Need dress for daytime December wedding

I thought this would be easier but I’m panicking a little now. DH’s niece is getting married in a few weeks and almost anything I suggest to him gets a wrinkled nose and “isn’t it a bit too evening-y?” Are velvet/sequins (probably not together) ok for a day wedding with an evening party afterwards? What about satin?

I’m 58 and blonde/fair, a petite 10 on a good day, 12 to be safe and have been generally drawn to pinks and reds in my search though would consider any other colour in that “season” (not white obvs and not black or probably navy). A midi length is probably best and given that the wedding will be in a cold drafty barn I have no interest in baring arms.

Budget up to £300 for a smashing dress though would prefer to spend less if I can get away with it.

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

I like the red one! The tea dress in pink is lovely too, but would it look too summery? Thanks!

A day wedding with an evening party after it is surely just a normal wedding, so your normal rules (whatever they are!) apply? Personally I'd wear velvet for a wedding but usually probably not sequins unless it's pretty small scale.

I generally prefer a print/pattern for wedding wear as it minimises the look of possible spills/crinkles/marks. Not to everyone's taste though, so a few possibilities below, in reds and pinks, as a starter for ten:

Albaray plum velvet and taffeta midi

Kitri ribbon-print maxi

Ted Baker floral puff sleeve midi

Monsoon pink kimono-style midi

M&S

Velvet & Taffeta Midi Bandeau Dress | Albaray | M&S

This velvet and taffeta dress from Albaray is a show-stopping choice for special occasions. It's designed in a regular fit, with a Bardot neckline for a striking off-the-shoulder look. The long sleeves and midi-length hem offer an elegant silhouette.

Look at this product that I found on google.com https://share.google/faeOj8ntKD9Vt7xcR

Thank you - it’s definitely the shape and vibe I’m going for but it’s difficult to tell what kind of red it is - the top looks like a blue-y red which is what I want but the bottom looks a bit more rust iyswim?

I think the lovely Chinoiserie print on the pink makes it less summery looking, also you could accessorise it in a more “wintery” colour from the print

Bigearringsbigsmile · 20/11/2025 22:12

I think it's the same all over. Just order it and see- next are very easy about returns

I saw a couple from there I got really excited about like the crimson embroidered one which looked perfect but it’s sold out! 😣

Not crazy about the plum colour or the shoulders of the Albaray one. The Kitri was a fabulous print but I don’t think maxi would suit me. LOVED the Ted Baker one!

I guess I’m stressing because it’s been so long since I went to a wedding and where I come from (the US) we really don’t get hung up about any difference between day and evening wear (my DH had a giggle 20 years ago that my brothers were wearing dinner jackets - aka tuxedos - to my sister’s 4pm wedding and had to be cajoled into putting one on himself - for the photos). I have often felt his family look down on me a little (maybe that’s my own chip on my shoulder) and I just don’t want to get this wrong. It’s not so much his reaction I’m worried about as SIL’s, and he is sort of a proxy for that. What I mean is if it weren’t a family wedding I would feel much freer to wear what I want.

Thanks to all for your suggestions so far! ❤️

For example, I suggested this to DH and got the nose wrinkle

I don’t see what’s wrong with it - am I missing something?

I really like that OP

I think its perfect for a winter wedding. did your husband say why he didn't like it? my husband never shares much opinion at all

He didn’t say he didn’t like the dress, just that he thought it looked too “evening-y” for a daytime wedding. But thank you for confirming I’m not crazy!

its certainly not too eveningy. the light pink colour stops that. I could see why he would say it if it was navy or osemthign but its perfect for a winter wedding. if its a formal wedding it would look lovely iwth a fascinator.

I love the accessories they have paired it with too - the burgundy I would never think of but it looks beautiful with that dress.

mamagogo1 · 20/11/2025 23:08

The shape the mint velvet dress is fine but I’d opt for a darker colour in December

Rainydayinlondon · 20/11/2025 23:27

The pink velvet dress is perfect OP...really unusual and classy!

And wear maroon shoes too

Mommybunny · 21/11/2025 06:02

The violet butterfly one you linked is gorgeous. I think it’s just too far out of my price range though.

I think I will try the pink velvet MV and the maroon accessories are a great shout. In case they don’t have my size, there are others in a similar shape in different colours and finishes, which you should be able to see at the bottom of the linked page with the pink velvet dress. any particular yay/nay? How about the silver for example?

OP posts:
Mommybunny · 21/11/2025 06:09

And it’s not a formal wedding so the hell I’m dealing with a fascinator. Shoes, bag and earrings are quite enough.
