are velvet trousers too old fashioned?
I’ve got a Christmas drinks party early December. Don’t fancy a dress as they always feel a bit frumpy and overdressed.

so I’m wondering about velvet trousers?
Where to start looking?
some on Boden but not great reviews about sizing. Me+Em all look very long.
size 14/16 depending on brand. Up to around £300 for the full outfit.

NRBY
i have 2 pairs, they’re lovely

TomatoSandwiches · 28/10/2025 21:41

No, never.

MineisanAperol · 28/10/2025 22:08

Why never? What can I wear instead? Dark blue or black jeans?

Silverbirchleaf · 28/10/2025 22:10

I gave a pair of wide leg velvet trousers and plan to wear them.

MineisanAperol · 28/10/2025 22:11

Had never heard of NRBY so thank you for that . They are quite cropped. Is cropped good? (if velvet is acceptable)

Luxury fabrics like velvet - yes please! I saw some pleated satin wide-leg trousers today that I was quite tempted by. But I'm not keen on cropped because I think they make you look shorter.

MineisanAperol · 28/10/2025 22:17

@LaurieFairyCakeignore my previous comment. I’ve now found lots of velvet trousers In different styles on the NRBY website. How do you find their sizing?

I have a pair of wide legged ones from M&S last year. They are lovely to wear.

AncientBallerina · 28/10/2025 22:28

Velvet is a classic Christmas fabric. I will be wearing black velvet suit with a champagne shirt!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/10/2025 22:29

Love mine - fat face midnight blue, boden black, both wide leg and full length.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/10/2025 22:29

I have a pair of lovely black velvet wide legged trousers from White Company and they are perfect during the festive season.

Arlanymor · 28/10/2025 22:33

Yay and Boden do a really nice combo with a jacket (you have to buy separately) at the moment: https://www.boden.com/products/stamford-velvet-blazer-plum-jam

There's discounts on and if you sign up to the newsletter I think there's 25% off at the moment - although not sure if you can use it with the existing discount.

Enjoy your drinks!

Stamford Velvet Blazer-Plum Jam

We pride ourselves on our classic British tailoring, and the Stamford velvet blazer is no exception. The slick structure has subtle stretch, ensuring the perfect fit on everyone. Pair with the matching trousers for the full tuxedo.

I got some in Next last year so they may have them again.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/10/2025 08:44

Sizing is true to size for me, the size 1 is an 8, size 2 a 10. I’m short so the cropped look great on me, I’ve just bought the wider leg too and had them shortened. Also look great.

I love velvet in autumn/winter as it’s nice and warm and very lux. I just bought a second hand velvet whistles jumpsuit from eBay - looks amazing in a dark green on me.

MineisanAperol · 29/10/2025 08:45

Thank you. Off to browse the websites.

the problem is that they’re nearly all cheap shiny velour - decent cotton velvet is hard to come by!!

FrostAtMidnight · 29/10/2025 08:51

I would recommend Me and Em- lovely trousers and you can have them shortened very cheaply if necessary. Only word of caution is that velvet can be hot - at least with a jacket you can take it off but not trousers!

Definitely yay! Velvet trousers are perfect for Christmas parties — stylish but comfy. Go for black or burgundy. Boden’s sizing can be tricky, Me+Em runs long. Reiss, Hobbs, or even IsuFashion have nice options. Pair with a silk blouse and heels — classy and easy.

MineisanAperol · 29/10/2025 12:31

@isufashionthat’s exactly the look I’m after!
Will be back to look for silk blouses after I find the trousers

Pure Collection do lovely velvet jeans as do House of Bruar.

FinallyHere · 29/10/2025 12:37

Really good quality ones from House of Bruar. Brilliant.

can dress down with cashmere up with a loose silk blouse open quite low. Or deep v neck worn back to front with long necklace in the v.

Tootyfilou · 29/10/2025 13:10

Poetry do beautiful velvet trousers.

EvelynBeatrice · 29/10/2025 13:15

What’s house of bruar sizing like?

The Pure Collection jeans are both quite high waisted and skinny rather than wider leg or tailored so won’t suit everyone.

FinallyHere · 29/10/2025 13:32

House of Bruar sizing usually spot on for me although at 5’3” I always expect things to need to be taken up.

They are also very good about returns for on line orders so I initially ordered one in each size and made sure to return them and score the credit before I had to pay the credit card bill.

CharlotteCChapel · 29/10/2025 14:20

I have a pairs of black velvet trousers, all different cuts.
