TROUSERS - it's all wide legs and flares - or is it?

Well?

Looking at websites lately and it seems that trousers are now very wide, very floppy and anything straight (although they do exist) are confined to the bottom on the list.

And don't get me on about barrel legs- the John Wayne of Jeans.

I try to keep vaguely fashionable at my ancient age but I also resent being cynically driven to ditch the old and in with the new.
That's fashion, I know.

I do have some boyfriend jeans and some wide leg cords and linen trousers but I also have more straight legs and cigarette style.

What are you wearing, oh lovely posters in your 50s?

What are boyfriend jeans, exactly??

I personally find the name really irritating. Like baggy jeans are only for guys? 🙄 They’re just slightly baggy jeans, not like some of the really baggy/wide jeans in fashion now. They’re more like straight leg jeans but slightly baggier

I do think the real problem with bucking the trouser trend, is the tops available in the shops are designed to work with wider/looser bottoms, and don’t look right with tight fitting trousers. (Similarly lots of your old jumpers and tops will look too baggy with wide legs, which I think is why so many women find them hard to style, you need everything new.)

I've just tried on some trousers I bought almost 20 years ago - Boden, pure wool, lined, dark grey with a faint pinstripe - and they are perfect! They are fitted over the hips and bum and flare out slightly/ wider leg. Floppy but not clown like.
I almost sold them years ago and am glad I didn't. They are too smart for everyday (I WFH) but would be fine for something smarter.

Next have got some nice wide trousers in, I wear for work that aren’t too wide. Sometimes I wear tracksuit bottoms when at home, rarely wear jeans anymore, I like comfort.

Looser styles are having their moment, definitely. But you don’t have to follow mainstream fashion. It’s not obligatory.

I wear what I think suits me, which is a limited number of styles discovered through trying loads of trousers on and the majority looking shockingly shit on me:

I like:

-High-waisted, tailored wide leg trousers, not in cheap/thin material, preferably with darts or a pleat at the waist. Casual styles don’t suit me. Mid or low rise looks hideous on me.
-High waisted, Slim or straight jeans (occasionally, as not a huge jeans fan) - hate all other styles.

Hard no to flares, bootcut, carrot, barrel, ‘Mom’ or skinny jeans or trousers.. They just don’t suit ny shape.

This knowledge has been hard won! 😉

Edited

I think you and me Must be the same.

I am loving wide leg tailored trousers right now. With pleats and belt loops. I find they look infinitely better with a belt. High waisted for me too. Smart but comfortable!

Im 58, 5’7” and a 12-ish (probably more like a 13!)

I don't like the wide leg look; however, I thought I should at least try a pair so ordered some from M&S. They arrived yesterday, and I literally laughed out loud when I took them out of the wrapping. They look ridiculous - each leg is about 1 foot wide back and front, and the same width all the way up to the waist. If I wanted to dress as a clown for a fancy dress party, this would be the outfit!!

That's exactly the experience I had. Absolutely ridiculous look!

I have bad memories of wearing wide legged jeans in the 70s and nearly breaking my neck getting my foot caught in them as I came down stairs.

Not a trend I will be repeating.

Just wore my new M&S dark wash high waisted flates today at an academic event - two other women were wearing the exact same pair! One 52 yo and one 35yo. Im 49yo. Clearly a popular and flattering shape! they are apparently no longer on the m&s website so i am assuming they have gone quickly… They were £40
