Looks like Joanie has gone under

Apologies if there is already a thread, I couldn't see one on S&B.

Looks like Joanie is folding. Statement on their IG account and their website states that they cannot accept any orders.

That you, Joanie?

Of course not, but I can imagine what boring crap the poster I was replying to wears.

Loved - and own - a lot of their clothes. However, too many influencers and too many ‘celeb’ collabs that I think didn’t help in the brand as they’d hoped. It might be just me but I think Dawn ‘white bread fixed my endometriosis’ Porter and ‘I’m a character midlife dopamine dresser’ influencer devalued a brilliant brand.

I had no clue who Dawn Porter was but loved that collection!
I do think the collabs made it more expensive for them to run the business and maybe didn't translate into the salesas much a they would have hoped.

Have a look on Vinted. You can select brand and search. Hopefully you’ll find an ongoing supply

The quality of the clothes they provided required higher prices, and they did shot up over the past few years- and with the COL, weaker economy etc, people are not as willing to spend.
I know many companies struggled because of unpredictable US market tariffs, customers over there being upset to pay extra for customs and with long waiting times, returning orders, companies having to issue refunds and losing a a shed loads of money as a result, having to stop traiding with US temporarily. This and the preexisting Brexit problem means it's just not achievble for many independent companies to continue trading.
I love Joanie, but my salary has not gone up by 50%, nd many of their clothing have (I got thefirst dress from themfor £35 a bit over 3 years ago, now the same items were about £80 and I could not buy anything unless it was on sale).

I absolutely agree with this. I really liked alot of their clothes but as you say my salary hasnt risen to match prices so its relying on sale stock.
Although the clothes I have and wear for work I get lots of compliments on
My favourite item is one of the cardigans. So thick and cosy with a great print.
Im sad they've closed

I’m also not surprised , they really only have a following on here, where at times I wondered if there was paid posts.

the clothes are very niche, the trying to be quirky and actually very frumpy.

runningpram · 24/01/2026 07:58

What even is this?? I have never seen this brand. Is it Australian?

Floisme · 24/01/2026 07:59

I don’t particularly like Lucy & Yak or Disturbia or The Fold or Esska shoes. I’d still be sorry if any of them closed down, because I don’t want to end up with a high street that’s owned by Hennes and Mauritz and Uniqlo.

Out of curiosity, how do you measure following?
I cisit the Mumsnet S&B board one permonth at most and yet heard of them loads from different places. Know many people whose big chunk of wardrobe was from Joanie (and who are now equally sad that it's gone).

Same here, I have always got a complimenton stuff I wore from Joanie, the planet dress is one of my favourites.I have a few of the Dawn O Porter dresses and they are all fabulous, and I love the quirky prints.

I also wonder if they havent branched out too quickly- when I first came across them, they was having a relatively small bunch of dresses/styles in different prints, some of which were permanent. Not a long while later, they had dozens of styles, limited prints, many limited collabs, branched out into jumpers, shoes, jumpsuits, pyjamas, accessories, etc, so I can imagine their production costs and having to fork out on stock, warehouses etc for so many items.
Same thing is happening to SNAG, started with tights but they now have so many mroe things like bathrobes, dresses, etc, which are well outside my range, and they too seem to be struggling with shifting them, sales are a lot more frequent on their website. I hope they at least will last.

CortieTat · 24/01/2026 08:38

I’ve never heard of them and I’m quite interested in fashion. The website looks great, I always appreciate when flat measurements of products are provided because I buy 99% of my clothes online. I was looking for an intarsia, jacquard or fair isle cardigan last year, so it looks like I was their target but I wasn’t aware of their existence. Then the cardigans I have just looked at were 50% plastic.
I bought my cardi from Sheep Inc in the end.

weaselpatrol · 24/01/2026 08:57

I feel like Joanie had their moment maybe 10 years ago but struggled to keep up with changing styles. I used to buy from them a lot but I did find some of their styles becoming a bit too twee and frumpy for my tastes. Feel the same about Sugarhill tbh. They used to be a lot more interesting when they were Sugarhill Boutique. Now it’s just the same jumpers and dresses but with different star and stripe prints for the last five years.

Very true. Run the mill, same same but different.

PhaedraWas · 24/01/2026 10:02

I am kicking myself for not having bought any of the Laura Ashley or Celia Birtwell collaboration or the beautiful green jacquard balloon sleeve dress.

I agree that it's sad they have gone.

And what's with the weird insistence on here that any poster suggesting any non mainstream brand is a paid poster? If anything I wonder about the obsession with Sezanne - which to my eyes is bland, boring and definitely overpriced for what it offers.

Why would you think that? Since this very thread mentions jobs lost in Yorkshire it seems unlikely.

Absolutely. I love “style tribes,” but it does feel like everything is getting quite homogenous.

People saying it’s a high street shop when I’ve bever seen it in the UK!

MrsLizzieDarcy · 24/01/2026 14:15

I placed an order before Christmas for a lovely velvet dress - think it was around £120. It was around 2 sizes too small, poorly cut and in no way shape or form worth the money so I sent it straight back. The velvet was already fraying in places so I'm not sure that it hadn't already been worn. Put me off ordering anything else.

henlake7 · 23/01/2026 23:56

Each to their own, Boden for me is boring old lady clothes (like a really expensive version of Bon Marche!).
I find all my Joanie bits really flattering on and very well made so hopefully will last me years. Also the company had some serious sustainable and ethical credentionals which you don't see that much these days.
I loved their hint of vintage vibe. 🙁

This, I’ve several things from Joanie which I love. I can’t wear wool so their jumpers and cardigans are perfect, soft, warm and don’t bobble. I’ve a couple of blouses, a dress, and a jumpsuit. I make a lot of my own clothes as I don’t like or suit shapeless beige oversized stuff I seem to see in many other outlets. Each to their own, the love of ‘scandi’ clothing on here baffles me but others clearly enjoy wearing it. I’ll miss Joanie ☹️

Sadly I think they were abit too pricey towards the end. I thought the Christina Hendricks Collab was all very expensive.
I have a ton of their stuff, blouses, skirts, trousers, t shirts, jackets, loads of knitwear and dresses. But I will say the vast majority was either sale purchases or Vinted, I've probably only bought a couple of bits at full price.
It's just sad for all us 'quirky/look at me' girls🙄. I dont mind that the high st caters mainly for the athleisure greige army......but some of us just really want a sweater vest with a stegasaurus on it!😅

PP were using ‘high street’ to describe the price point rather than bricks-and-mortar shops. AFAIK it was an online retailer only.

I'm a big fan. My cat is called Joanie too.

CatsCatsCatsCatsCatsCat · 11/02/2026 12:13

Noooooo! What will happen to their current stock???

Lottapianos · 12/02/2026 13:27

Christina Hendricks recently collaborated with Joanie on a collection of dresses. She put a video on IG the other day saying that she found out the same time as the rest of us that the company was going under. She has tried to get a proper explanation but has heard nothing so far. She seemed pretty frustrated, understandably
