Anyone know whence this dress came?

Bought many moons ago. The most incredibly flattering fit. Retailer label removed. I want to say it came from Wallis, but can't be sure. Even if I knew, probably no longer sold. Just thought I'd check with Mumsnet before I give up. It's knitted with fitted bodice and looser skirt.

I have a very similar looking one which is a few years old from FatFace

I also have an old one similar in shape from Fat face. But more patterned.

Specifically, from where. Hence, whence.

Absolutely, the 'where' element is intrinsic to the word.

adverb
from what place or source.
"whence do they derive those powers?"
adverb
from which; from where.
"the Ural mountains, whence the ore is procured"
(Oxford)

I was going to suggest Oasis - I have a very similar shaped one from there and the fabric also looks similar, only mine is grey leopard print. I would have bought it around 2009-2010ish!

fireandlightening · 17/11/2025 16:10

I'm loving whence too! I have a dress from Seasalt that is very similar, and also a nice fit.

Also here for the use of the word whence 👌

Me too Smile

Sorry I can't help with the dress.

BlueBarnOwl · 17/11/2025 16:11

We need to start a clothing brand called Whence.

Robotcustard · 17/11/2025 16:13

Had one exactly like this but in grey from Oasis

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
Maybe Kate Bush knows? 🤔

Or ye olde TV shows where they tell the condemned they will "be taken from whence you came and hanged from the neck until dead"

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 17/11/2025 16:21

A happy sigh for the sentence construction, which seems more robust than the garment in question if I may say.

Schoolstressed · 17/11/2025 16:23

I think possibly Fat Face.

MinglyMadly · 17/11/2025 16:33

BlueBarnOwl · 17/11/2025 15:31

No. Whence means from.

Thank you I've learnt something today.

AI tells me - "whence" is the technically correct choice, "from whence" is an old, established idiom used by many famous writers and is still commonly used, especially for a formal or literary effect. "

I'm not a famous writer!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 17/11/2025 16:47

"Whence" is an archaic or formal adverb meaning "from where" or "from what place, source, or origin".
Going to get the word whence into convo tomorrow... should be fun. I work with Americans and they all think English people are mad....

user836367392 · 17/11/2025 16:56

We need a Ye Olde English thread, Christmas themed.

Gatekeeper · 17/11/2025 18:14

Naval officer : "From whence ye came?"
