Wool coat that won’t swamp me (I’m 5ft3)

Any ideas? I also have very narrow shoulders so anything wide shouldered or without defined shoulders (eg with raglan sleeves or dropped shoulders) looks weird on me. I’m a size 10. I prefer single breasted - double again feels quite swamping! I love chocolate brown and there is so much brown in the shops I was sure I’d find something this year but not yet! I also like khaki green but don’t want to look military (!). I prefer buttons to a tie waist as I think that can look a bit bulky. Typing all this out I realise I am really very picky! I would also be up for a checked coat. Navy also a possibility. Not black or camel though; I look awful in them. Please help!

Try Hobbs

edemamequeen · 26/12/2025 09:33

Thanks but they don’t have any petite sizes left. Also ideally I’d prefer brown to burgundy. (I know I am picky!)
Hobbs has nothing left in my size.

Whistles have a lovely petite wool coat.

This is exactly the kind of sleeve/shoulder I’m looking for - but I don’t suit grey or burgundy sadly

Boden have this one available in all sizes.

This looks like it would feel massive even if the size was right - all those oversized cocoon double breasted styles make me look like a round ball or like I am five and trying on my mum’s clothes!

Sorry previous one describes as Aubergine. But this one is brown, quite spendy but an investment

Ooh this might work! Thank you

What’s your budget? I’m 160cms and size 10, I find MaxMara great for wool coats and the fit is spot on. I like the funnel neck personally and a mid calf finish for warmth.

Ah thanks but grey and camel look awful on me sadly.

I’ll have a look. I like funnel necks. I was hoping not to spend more than £200 but if it will last a long time I could go higher.

My first thought was Hobbs or MaxMara.
House of Bruar Ladies' Coats | Women's Winter & Waterproof Coats | House of Bruar

I'd consider going to an outlet village where there is an outerwear shop and trying styles on, and look for a classic style that fits you well. It should last you for decades.
If you can get a half-price £500 coat that you love, it will be a bargain.

For a wool coat with only some wool, try M&S, Next, Uniqlo etc

Scrabblingabout · 26/12/2025 11:18

I have got a lovely Hobbs petite one so try there and Reiss petite too.

Scrabblingabout · 26/12/2025 11:20

Apologies I didn't read the whole thread including that Hobbs is out of stock in your size!

Comefromaway · 26/12/2025 11:24

I hesitate to reccomend Max Mara due to the price but I tried on so many coats but ended up with a navy Max Mara. I have small shoulders and am 5ft 3

UpMyself · 26/12/2025 11:38

I happened to see a coat that I loved decades ago in an outlet village. I knew I'd always love it. It was £££, about £250 then but that would be about £490 now, but I could have bought several cheaper coats that I'd have not loved over the years.

BruachAbhann · 26/12/2025 11:51

Salsa Jeans! I'm the same as you- size 10, narrow shoulders, 5 ft 3! I went crazy in Salsa jeans and bought two wool coats as I was so thrilled to finally find ones I loved and that fitted well.

And in brown Reiss have this.

I really struggle with paying £340 for something that has low content of wool/cashmere.

There use to be a time where if you were paying so much money the fibres were pure and natural

minipie · 26/12/2025 16:55

I’m also 5’3 and petite frame , narrow shoulders

Agree entirely about the cocoon or oversized coats
The wrap styles with dressing gown type belt also don’t work

You either need something slimline and fitted or an unlined “car coat” style which is quite thin (and therefore not as warm!)

Slimline and fitted is not in fashion right now but places like Hobbs and Karen Millen always have them. Karen Millen has a good petite selection, I find their normal range fits me fine at 5’3 though.

Those Salsa Jeans ones look good. You might do well with European brands like Esprit, La Redoute, Massimo Dutti (they often have brown!) Gerard Darel.

MaxMara gorgeous but pricey!!
