - fit isn't quite right.
Waist (applies to the whole waist) - looks just a bit too big.

I also thing the neckline isn't the best for you, but as you're not busty it doesn't look bad.
It's a lovely dress but needs tweaking.

Accidentally removed the image.

newN4me · 10/03/2026 11:53

to add - I have “fixed” similar myself by sewing a diagonal line from the join of the shoulder and sleeve downwards slightly towards the neckline, but your dress looks like something you’d want to be adjusted properly

The princess seams (vertical seams on the bodice) should be aligned with your bust points and they don't seem to fully (it's a bit difficult to see though). The front part across your chest does appear too wide.
If that's the case, the bodice is too big which is also paradoxically making the arms seem tight and the whole thing rides up when you lift your arms.

Ah, so that's why the underarms don't quite look right. Now you've pointed it out, I can see that the princess seams don't flatter OP's lovely figure.
Thanks.

Honestly? It’s too big and it’s not very flattering!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/03/2026 15:46

I personally don’t like it and as pp said it’s too big.

OvernightBloats · 10/03/2026 15:49

That dress is doing you no favours at all. Too big and bulky. The shoulders are a big giveaway that the dress isn't sized properly for your frame.

Nice colour and material though.

BlonderThanYou · 10/03/2026 15:50

I like it

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/03/2026 16:03

@Peppermintcreamz , look inside the dress and check the seam allowances. If they are generous, get the smaller size.

EasternStandard · 10/03/2026 16:50

It’s not a great fit, it looks a bit bulky.
