New years resolution - wear ALL the clothes in my wardrobe

Not outfits based on whether they need ironing, if I wore it last time I saw that person, how long it takes to dry in the winter etc etc Felt like a bit of a fraud the first time I wore some trousers that I usually save "for best" but I'm loving it! Trying to do a no spend 2026 and think this will help. Will be interesting to see if there's things I hardly ever reach for and whether there are any genuine gaps - expect there'll be a decent sized donation pile at the end of the year. Had anyone else done this before?

I am on day 2 of wearing things I haven’t worn for ages - a jumper yesterday which I love but irritates me and too warm to wear anything other than a vest under. Sadly that will go to a charity shop once washed.
On my to do list is putting all the unworn items together to make it easier to remember about them, as PP suggested.
Thar reminded me of something else I do, which might be helpful to others. I have kept a load of clothes which are too small for me now, although I am losing weight, very slowly,
I have ordered these clothes in according to how close they are to fitting, with the ‘almost fit’ on the top, need to lose a fair bit in the middle, and ‘a heck of a long way to go’ at the bottom. Then order within those categories as to how close I am to wearing them again. When I feel like I have lost a bit, I try them on in order and stop when I get to something that’s too small. It is such a great feeling to get back into clothes again, spurs on the healthy eating, saves money, and reduces storage space.

I'm in work & wearing a The Kooples shirt that i bought in early 2020 & always mentally kept it 'as good'

I'm wearing a v neck lambswool jumper over it & i have to say it looks & feels good.

Dh said 'oh you look very dashing' this morning as i was leaving!

therealmccoy1234 · 20/01/2026 15:47

So since starting this I have worn a grey jumper that I thought I loved but it turns out I don't (but potentially wore it with too wide and loose trousers) and a blue jumper I never wear which I'm still on the fence about. I'll wash & return to the other end of the wardrobe and see how I feel about them when they've worked their way back to the front. Certainly, making a bit more effort has lifted my January mood! Only say I've been in gym wear all day was yesterday as a WFH, walk the dog, go to gym day

Today i wore an outfit to work which should have worked but i felt 'wrong' in it

There's no particular reason it didn't feel right but i think something was off with the proportions of the cardigan with the trousers.

Objectively i looked fine but i didn't feel like 'me' as much

I wore a navy wool boxy shaped cardigan from COS a few years ago & a silky patterned shirt with a small pussy bow from a small Italian boutique 3 years ago. I've barely worn either

I wore them with navy heavy jersey carrot shaped trousers

I will try them in other combinations before i give up on them but i won't wear in that configuration again

It's good to be mixing it up a bit though.

I think my work wardrobe could do with a few updates though

Missingpate · 20/01/2026 21:34

I wore a long forgotten blue knitted and/or poncho, that I feel I should love but find the neck really restrictive. So I think that will have to go.
Good to figure out what doesn’t work as well as what does.

That sounds a fantastic outfit. I want that cardigan! I’m not doing too badly extending my range a bit, but weather and the need to wear pretty robust clothing and shoes for running errands currently setting the stylistic parameters. Will try harder.

justasking111 · 20/01/2026 22:35

I found two jumpers never worn, with the tags still on last week. This was after pulling out all my jumpers. Jumpers I hadn't worn for a couple of years.

HollywentLightly · 20/01/2026 23:14

I'm the same @BigSkies2022 , I'm cold in summer so I'm all about layers and warmth at all costs at the moment. Today was a very functional leggings and oversized cable jumper. I love the jumper but it's too long so I need to put in a few stitches so it sits with a front tuck for a bit of shape.

Aaaaaaaaawwwwwww · 21/01/2026 15:58

Like Chandler?!

In all seriousness, I agree with this. I didn’t wear a cashmere jumper because I was worried about washing it, but wore it the other day and felt soft and cozy all day :)

OMGitsnotgood · 21/01/2026 16:58

I think it’s helpful to work out why we haven’t worn these things. If it just doesn’t suit, that’s not going to change so need to sell or donate.

I’ve a few tops that I like but they don’t seem to go with any bottoms I own. Or I don’t have the footwear or outer layer etc So need to either decide what might work and buy things to complete the outfit , or decide it’s not worth the expense and get rid.

