Is a French manicure naff?

I get my nails done - partly because it's easy for work. Partly because my actual nails are paper-thin and tear very easily.

I'm not terribly wild in my colour choices. Never do nail art or 'feature' nails - mostly just fairly muted and the occasional bit of sparkle.

I quite like the idea of something fresh and natural looking. A hundred years ago I used to get a French manicure. I think that probably looks a bit naff now. Is there a new, trendy French manicure that's classy?

I’m with you. It’s literally just finger nails and being a bitch about other people’s choices of pretty much anything which doesn’t affect anyone else, is the very definition of lacking in class.

If you join a discussion on the internet about whether something is “classy,” you’re basically asking for opinions, not facts. And “classy” is one of those words that means very different things to different people. So when some people say “no,” they’re not saying you are bad or wrong—they’re just saying it doesn’t match their idea of classy. HTH

Sorry but I think the different colour tips just look like people have luck or worse blood under the tips of their nails.

Lots of people saying French is timeless and classy. What exactly do you mean when you say French? If you Google, there are 1000 different variations.

  • Pinky / beige for the nail?
  • Square?
  • Bright white or off white tips?

Something like this? (pic attached I think)

The "classic" french isn't really seen much these days from what I see. It was regular nail length and shape with a natural soft pink, which was sort of translucent. The tip was also a soft, not stark, white and followed the natural nail line - where your own nail goes white. Basically it just made the white part of the nail look really clean and the nails nicely maintained.

These days I have not been able to find those colours. They are well out of fashion. The whites are stark white and the pinks are pink.

A lot of the lines are a deep V / oval with the white travelling down the side walls, particularly on extensions.

Some more pics. Can't believe I've found pic of the softer white (pic 1). The pink isn't quite right, the other pics are better for that but have the starker white tip.

I always get a French manicure but only because growth is less obvious and I don’t need them redone as much. I do get them cut back every time as can’t stand very long nails that make everyday tasks so much harder.
