Tulle skirt with flattering waistband

I think I’m probably looking for something that doesn’t exist, but I’ve got an idea in my head for a festive party outfit which features a black tulle skirt.

However, I’m a size 14, so I’m looking for a flattering waistband and ideally the skirt would smooth over the belly and have the fullness starting from the hips rather than the stomach area.

i had one a few years ago which I really wanted to love but essentially it was a big puffy skirt with a thin waistband, and this meant that the fullness started immediately from the waist. So I know exactly what I don’t want but not sure where to find what I DO want.

is this an impossible dream or can anyone make any recommendations?

ideally I would prefer it not to have different tiers of fabric for that raggedy edges look. I’m thinking more sophisticated older ballerina 🤩

thanks in advance!

Cathy is lovely to deal with who owns this site, I have purchased a few things from her.

Oh thank you!!!

I’m honestly so excited to be mentioned in Mumsnet (and the skirts are beautiful!)

OP’s outfit idea is gorgeous - a favourite of mine too!

I have this one - it’s burgundy, but it looks like the same style as the black M&S one linked to by the first poster. It has a flat waistband and does exactly want you want it to in terms of not sticking out at the waist. I went up a size so it sits slightly more on the hips which helps even more.

Ignore the styling and the fact that it’s made by Adidas!

OP, I have got exactly what you are looking for, although a size smaller, from Vinted.

It’s vintage monsoon, (search that plus monsoon twilight) and it has a proper waistband, shaping down to the hips and then layers of tulle flaring out from there. Basically, being vintage, it’s properly made. Cost a fiver.

Got to be worth a look!

I came on to mention exactly this I got mine on Vinted had to size up as vintage . I’ve since sold it on due to weight loss but it was lovely . I’d look for a size 16 as it comes up small

There are some lovely ones in White Company, soft and flowy, but pricey…

She is, indeed.

I came here to say how dreamy the White Company ones are. I’m short and stocky though and have had to admit that the romantic styles I’ve always loved really don’t suit me, so I’m resisting!

I have the Elven Loves one and I absolutely adore it and wear it all the time. With heels, chunky trainers, DMs

it’s well worth the money

Just wanted to come back and update on the tulle skirt idea after all of your lovely help and input. I ended up getting a Monsoon skirt on vinted which hung beautifully and was super flattering. Not quite the tulle skirt I was going for originally but it more than met the brief on the day.

thanks to everyone for your input on this thread and hopefully some other folk picked up a few tips about where to find “the skirt” 🤩.

wishing you all a fabulous festive season and hope you all sparkle wherever you go!

Thank you for the update. That looks a lovely outfit @NancyCarey I have that cardigan too! It always gets compliments.

SpiralSister · 25/12/2025 07:48

Yes, @NancyCarey! I have that exact one! It’s a beautiful skirt. Lovely outfit. Glad you got sorted, happy Christmas!

PrincessofEuphrania · 26/12/2025 08:29

I glad you were able to find a lovely skirt.

I bought a beautiful blush pink tulle like skirt with a fabulous deep waistband about 10 years ago and have NEVER worn it due to be unable to find a top to go with it either colour wise or shape wise!

I finally gave it to my sister who then gave it back to me after suffering the same problem. So now it’s still sat in my wardrobe but I refuse to get rid of it as one day I might actually find the right top!
