Suggestions for silk basic long sleeved t-shirt which can be worn as a base layer or on it's own?

My daughter (adult, but young) is really suffering with very sensitive skin/ contact dermatitis especially on the inside of her arms (ongoing issue which she's seen a dermatologist for and which comes and goes and is generally worse in winter).

I'd like to get her some silk base layers for Christmas as she is really struggling with many fabrics irritating her skin now long sleeves are necessary - very soft sweatshirts are okay but she needs to be smart casual for work. She has some Uniqlo wool tops she'd like to wear but can't.

I mentioned silk and ahe said if it's silk it's expensive so it'd be nice to be able to wear it all year, without anything over it, not just as a thermal underwear type base layer.

Any ideas? She's 5 ft 6 and a size 8-10 so should be easy to fit at least! Plain colours not patterned ideally.

I know of Lilysilk which does lovely clothing made from silk and cashmere etc. Pricey but meant to be good quality.

Thank you! Is that definitely a legitimate site? I just looked and don't think I've ever been greeted with quite so many pop ups!

https://www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Lightweight_Silk_Interlock_Crew_Neck_Top/pp/P_40804.html they have an offer on at the moment - could be worn underneath another layer?

IndigoBabble · 04/12/2025 14:50

And machine washable!

It is definitely a legitimate company, but yes lots of pop ups!!

Someone posted a link to this company in France:

https://www.soieries-des-cevennes.com/actualites/

I have no own experience of them, just sharing possibilities

Thank you! I've found something suitable on there but am struggling to get the website to recognise my address! It's the right sort of thing and I'll keep trying!

Thank you! It's a good backup but does just look like thermal underwear in the picture - fulfills the primary purpose but not her wish to be able to wear it as a stand alone in summer. If I can't get the French site to accept my order it's a good second opinion, or perhaps one from each...

Thank you for looking! Those seem to be blends - the long sleeve top is 35% silk. They might be lovely but in this case because she's suffering with her skin I'd like to follow through on my offer to get herca couple of 100% silk base layers/ tops.

I've ordered two now so I definitely have something at least, and will add one slightly more "stand alone" / not so obviously long underwear top if I can find something/ make my order go through on the French one!

Thank you! These should at least allow her to wear her wool tops for work without scratching herself to pieces and making her rash spead.

On the work front - I’ve made primark long sleeve t shirts fit the smart casual bill for years by wearing them with decent looking trousers and a semi statement necklace. Or a scarf.

Just in case that gives some more options for making the existing solution more widely wearable.

Thank you! Unfortunately scarves and statement necklaces aren't really an option for her (community work with children, mainly preschool age) - I don't think anything dangling or grabbable would work, but she needs to look professional - lots of interdisciplinary work as well as hands on therapy.
She's very young so feels it's especially important to look professional as she's often advising people older than she is or advocating for parents with other professionals and institutions - the imposter syndrome can really kick in and looking the part helps! I think the skin issues are made worse by stress, but she does love her job and is very good at it...

Think knit sillk is too thin to wear alone. What about bamboo? Or point out base layers last forever so a decent investment

There are some called pure silk which are 100%

For the actual with children time, can take off and a practical long sleeve t shirt isn’t too far wrong.

For the advocating with other professionals - pop the ‘add on’ on and uplift the outfit.

More suit like trousers and a smart belt can also help ‘age’ the look whilst keeping skin kind.

I second Patra and Lands End. Both long-term, reliable retailers. Silkfred's just a marketplace, you never know what you'll really be getting.

I know you said silk , but it reminded me of Bella di Notte , who do really good quality vests , that last for years They are designed to be 'thermal' , but a truly soft mix of silk and merino , with a cotton inside www.belladinotte.com/verona-long-sleeve-vest-ivory

Oh now that says "equally at home as inner and outerwear" - interesting! I've seen what her Uniqlo pure wool has done to the poor skin on the inside of her elbows 😭 which is why I wanted to buy her silk...

Ah ok - must admit I don't have much cause to wear silk myself 😝 so I don't know... I just know it's unlikely to irritate her skin... The only silk thing I own is a sleeping bag liner for hiking 😝
