Help me complete my outfit: low key wedding, 50 something bride

Ok so following my previous thread, I have now got a lovely wool cream A line midi skirt. I now need a satiny/silky top and will wear this plus a wool coat and a nice cashmere wrap for our registry office wedding in the new year. It's all low key. Ideas for the top would be great. I am quite small and want something very slim fitting.

Definitely fitted!! I rather like the shoulders - & at a 4/6 you'd suit them much better than me with my coat hanger shoulders! Personally I think it's too severe, but just throwing it out there ...

Bit of a wild card, but since you're so petite & slim, what about children's sequin tops ...???!

Genius idea to go with teen stuff. Like that one but I need to check it isn't too wide/regular fit as the slim silhouette is vital!

That is so beautiful even if it is not for me.

I feel like I should be inviting you to rhe big day for all your help @EleanorMc67!

Like this but again too loose.

I suppose something fitted with stretch is the best way to describe it.

Or very slim fit cashmere or merino?

Can you tell that I couldn't sleep last night, @anon2022anon & @Scrabblingabout ?!! It was a fun bit of googling!

Glad you like the sequinned ones. I think if they're delicate/not too flashy, they'd look great against wool for a winter wedding. One thing though - I was at a party at the weekend & a woman there was wearing a long-sleeved sequin top for the first time - & she said any time she put her arms against her body the sequins stuck together!! My sequin tops are all short-sleeved so I hadn't thought of that - so something to check if you try some on.

Does it have to tuck in? Or would neat & sitting just on/around the waist suit?

And do you have a budget?

Budget up to £175 and keen on higher quality natural fabrics if possible.

Good point about the sequin issues...okay shall we venture back to satin/silk or thin cashmere/merino??

I like assymetric necklines!

Whoever made the point about the coat and wrap being too much I hear you...I'll plonk the coat down somewhere for the ceremony but yes a wrap falling over all the time could be annoying still!!

It's gorgeous, isn't it? Sorry for seeming like a crazy obsessive with all my posts - I have a deadline for a client that I'm stuck on - so this has been a lovely diversion but I've now spent far too long on it!!! I will stop now ... hope it gives you some ideas at least? It's surprising how just a small change in the wording for a Google search will throw up different options. Tulle/beaded/embroidered are good to try. With fitted/long sleeved/etc. Plus different colours - champagne/ecru/platinum etc. Good luck & do report back if you find your perfect top!!!

EleanorMc67 · 04/12/2025 17:42

I know I said I'd stopped but ... since you're veering towards simple silk-satins now ... I think this is a beautiful shape & the little peplum-type bottom would sit perfectly over your pencil skirt?

This is from the same company. Too workwear-looking maybe? They do stock XXS & XS so fit-wise would suit you.

A more asymmetric style - I like the button detail at the neckline.

Little diamanté buttons on this style?

The Daisysilk stuff is Chinese-made - but gets very good reviews overall. There are soooo many styles!! I like the first peplum one best - I think the silhouette with your pencil skirt would be beautiful - slightly early 40s. The rest - I think the simpler you go with silk, if it has absolutely no quirky details/sequins/ornate buttons etc, the more likely it is to possibly lean towards workwear? All of these are from there.

Back to some more sequins - quite muted & a jumper style.

You mentioned cashmere/wool - most seems to be very plain & with too little detail to differentiate it from workwear. This, however, in XS, could be a lovely gauzy thing over a fitted cream camisole?
