Can I dye my greys pink?

I have dark brown hair that's greying in areas - no substantial chunks, but a peppering of greys throughout. I'm going to grey naturally and not dye them brown, but I wondered whether there was a way to have fun with them - is there a way that I can dye my hair so that the grey bits will go, say, pink or red but the rest will stay brown? Would one of those temporary Schwarzkopf dyes do it? For context I'm about to leave teaching after 20 years of good behaviour and I think I'm having a mid-life rebellion...! (Also it needs to be temporary as at heart I'm deeply conventional and it probably won't suit me...)

You can get pink shampoos/conditioners that deposit colour.

Catsandcwtches · 07/03/2026 08:30

This is my plan OP, I follow people who do it on Insta and looks really nice. I’m planning to grow out my grey first more though so that there is a lighter base for the dye.

JudgementalCat · 07/03/2026 08:34

I wanted to do this but I was told the dye doesn't stick to grey hair as easily as it does other colours. I was also told 'fun' colours only last about a month.
They weren't the answers I wanted, so I'm interested if a hairdresser tells you this can be done!

FusionChefGeoff · 07/03/2026 08:36

I have no idea but I like it! I reckon that the grey hair will be really porous compared to the brown so anything you put on should take well on the greys and pretty much leave the brown untouched.

i reckon your instinct is good - a wash out box die should work. If you go for something pretty pale and pink rather than red to start with that probably won’t really affect the brown then you could go more ‘intense’ with the next box until you find the limit with what starts to affect the brown.

Oh just seen the post above mine looks like I’m talking bollocks 🤣

allhailtheeyeballsinthesky · 07/03/2026 08:43

I used to do it via my hairdresser when I only had a few greys in dark brown hair, she got pink or purple dye in for me and it lasted about 6 weeks, I don't do it now as I liked the subtle flash of colour, and that boat has sailed

Schoolparentbother · 07/03/2026 08:54

I was hoping to turn my greys into blond highlights, but the dye doesn’t take well to them. Ugh.

Ooh - do you know what sort of dye they use? Do they just paint it on the grey bits or do the whole head? I'll have a look but I'm not very good with Instagram!

I did ask my hairdresser but he didn't know how I'd do it without spending a fortune on having someone just go through and paint my greys - but I'm not giving up yet!

You can do it with directions or crazy colour dye, it won't really dye the brown

HeadyLamarr · 07/03/2026 09:04

In my experience it doesn't last long. You dye all your hair. The light colour doesn't show up on the brown, just the grey but as everyone has said, it doesn't take very strongly so fade over a month or two.

It's a bit of fun, though. I found the semi permanent colours lasted about as long as the so called permanent ones.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/03/2026 09:06

You can but I get my hairdresser to do it. I think its some kind of rinse. Thats not very helpful. I hate my greys so they get dyed pink.
Ignore the daft skeleton hands. My hairdresser put them in to take pictures for her catalogue. The pink covers the grey halo round my face too.
Im 64 and I think its better than the grey.

Can I dye my greys pink?
Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 07/03/2026 09:08

Yes. I use the live colours that are semi permanent. My grey has been dyed all colours of the rainbow. The colour lasts approximately two to four weeks. Depends on how often you wash your hair!! I just leave it for far longer than the packet states to get it to take. Always get compliments. Green was the most shocking yet I loved it. (I’m late 50s fyi).

CarCarTruckJeep · 07/03/2026 09:29

I've always wanted to do this! I'm only early 30s but already have a full head of grey highlights against my dark brown. I don't mind it at all but I've never really dyed my hair and always thought it would be great to have some fun with the lighter colour. I was looking at semi permanent box dyes, some PP mentioned Directions and Live, will definitely give it a go sometime and report back!

Branleuse · 07/03/2026 09:32

You could get crazy color or directionsand apply it carefully with a brush. Leave for 20 mins or so and wash out.
Not expensive or difficult to do, so why not x

DelphiniumBlue · 07/03/2026 11:59

Not sure about the greys, but in my youth I used to lighten a few strands with Sun-in and then use crazy colour ( magenta or aubergine) all over on my dark brown hair, it worked very well to give pink or purple streaks.
You’ve got nothing to lose by trying it out, it washes out fairly quickly.

BatsInHibernation · 07/03/2026 14:48

Grey hair doesn't take colour deposit that well. It will take a bit but need to be redone often and will be quite translucent - so pastel works ok.

WashableVelvet · 07/03/2026 14:51

Henna takes nicely on grey hair for a flash of orange, while leaving the dark browns looking natural (maybe a bit chestnut)

Nannyfannybanny · 07/03/2026 14:58

Getting by somehow, omg your hair is absolutely gorgeous!! I have used Bleach London pink,it's light,it's a coloured shampoo, not a dye. I was blond so the front of my hair went white.. hairdresser confirmed it's difficult to dye.white or grey..so a friend who often has her hair pink it's blue at the moment, naturally white, has to have it bleached. On occasion I've used the XXL stuff bright pink, just did the end and fringe tips.

@LoyalGreenHam you could have a look at this video (don’t think you need an Insta account to watch) https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVOi-vtDZX2/?igsh=dnNiN29nanVsOTc1

I must be lucky as my grey hair takes colour really well, maybe it depends on the texture of the hair

MightyGoldBear · 07/03/2026 15:33

I use crazy colour really easy and simple. I find purple lasts the longest on my hair. I have dark ashy brown underneath and it doesn't change that but my greys and blonde it takes really well.

Nannyfannybanny · 10/03/2026 07:54

It's the "fashion" colours that are difficult to dye on natural grey or white hair.... according to my hairdressers over many years.

arcticrollypolly · 10/03/2026 10:46

I know someone with blue on white hair - her hairdresser bleaches the white to get the blue to take?

GoGoSuperBug · 10/03/2026 10:50

I would buy a pot of direction which is a direct, temporary dye. Plop it over the whole head, it. Doesn’t contain any lightener so won’t affect the brown hair but should colour the greys pink.