BigSkies2022 · 22/01/2026 22:32

Today I broke out of my boots and robust trousers mould to wear navy monk strap brogues , navy tights, navy A line skirt from old/original Jaeger, silk navy shirt from original Jaeger, silk scarf from 12 years ago and two items from last year - COS jumper and Massimo Dutti jacket. Also DeMellier bag, a birthday present from October.

was visiting dad in nursing home and shopping in Waitrose and I could have as easily slobbed around in jeans and Chelsea boots. But I made an effort to put an outfit together and wear more of my wardrobe, old and new.

2026IsMyYear · 23/01/2026 11:17

That outfit sounds amazing especially tjr shoes, where did you get them please?

Nice navy shoes are hard to find

I recently rescued two unworn Jaeger shirts, probably around 25 years old, from my mum’s wardrobe. The quality is incredible!

BigSkies2022 · 23/01/2026 14:31

The monk straps are O’Keeffe’s - but I think they may have stopped trading as when I search I can only find EBay and Etsy listings. If you find different intell, please let me know as they are great shoes.

BigSkies2022 · 23/01/2026 14:39

There’s a similar pair from a brand called Thomas Bird - the website is tblon.com/collections/monk-strap shoes

I bought them after seeing Carey Mulligan’s wardrobe in the film with Ralph Fiennes about the discovery of the Sutton Hoo warship. I am a superficial person and I remember the shoes more than anything else about the film.

autumn1610 · 24/01/2026 09:05

Oh I love this idea. I turn my hangers round so once it’s worn the hanger is the right way again. Really helps me when I do a wardrobe clear out. Or if I try your idea see what I haven’t worn yet!

therealmccoy1234 · 24/01/2026 20:09

I've done really well this week - layered tops that I wouldn't have done before and worn "fancy" tops with jeans and t-shirts with smart trousers for work which is a bit new to me. I've had a couple of compliments too which has been lovely

2026IsMyYear · 24/01/2026 23:41

I started off strong but peterd out midweek. I wore black slimfit tapered anklegrazers from m&s with a black cashmere whistles roll neck & burgundy suede chelsea boots on Friday.

Nothing too challenging but its a failsafe outfit for me.

I'm falling into old habits as i've bought some beautiful new things in past month & i'm stockpiling them & refusing to wear them.

Im my head i"m keeping for some 'events' but no event planned

Missingpate · 25/01/2026 07:58

Wore a grey white stuff dress yesterday felt a
little smart for doing housework but we had an impromptu stop at the pub in the afternoon and was nice to be wearing it then. Happy to tick off liking this dress. Will try another today.

OMGitsnotgood · 25/01/2026 08:28

i wore a blouse yesterday that whilst lovely is a bit short for me, and the reason why it hasn’t been worn for ages. Another one to donate. Spurred on by this thread I am going to stop dithering about getting rid.

BigSkies2022 · 25/01/2026 13:17

changed out of‘errands wear’ yesterday evening to go to the cinema: navy maxmara dress, navy tights, chunky navy alpaca socks over the tights with chunky loafers, big burgundy cashmere scarf and black jumper worn as a scarf.

Today I have washed my go - to jumpers, so they will still be drying tomorrow, which means I will have to wear something different!

therealmccoy1234 · 29/01/2026 07:58

I think I've found another top for the cull. Wore a rugby shirt the other day but only for a couple of hours so hung it on the outside of the wardrobe rather than put it in the wash. Every day I've got dressed I've looked at it but then reached for something else so I obviously don't love it. I wonder how long it will stay there.until I pick it up again....

Wore a dress today that’s been in the drawer and never worn since I bought it and totally loved it! So that was nice.

justasking111 · 04/02/2026 19:59

I've been wearing clothes I haven't worn for a long time. Reorganized jumpers, shirts. Found some trousers in another wardrobe. I've lost weight in the last year. Some things are just too big now which was a lovely surprise.

SoScarletItWas · 04/02/2026 20:01

Success today. Navy culottes and navy fine knit jumper - I’ve never worked out how to wear the culottes in winter; it’s easy in summer with leopard sling backs - but I wore them with my ever-reliable brown knee boots and it really worked!

Mr Scarlet said I looked like a pirate, which I think makes it even more successful 😄
