Looks like Joanie has gone under

Apologies if there is already a thread, I couldn't see one on S&B.

Looks like Joanie is folding. Statement on their IG account and their website states that they cannot accept any orders.

‘Designer look at high street prices’

Hence why they closed 😟

trustedadult · 22/01/2026 03:05

I'm not surprised. Really weird clothes

Floisme · 22/01/2026 07:24

I don’t have to wear it frequently so be sorry it’s gone. Retailing is uniform enough as it is and this is hardly going to encourage a business to be a bit different.

Scarydinosaurs · 22/01/2026 07:26

I’m really sad their clothes were such good quality and I had a few nice items from there. The Laura Ashley X was great.

ThePoshUns · 22/01/2026 07:30

I’m not surprised, I would say they are quite a niche brand. Appeals to people who see themselves as a bit quirky.

Lovemycat2023 · 22/01/2026 07:56

This might seem a bit harsh but I guess there will be stock they sell off to recover some money - maybe on one of those sites where they don’t advertise which brand it is?

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 22/01/2026 07:57

Oh no. I thought the quality was great.

Jumpers lasted ages and were often viscose which I love and doesn't bobbles.

wandererofthekingdom · 23/01/2026 13:21

I wonder what exactly went wrong for them as they have some really dedicated followers and some celebrity names which support them.

FerriswheelsKissesandLilacs · 23/01/2026 13:28

Oh no :( I have quite a few Joanie dresses and all of them get worn regularly. I was intending to buy more and also some shoes from there.

HerNeighbourTotoro · 23/01/2026 16:19

Moonlightfrog · 21/01/2026 18:15

Same. I love some of their designs but they seem over priced for what they are.

They were definitely not overpriced, people are just too mued to cheap polyester tat from Shein and similar. The quality of the material was most of the time really good for Joanie, no comparison with most high street and they had to charge for it.

The quality of the clothes they provided required higher prices, and they did shot up over the past few years- and with the COL, weaker economy etc, people are not as willing to spend.
I know many companies struggled because of unpredictable US market tariffs, customers over there being upset to pay extra for customs and with long waiting times, returning orders, companies having to issue refunds and losing a a shed loads of money as a result, having to stop traiding with US temporarily. This and the preexisting Brexit problem means it's just not achievble for many independent companies to continue trading.
I love Joanie, but my salary has not gone up by 50%, nd many of their clothing have (I got thefirst dress from themfor £35 a bit over 3 years ago, now the same items were about £80 and I could not buy anything unless it was on sale).

trustedadult · 23/01/2026 20:54

The clothes are also frumpy as fuck

there's that

I agree. Joanie was not overpriced. I see so many threads on here moaning about how people only want natural fibres/ good quality/ ethical clothes but they're not willing to pay for it.

user593 · 23/01/2026 22:24

I’ve just noticed Russell & Bromley have gone under too (but acquired by Next). Their website isn’t accepting orders or returns either.

They definitely were not not frumpy. I guess it depends what your style is, you probably wouldn't find a body con dress there, no.

But they had pockets 😂

ReadySaltedSquares · 23/01/2026 22:32

Loved - and own - a lot of their clothes. However, too many influencers and too many ‘celeb’ collabs that I think didn’t help in the brand as they’d hoped. It might be just me but I think Dawn ‘white bread fixed my endometriosis’ Porter and ‘I’m a character midlife dopamine dresser’ influencer devalued a brilliant brand.

You sound like someone with zero imagination.

Zov · 23/01/2026 22:35

Well, I have never heard of them soooooooooooo.

Walks quietly out of thread.......... 🚶

Wednesdaysotherchild · 23/01/2026 22:40

I’m gutted too, loved their tshirts and cords and knitwear…

FlyHighLikeABird · 23/01/2026 22:56

I have never known what Joanie style is, so I just went on their website, and I have to be honest, I don't know whether they have had a recent style shift or it's always like that, but the models look embarrassed to be wearing some of those clothes. Vintage nods can be so cute, I imagined fluffy 50's cardis, quirky but cute prints or form-fitting but chic dresses- but honestly, those cardis are so bulky and viscose/polyester and not quirky in a good way. Ditto the dresses. I can imagine that in the midi-dress floral era some of the stuff might have worked, but there isn't one thing on there I would leave the house in and I have pretty broad taste.

I keep thinking perhaps it looks better in person, in fact, I bet it does as none of the models have any remote sense of quirky style needed to carry any of this stuff off.

The co-ords must be deliberately ugly/cute or something. The patterns! The cut! I literally cannot imagine anyone ever purchasing these.

Whoever shot their latest catalogue looks should be shot. They are making Boden look amazing.

henlake7 · 23/01/2026 23:56

Each to their own, Boden for me is boring old lady clothes (like a really expensive version of Bon Marche!).
I find all my Joanie bits really flattering on and very well made so hopefully will last me years. Also the company had some serious sustainable and ethical credentionals which you don't see that much these days.
I loved their hint of vintage vibe. 🙁

Same. This is very much a newsflash to me. Knew nothing about them.
