Is a French manicure naff?

Sighohbarn · 25/12/2025 23:07

I get my nails done - partly because it's easy for work. Partly because my actual nails are paper-thin and tear very easily.

I'm not terribly wild in my colour choices. Never do nail art or 'feature' nails - mostly just fairly muted and the occasional bit of sparkle.

I quite like the idea of something fresh and natural looking. A hundred years ago I used to get a French manicure. I think that probably looks a bit naff now. Is there a new, trendy French manicure that's classy?

I like it still. It looks classy and clean to me !

Penisbeakeralltheclassics · 26/12/2025 03:21

Fake large acrylic nails are naff. Nail art is naff. A french manicure would look nice.

I may not be the arbiter of modern nail trends, so best ignored 😁

I like the ‘soap nails’ look, you might like that OP.

I think if they are short you can get away with a french manicure, otherwise naff.

QueenofFox · 26/12/2025 05:43

People paint the white tip a different colour now - so a think strip dark red or grey or bright pink. It looks good and fresh.

I read that as “if you are short” and actually wondered why that made a difference 😄

JLou08 · 26/12/2025 06:04

French is still classy, not naff at all.
If you use Pinterest there are some lovely nail designs on there that could give you some inspiration.

Sighohbarn · 26/12/2025 06:13

Yes, my nails are always short. I think you're right that a French manicure perhaps doesn't look as classy on long nails.

Soap nails do look nice. Thank you for that.

And I also like the different coloured tips on a French manicure - wonder if I could live with that for a month though?

A french ombre version I really like is the grey one with the black and red. I've done similar ones myself.

Plus some other ombre versions just for ideas

I absolutely love french manicure, I unfortunately bite my nails so can't do it, I must have brainwashed DD because when she does her nails in the salon or stick on, it is always a french one.
I find it so elegant and classy.

dinesaurrawr · 26/12/2025 06:50

Not naff at all, timeless !

Short nails are classy
One colour is classy
Fake nails and designs are tacky AF
Pointy nails are not classy.

Sighohbarn · 26/12/2025 08:24

Lots of people saying French is timeless and classy. What exactly do you mean when you say French? If you Google, there are 1000 different variations.

  • Pinky / beige for the nail?
  • Square?
  • Bright white or off white tips?

Something like this? (pic attached I think)

Long nails with a white tip are not “French” - they’re naff. Google “soap nails” - that’s a really fresh natural style.

FestiveBauble · 26/12/2025 08:57

So a classy French to me is a neutral nail base (close to matching your natural nail colour) with a thin white lined tip, the classic. Shape wise I think on an almond / rounded it’s classy, on a square it can be mob wives 😂 It’s also cute if done in other colours (pink, red) but the classic white is classy.

Soap nails are definitely having a moment, they’re more of a “clean girl” interpretation of the ombré nail. Glazed donut nails also are quite popular, but you need to get the right type of chrome or it looks too shiny!

Im a non-classy nail girl personally, I love a good nail art set, but mine is all hand drawn art (e.g Christmas nails at the moment are red french tips with gold bows hand drawn) rather than transfers. I love a good jazzy nail!

Not classy

Ideas and trying to be helpful is never "not classy". What is not classy is being a bitch. Regardless of your self perceived social status, ugly on the inside is forever, nails come off every couple of weeks. Know which I'd prefer.

Comtesse · 26/12/2025 09:10

Micro french nails can look really nice.

Soapy nails are nice, neat, clean looking and understated.

OP asked about what was classy. The ideas you shared weren’t imo.
Everyone on the internet doesn’t have to agree with you, you know.

I’m with you. It’s literally just finger nails and being a bitch about other people’s choices of pretty much anything which doesn’t affect anyone else, is the very definition of lacking in class.

French nails on not too long nails look nice imo, clean and tidy.
