Does you think this dress looks ok fit-wise?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered a dress from a sample sale and it can’t be returned, only exchanged for another size or another item but I think it already might be past the date. I am usually a size 8 and with a 25ish inch waist but noticed the dimensions for their 8 came up a bit smaller than usual, think 24ish inches or so, the chest was smaller too. I sized up to a 10 but it’s a bit loose on the collar and waist but I think I can get away with it? The only issue is it’s a little snug under the arms, as in when I lift the arms the chest moves up a bit. I wonder if a tailor might be able to let the arms out a little. Could I get away with it as is or does it look ill fitting eg tight in some places and loose in others?

It's not flattering, too bulky, you could do heaps better than that with your figure

mcmuffin22 · 10/03/2026 21:02

Agree with previous posters. Not a fan of these types of dresses that make the wearer look like they've been upholstered. I would try to sell it on.

Oh @mcmuffin22 .

It's beautiful and it's almost perfect on you. A seamstress could make it work on you

ForPinkDuck · 10/03/2026 21:51

Its too big.

ForPinkDuck · 10/03/2026 21:52

Ps i wish i had your problems!

Some better photos of it in action, it’s hard to see without a video which I can’t include on here. But the first pic is what happens when I lift my arms.

I think it looks fine there. You're not going to go around lifting your arms up.

GoldDuster · 10/03/2026 22:25

I think if you love it in principal and it's too late to send it back, get it down to a decent seamstress or tailor who can alter it to fit better. It's too wide at the shoulder, and the bodice could do with a tweak.

I think this too.

BoudiccaRuled · 10/03/2026 22:42

It's a bit big on the shoulders but would still work for a very smart event. The type of event it's suitable for you wouldn't be lifting your arms up anyway, unless you are a member of a gospel church congregation..?
It looks quite warm but you are lovely and slim so that might not be a bad thing.

Robogob · 11/03/2026 01:50

I think it looks lovely.

canklesmctacotits · 11/03/2026 02:16

I’m with PPs but without seamstress qualifications! I just can tell something’s not right as it looks simultaneously too big and too small. It’s like it needs to be narrowed and the waist dropped/bodice section (including armholes) lengthened. It’s a great dress, but it’s ill-fitting.

babyt2020 · 11/03/2026 04:05

I think it looks really lovely

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 11/03/2026 04:43

I’d try and swap it for something else.

Am I the only one in awe of the expertise and eye for detail on this thread ?

Tonissister · 11/03/2026 14:00

I think it is too big. I am constantly making this mistake with fitted clothes and thinking I need to size up. Can you try the size 8? It may not be much tighter under the arms. the key is for the shoulders, bust and waistline to fit well and all of these seem a bit big on you.

REDB99 · 11/03/2026 14:04

I think it looks lovely!

Schoolstressed · 11/03/2026 14:09

I think it’s lovely and will look even better with the shoulders and perhaps waist altered.

Londonmummy66 · 11/03/2026 14:28

I think it would be difficult to tweak the dress enough to fit perfectly. If the only problem was the neckline it might have been possible to lift it at the shoulders but that will exacerbate the underarm problem. FItted dresses in heavy fabrics could usually do with an underarm gusset but no one bothers with them these days.

Peppermintcreamz · 11/03/2026 14:32

Thanks everyone, I think I will bring it to a seamstress for a look!

Also just adding that I am not usually quite so fussy, only it was quite pricey so I definitely think if it’s worth splurging on it’s worth seeing if a seamstress can work any magic on it. I promise I’m not as particular about all of my other clothes! 😆

I don’t think you are being fussy, the dress doesn’t quite fit.
My DM used to get lots of samples that were nearly right and end up not wearing them so it’s worth getting it altered, sending it back or selling it.

Skybluepinky · 11/03/2026 16:11

The bust part is at the wrong height for your body, unless you can get it altered give it a miss.
