TROUSERS - it's all wide legs and flares - or is it?

Well?

Looking at websites lately and it seems that trousers are now very wide, very floppy and anything straight (although they do exist) are confined to the bottom on the list.

And don't get me on about barrel legs- the John Wayne of Jeans.

I try to keep vaguely fashionable at my ancient age but I also resent being cynically driven to ditch the old and in with the new.
That's fashion, I know.

I do have some boyfriend jeans and some wide leg cords and linen trousers but I also have more straight legs and cigarette style.

What are you wearing, oh lovely posters in your 50s?

58, 5ft, size 8 and wear whatever I feel like 😁 Love my wide palazzo jeans! They’re so comfortable and make my bum look great😂

I do wear skinnies and straight leg too but have never actually seen a pair of carrot or barrel leg that look good on anyone tbh.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2026 09:57

I absolutely hated the carrot ones on me.

borntobequiet · 15/01/2026 10:05

Not for me, in my early seventies. Hate anything loose or flappy (except for loose linen trousers in the summer when it’s dry) and just keep wearing straight leg or skinnies through the madness every time it comes around. They suit my body shape far better.

Floisme · 15/01/2026 10:32

Skinnies were just as mad and got just as extreme. The main difference I can see is that, for the time being at least, the high street offers choices whereas, when skinnies were dominant, I was so bored, I was wearing dresses.

oscalo · 15/01/2026 10:46

It depends on your shape and how things suit YOU. As for me, well I have a few pairs of straight kind of wide (well not skinny!) trousers. I hate the flappy sail like legs on many trousers now, awful looking things (on me), it's like I'm about to take off if there's a puff of wind. I don't wear jeans ever, never liked them on me.

TBH, well on me anyway, a straight (not wide) leg is flattering. But I don't really care about trends I just wear what I think suits me. Problem is, if it's a trend, that's all you'll find in the shops! So I have to dig out what I already have, which is no harm. Save the planet and all that. 😊

I'm in my sixties BTW and love clothes but am not a fashion follower IYSWIM.

goldenlockets · 15/01/2026 11:01

I bought a pair from Boden- ponte type fabric - smart trousers. I sent them back as they were so wide all the way down from the bum.
Many other reviews said the same thing that they looked like clown trousers.

I often wear wide-ish leg trousers in summer, but I really don’t like very wide leg, and as for barrel leg…

IMO the designers scrabble around for ‘something new’, so people will rush to buy it because it’s the fashion, and of course they need to sell trousers. So I dare say they think, ‘Of course they’re hideous, but Jill Public will still buy them because they’re ’the latest’.

Similar here. I ordered some smart navy trousers from Next and I could have got both my legs in one leg with still room to spare and the bum area was all saggy.
Hideous.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/01/2026 11:24

I’m very short and wear them. I wear them tight on the waist and hips/bum. I tuck in the front of my jumper, French tuck. To draw attention to the smaller waist.

it looks great. I feel weird in skinnies now.

Makemineacosmo · 15/01/2026 12:12

Cigarette pants are the look for 2026 according to Vogue. Hurrah!

RaraRachael · 15/01/2026 14:02

Oh God, not cigarette pants again. I remember wearing them to work last time they were fashionable and hated the way they stuck to my calves.

NewLimeFish · 16/01/2026 00:25

cigarette, stovepipe, straight leg, relaxed skinnies, all coming back in now. Also, 'balloon trousers', and combats (depending who you ask. The slouchy, wide, baggy and 90's fits are on the way out. Barrel, horseshoe, flares, going. I'll keep wearing my various wide trouser styles, but I won't be buying more. Except palazzos, which I wear every summer.

Yes!

I love cigarette trousers.

I like the various wide shapes too mind you. My only gripe (as a tall/ curvy/ muscley size 14) is that they often scale up the wide-ness too much for the larger sizes. What looks cute on a petite person can end up just too much fabric on me.

Cigarette to me isn't skin tight- more slim and straightish with a taper at the ankles.

Well, I just bought a pair of barrel leg jeans from Tu yesterday. Bought a few, tried on at home and deciding to keep the dark wash pair.

However, they’re different to my skinny stretch or straight leg jeans, it’s a different shape and these have no stretch in them.

RaraRachael · 16/01/2026 18:03

@goldenlockets I used to wear my cigarette trousers with popsox so they clung to the socks.

I wear with boots or trainer type shoes. Or smart shoes and short pop socks- just footsie ones.

Wide leg trousers and barrel leg jeans. Sorry!

Thecows · 16/01/2026 21:56

Skinnies are in the loft in case they ever come back, used to love them but they just look so dated now. I'm 5ft 4", slim and in my 60's, I feel odd in anything but wide legged now tbh

SouthernNights59 · 16/01/2026 23:14

I'm in my mid 60s and still wearing boot cut, as I have forever. I have tried numerous pair of wide leg jeans and they just make me look short, I'm 5ft 7.

suburburban · 17/01/2026 07:40

I’m wearing wide legged tailored trousers, I’m not that tall but they look ok I think

straight legged jeans or those White stuff Katie jeans, they fit well, I’d love another pair

i got rid of my skinny jeans bar one pair, I hated getting them off over my feet at night to take them off

i haven’t attempted barrel but I don’t think they would suit me

may be a case of “roll out the barrel”

trustedadult · 17/01/2026 07:47

Ha ha. My skinnies in the loft too.
too old and wise. I Love that gap long and Lean jeans are back (on sale on Next online)

Octomingo · 17/01/2026 07:47

Mid40s 5-9. I rarely throw anything out, so my trousers and jeans reflect the last 30 years of leg.

I wear flares, wide leg, cigarette, skinny, depending on mood, weather and what style I'm currently channeling.

PuppyMonkey · 17/01/2026 07:50

I’m late 50s and refuse to wear the hideous wide leg monstrosities out there at the moment. I don’t think they suit anyone, straight legs or relaxed skinnies for me, mostly bought from Vinted.

SisterTeatime · 17/01/2026 07:53

I can’t wear wide leg jeans, they just don’t suit me. I always struggle if I can’t instantly visualise which shoes I’ll wear with a trouser style.

I suit the classic mom jean style and I’m thinking of just sticking with 501s for ever now.

I also suit the carrot and barrel legs for summer/between seasons but won’t wear with boots as I look like an army cadet gone wrong, so I don’t really wear trousers much in the winter.
