How old is too old...

... for short skirts? I'm 46 and over the last year I've lost almost 7 stone. For the first time in my life, I "have the legs" for shorter skirts, but I worry that I've missed the boat as far as that goes now. I'm not especially young-looking because I'm growing out some ill-advised permanent hair colour at the moment and have a lot of grey roots! Does grey hair go with minis, even if the legs are sort of ok?

You lot are hysterical and total enablers! This is how Mumsnet used to be, bigging up one another and if you couldn’t do that, you just said nothing. Thank you all but I am not buying the shorts, they are fabulous though 😂

Chewbecca · 01/11/2025 15:49

You are definitely not too old.

I would like to wear a short straight skirt (maybe pleather), roll neck jumper (maybe chunky, maybe fine), thick tights (maybe cable?) and Chelsea boots.

travailtotravel · 01/11/2025 15:57

52, 5 stone off. The legs are out..you are not too old. I have like 20 years plus of hiding to make up for. Join me!

I want the sequin shorts but they're outside stock in every size... is that due to this thread?! 😁

I love them and would wear them on a night out. Fur coat, tights, boots. We’re only here once, give the world some sparkle!

I've just bought this dress from M&S Nobody's Child! Obviously I won't wear it with red tights and ankle boots like in the picture, as I'm not a little elf - that was just what I had on at the time. I think with a ribbed top underneath, opaque tights and longer boots, this will work?

@ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop ,you need a hat, red tights and pixie boots.

Delatron · 05/11/2025 15:30

I think with tights and flat boots with short skirts at any age are fine.

I tend to wear shorts mainly on holiday as my legs at 49 aren’t quite what they were if you look closely. So wouldn’t wander around the local town in shorts or a tiny skirt in summer. I know some people can have perfectly tight and smooth skin at 50 on their legs be let’s be honest - it’s rare. And I am slim, weight train and run so it’s not lack of exercise. Probably sun damage though too…

I think many people start to get a few wrinkles above the knee etc. but tights in winter are fine.

QueenMummyTheFirst · 05/11/2025 16:32

I love the dress OP, and think the outfit looks great as it is (i can't make out the red of the tights, but if it's noticable then maybe swap them for black!). Equally it would look good with a top underneath, but I don't think you need it, other than for warmth in the winter.

But why should you stop wearing short things because of wrinkles!?

Pickledpoppetpickle · 05/11/2025 17:27

OP I am on a weightless journey. Gone from.size 32 to 26 so still some way to go. However I am out of boring black trousers and into bright colours, dresses and skirts snd am loving it. The psychological effect a few stone has had is massive. I feel great and there is no way on earth I wouldn't wear something I like now. Just do it. Dress for you.

Exactly!

Short skirts and grey hair you say?

Here's me at 52 at the Norwegian border with Russia last week.

BeatleHorn · 05/11/2025 21:10

I actually think you need to go shorter with that dress @ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop, opaque tights and some chunkier boots that don't gape at the top, thin knit polo underneath and you're golden.

Well bloody done on the weight loss btw.

I'm not mad keen on knee high boots with short skirts, it only works with very specific boots and skirts, I think a chunky ankle with elasticated panels or laces so it hugs the ankle is better generally and flat knee high boots only work if you're very long and skinny of leg, and even then, it's all about very specific proportions in an outfit.

Interesting question. I’m 46. I’ve noticed randomly the other day when confronting my winter wardrobe that I stopped wearing short skirts about a year ago. Wondered why. I am thin and have OK legs about which I’ve never been self-conscious, but they’re quite short and I don’t see them as a good feature. Basically I feel too old.

BeatleHorn · 06/11/2025 00:59

52, short skirt

46!! Too old? That’s so sad. I’m wearing more minis than I ever have in mid 40s.
