@socialdilemmawhattodo What was the issue with Victoria?? Intrigued!

Oh they definitely chose some pieces through the series that made me question their judge status. But I do think she captured a great likeness, and their chemistry was great to watch too.

Edited

I think they're wrong to favour originality and quirkiness over likeness. With a landscape or an abstract you can do what you like, and you can do all kinds of things with a portrait, but you MUST, MUSt get the likeness spot on to win the prize! That's the basic requirement for a portrait, and of the three finalists, the 'winner' had the least successful likeness.

But, like so much telly, it's a put-up job. From their comments over the past few weeks, it's clear they wanted her for the winner and she was going to get it whatever she did.

LittleGreenDuck · 06/12/2025 10:50

I really like the teal version of that top. Though too expensive for me and I'd have nowhere to wear it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/12/2025 23:28

I bloody love her. Incredibly accomplished and very, very funny. Perfect comic timing. Could be a standup if she ever tires of academia. Would watch her if she wore a sack.
Ditto Lucy Worsley and the incredible Alice Robert’s.

They are all brilliant in their own way, it does exasperate me that the ones that get 'famous' have to be conventionally attractive though. I know so many clever and capable women who don't become as successful and who are ordinary looking. I suppose long live Mary Beard.

I think with the three I mentioned, it’s their knowledge, enthusiasm and personality that put them on tv/radio.
Mary Beard is fabulous.

If Hannah Frye knocked at the front door my husband would leave me in a flash. She is awesome in a very multi faceted way.

Each interview takes about 50 mins. The interviewee chooses 5 items for Room101 and they discuss. Not sure if they all make the final edit. Then PM asked for the 1 item that the interviewee would keep for ever. VCM said Gambling as she had made a fortune through it (I am paraphrasing), she was very good at it, but of course nobody else should gamble. It wasnt funny, which it could have been. It felt sneery. I think PM was a little surprised- he must know her quite well. The audience didn't respond well either. I like the format, normally great guests, but I must try and find the shows on the radio.

'She is truly beautiful. And clever and funny too. I may have a new crush'

I'm a bit obsessed with Hannah Fry. Shes ridiculously hot 🔥

I can barely tolerate LW. I don't mind VCM but I don't find her funny.

, it does exasperate me that the ones that get 'famous' have to be conventionally attractive though. Life's like that.

Mixed feelings about the portrait. The artist was indeed lovely and I liked her paintings.

But many much better artists were rejected en route to the final. The judges’ choices were absolutely perverse in this series. I thought the portrait was fine but that commission could have been SO much better than just ‘fine’.😢

Agreed, it seems to be the consensus this year.

An acquaintance of mine applied to be on the show but was rejected as she didn’t have ‘a quirk.’

I liked the commission, and I thought Chloe Barnes’ monoprint of her housemate was wonderful, but I don’t think I’d have chosen CB to win her heat. I think the fact that she was a printmaker adapting her technique for the series helped, but I think she won the prize on the strength of her print of her housemate being stronger than that of the artist who painted a diptych of her daughters (Sally?) I thought Sally produced a better portrait of Brian Cox, but her commission didn’t work as well as her smaller portraits.

I really WANT to like Mary B, but a friend who had her as a tutor at Cambridge disillusioned me. Shall we just say…she wasn’t very sisterly’ to other women, to put it mildly!

What a brilliant trio of women. Imagine if they were in charge of things.

Snakehips47 · 06/12/2025 17:01

I think it’s safe to say we all love her, along with every other female presenter of history, science, mathematics .etc.

I'm watching PAOTY now and have to agree that the artist who did the diptych of her daughters did a more pleasing (IMO) portrait of Brian Cox. I don't particularly like the work of the winner (just not my taste, clearly she's skilled and talented) but, I guess, she was chosen because it was a different medium to the ones who usually win.

Hannah Fry has a lovely house.

She was on the radio version of Room101 with Paul Merton. Saw it being filmed. She was great. Sadly the same filming had Victoria Coren Mitchell. It put me off her for life.

What was it about Victoria CM that put you off?

She's a senior academic. It's a very masculine environment and women are under a lot of pressure to spend all their time mentoring early career researchers while the men go off and publish. You learn you have to be a bit unsisterly if you want to succeed. But also she probably is ND as most senior female academics I work with are, it's a profession that's a natural fit.
