Suggestions for silk basic long sleeved t-shirt which can be worn as a base layer or on it's own?

My daughter (adult, but young) is really suffering with very sensitive skin/ contact dermatitis especially on the inside of her arms (ongoing issue which she's seen a dermatologist for and which comes and goes and is generally worse in winter).

I'd like to get her some silk base layers for Christmas as she is really struggling with many fabrics irritating her skin now long sleeves are necessary - very soft sweatshirts are okay but she needs to be smart casual for work. She has some Uniqlo wool tops she'd like to wear but can't.

I mentioned silk and ahe said if it's silk it's expensive so it'd be nice to be able to wear it all year, without anything over it, not just as a thermal underwear type base layer.

Any ideas? She's 5 ft 6 and a size 8-10 so should be easy to fit at least! Plain colours not patterned ideally.

For the actual with children time, can take off and a practical long sleeve t shirt isn’t too far wrong.

For the advocating with other professionals - pop the ‘add on’ on and uplift the outfit.

More suit like trousers and a smart belt can also help ‘age’ the look whilst keeping skin kind.

Thanks, I do appreciate the advice - I'm her mum and she's not actually asked me how to dress, just lamented the situation with her skin and how painful and itchy it is, and we were talking about wool clothing for some reason (I think because I was wearing wool and DH has taken over the laundry recently - she asked me if I keep it back to wash it myself - we've both got Uniqlo wool and it was cold today) and she was sad she can't wear hers atm because of her skin...

I don't know if she'd really welcome my fashion tips, she's more likely to try to advise me... but if she does I will try to remember your suggestions!

It's quite cold here so I think she would really like to be able to wear something warm.

thank you - I've ordered from landsend now for the clearly thermal base layer, but these do look nice.

ah brilliant! I will get her one of these too! That should be enough, in addition to the two long underwear style tops from landsend!

Thank you!

I have these. They wash really well.

Those are nice, but I'm looking for closer fitting long sleeved tops to protect her skin from her wool jumpers. I'd like a few of those t-shirts myself though...

I second Patra and Lands End. Both long-term, reliable retailers. Silkfred's just a marketplace, you never know what you'll really be getting.

Thank you - those two retailers are what I've ended up going with.

As you mention Uniqlo, their base layers are great. I have this sensitivity too and always wear their layers under everything now. It's called heat tech and I recommend just starting with the first level as the others can be stifling. In the future, she probably needs to avoid anything wool. I just stick to cotton and manmade fibres now although there are plenty of those that are itchy too!

MamaNell · 05/12/2025 05:49

I bought thin knit silk jumper/ tee shirt from banana republic

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/12/2025 06:53

the uniqlo heat tech shirts are very soft. they are mixed fabric though not scratchy and non sweaty (I think rayon & elastane)

I have a similar issue with eczema on my arms and 100% cotton tops work for me. Primark actually does some great ones which look quite smart and wash well. I just double check the fabric labels before I buy!

Not silk, but I wear Next ‘The Set’ long sleeved round neck tops with smart trousers to work and they look smart and are really soft and comfortable (I have sensory issues), so might be another alternative!

Thank you everyone - lots of great suggestions. I've ordered two of the 100% silk long underwear style from Lands End (not sure why I'd decided it's all one word yesterday) and might still order one of the more outerwear appropriate suggestions.

There are a few things I'd quite like for myself and other family members so will be coming back to some of the retailer/ website suggestions - I've never shopped from any of them (except Next and Uniqlo) before, so I'm glad I posted this question! Thank you all.

I have two long-sleeved v neck silk vests from Patra Silks in London. I've had them for nearly 40 years, washed and worn countless times. They also do bamboo vests.

I would just say, uniqlo lambswool is pretty harsh, I would never wear it next to skin. Merino and cashmere are usually fine for me.
