Flat shoes for wide leg jeans (not trainers)

I’ve recently took the leap over to wide leg jeans from my once beloved skinny jeans. Normally I wear them with trainers (new balance or adidas samba).

I am going to an event which is casual so I am wearing wide leg jeans and a waistcoat style vest. Trainers are too casual.

What shoes would look best please? I tried on Mary Jane style shoes, ballet pumps, pointed ballet pumps and chunky loafers and all of them looked ridiculous. But when I see others wearing this it looks great!

The jeans are a mid-dark blue and the shoes were all black - is it maybe the contrast of colour I didn’t like? Perhaps they’d look better with black jeans

I have two different pairs of Vivaia flats that I wear with my wide leg jeans.

Can anyone link to the leopard print Mary Jane’s as I’ve scoured the links on this thread and i must have missed them! Thank you…loads of good suggestion here as I am also struggling with wide leg jeans and which shoes to wear!

Same!!

M&S have some lovely mary janes that might be more in your budget. I wear mostly trainers but have kitten heeled pointy toe ankle boots in leopard print from Office, Birkenstock sage green clogs and burgundy loafers from Ravel. All look good. I do have a pair of flat pointed mary jane style sling backs with double straps in black but only wear them with mid blue jeans as they dont go well with other shades.

And now a pair of those ballerina flats have found their way into my basket!

My sincere apologies to your credit card 😁

I wear ballet pumps with mine

I usually wear my Superga canvas shoes. I have a lovely rose gold pair from Vinted.

Ballet flat or loafers but in a colour or tan, not black - a block heel shoe would also look good

BrownTwigStanding · 28/02/2026 03:19

M&S do shoes at a better price, and trainers too.

Do you wear socks with the Mary Janes or trainers? I’m 45 and feel weird showing socks but it’s too cold for bare feet most days at the mo!

I absolutely love a red shoe with darker denim colours. I have a pair of M&S wide leg denim look trousers with the stripes down the side, wear them with a combination of trainers or my ballet style red flats (with a strap across) from Next. That ‘pop’ of red looks lovely imo.

Great advice thank you. I think it was the colour of shoe that didn’t suit rather than the style now.

I ordered a pair of leopard print Mary Jane style shoes and will see how they look. I did also try on a black pointed flat pair of shoes but will try them in a different colour and see what I think.

Where would you recommend shopping for a smarter trainer please?

My leopard print mary janes look amazing with wide leg jeans. I got them for £13 in a sale ages ago.

I've been eyeing these up (also leopard print) - are they comfortable?

@CharlotteStreetW1 are these good for plantar sufferers? Any arch?

These are them.

The shoes you have mentioned should work with wide leg jeans so I think it’s probably the colour combination you don’t like. Sorry to throw out another Jean option but have you tried a barrel leg? Stop just above the shoe so you may prefer that look,

Where do Clarks get off ending at size 7? Utterly ridiculous.

Really 😮thats outrageous!!! I hadnt noticed. I shop there a lot because I need a 5.5 which is difficult to find elsewhere.
