Funeral outfit for 10 year old

GotMarriedInCornwall · 07/02/2026 21:13

I am really struggling to find a dress for my 10 year old for her Nan’s funeral.
We’re in the SW and have limited physical shops.
Looking online, there seems to be very few black dresses (at least in the places I can think of to look).
She’s tall and stocky so needs age 13 and I’m struggling to find anything except for cheap and nasty looking dresses on Amazon.
Any suggestions?

Try navy rather than black?

PauliesWalnuts · 07/02/2026 21:19

In my family it’s long been a thing for kids to go to funerals - the children in mine all go in school uniform. Nobody bats an eyelid - they usually say they look really smart.

Hamsterdamn · 07/02/2026 21:20

I am sorry for your loss.

Would a black skirt from the school uniform section, with a white school blouse or shirt, and a black cardigan work?

Thats what my pre-teen wore, from M&S so it looked decent quality. It wasn’t her actual school uniform, but seemed smart and age appropriate.

TartanMammy · 07/02/2026 21:20

What about looking at school uniform ranges for something black?

Boys are much easier, mine wore suit and tie from next to their grandma's funeral.

Silverbirchleaf · 07/02/2026 21:21

Has she got a grey school uniform skirt? Wear that with a black jumper? As long as she’s in smart and dark clothing, no one will mind.

Everwood · 07/02/2026 21:28

Would she wear something like this

HelenaWilson · 07/02/2026 21:31

Agree it doesn't have to be black. Can you get a jumper or cardigan in navy with some white on it, so it doesn't look too much like school uniform?

Lavender is also traditionally an acceptable colour for mourning, if you can find something in that colour to go with grey or navy.

My Gd age 10 just been to her GGMs funeral….she wore black flares with a long sleeve black ribbed t shirt….both from NEXT …she already had them both ( just doesn’t normally wear them together) ….I wouldn’t buy something new

Vinted is your friend here, I got my DD 3 dresses for less than £15 as options for a funeral, one has, unfortunately been worn twice now

Kirschcherries · 07/02/2026 21:40

nobody worries about black these days. School uniform or dark colours e.g. navy, grey are fine.

TokyoSushi · 07/02/2026 21:41

I got DD a lovely Mint Velvet kids dark purple dress from Vinted and put that with black tights, a black cardigan and black ballet pumps, she looked lovely and the whole outfit cost about £15

user2848502016 · 07/02/2026 22:12

Black trousers might be a better option, and she might wear them again, just with a plain top.
Nobody expects children to be in all black for a funeral

DappledThings · 07/02/2026 22:13

Anything reasonably smart in any darkish colour will be fine. Doesn't need to be black or navy. Or even plain. Or a dress. My cousin wore a red dress to our grandmother's funeral because it was her nicest one and she wanted to wear it for granny. She was only 2 years younger than your DD, nobody thought anything bad of it.

stichguru · 07/02/2026 22:14

I am sorry for your loss.
I agree with others - school skirt or trousers, shirt - black or white whichever you prefer and then black cardigan.

minipie · 07/02/2026 22:14

DD is 13, needed a smart black outfit recently and New Look and H&M had some good options. It was easier to find separates than a dress. New Look had a black maxi skirt and various stretchy trousers, paired with a smartish black top from one or the other.

TheCurious0range · 07/02/2026 22:16

This is h and m and comes in XXS XS and so on

There are quite a few nice options on Next. Filter colour / size / style / occasion and it will bring up every formal black dress in an aged 13. Order it now and you can pick it up from your nearest store tomorrow or worst case Monday.

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/02/2026 22:56

My DC also wore school uniform to funerals

Rocknrollstar · 07/02/2026 22:58

GD wore a white shirt and black trousers. Nobody cares what the children wear. It’s not a party with photographs.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/02/2026 23:03

My DDs (nearly 10 and 3 at the time) wore this dress to a funeral. Perhaps something like this?
