Tulle skirt with flattering waistband

I think I’m probably looking for something that doesn’t exist, but I’ve got an idea in my head for a festive party outfit which features a black tulle skirt.

However, I’m a size 14, so I’m looking for a flattering waistband and ideally the skirt would smooth over the belly and have the fullness starting from the hips rather than the stomach area.

i had one a few years ago which I really wanted to love but essentially it was a big puffy skirt with a thin waistband, and this meant that the fullness started immediately from the waist. So I know exactly what I don’t want but not sure where to find what I DO want.

is this an impossible dream or can anyone make any recommendations?

ideally I would prefer it not to have different tiers of fabric for that raggedy edges look. I’m thinking more sophisticated older ballerina 🤩

I don’t think you’re dreaming at all. I’m around your size and I’ve found that the waistband makes such a huge difference with tulle. The ones with a wider, more structured band sit much smoother and don’t puff out right from the waist.
You might have luck with skirts that have a thicker elastic band or a flat panel at the front. They tend to start the fullness a bit lower so it falls nicer over the stomach. I’ve seen a few like that on the high street lately, so they definitely exist.

I think I know what you mean. I’m short and roundish so anything that flares directly from the waist looks awful. I found this one in M&S earlier in the year but it’s cotton so not what you want but might give people an idea of the shape you mean. They do have a nice lace one on there at the moment which is really flattering.

I have the Hush tulle skirt, it’s tiered so can look a wee bit ‘poofy’ but I don’t find the waistband unflattering. It might be a bit more flouncy than you are after though.

I bought this in a local boutique last week and I’m so pleased with it. The stars are so pretty and the shape is not pouffy and it’s very flattering with the band sitting on the waist. I have never worn a skirt in this style before as I’ve always found them unflattering. I’m 5’ 9 and an 8 / small.

Maybe try a belly/waist scarf? Buy a purpose made with a clip at the hip for a smooth waist band to skirt line.

I've got one with a very wide waistband but it has horizontal tiers, is that any good? It's gorgeous and quality, but not cheap.

Thanks everyone for all of these comments and suggestions. I didn’t think there would be so many with great advice and experience! Suffice to say I’ve now got a few leads I’m tracking down. I’ve bought a vintage monsoon one on Vinted to try but I’m also considering some of those posted above so thanks for all the links and tips.
I’m now off to find the perfect bow cardigan and satin stilettos to complete my outfit 😍

Thank you. I think this would work for some folk but I actually tried this with a tulle skirt before and it just didn’t work with the one I had, but that’s not to say it’s not a great solution for someone else.

Thank you for these comments too. I’m hoping I’ve not raised (my own?) expectations with the older ballerina look - that’s what I’m aiming for, albeit I am more likely to deliver “fat fairy” 🤣.

i was probably slightly off the mark anyway as my ideal look has a mid calf a line shape tulle effect skirt with a neat statement cardigan. So maybe more 50’s style chic, but let’s see where I get to!
