What is your day to day winter coat?

Help me find one! I’ve worn my trusty Trespass long puffer with fluffy hood for three years now which does the job but I’d like something a bit nicer. Ideally with a hood and black.

I’m 37, 5’5 and a size 8/10.

Help a girl out please!

Seasalt Plant Hunter parka

Comefromaway · 27/10/2025 07:40

Barbour long belted puffa

KateMiskin · 27/10/2025 07:40

Alternating between a Jigsaw wool coat ( charity shop) and my Seasalt Janelle if it rains. The latter is much hated on here but it suits me.

FourFiveEightNine · 27/10/2025 07:42

But nothing in black, with a hood is likely to be noticeably nice. Why not widen your search?

Britpopbaby · 27/10/2025 09:32

Rainy days/ snow then it will be a Didrikson that’s waterproof and warm -charity shop buy

Dry and cold - All Saints Sidney coat (charity shop buy) or 100% wool coat (£9.99) charity shop.

I have a bit of a thing for coats.

Mumblechum0 · 27/10/2025 11:08

I have at least 30 coats.
usually wear tailored wool coats in jewel colours or cream, varying lengths.
For muddy walks either navy long puffer if not too cold or a very warm M and s coat in waxed cotton khaki with a very snuggly hood.

do you want one coat to do everything? I’d buy a few for various occasions

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/10/2025 11:21

I don’t have a day-to-day coat. I switch coats depending on what I’m wearing, how I’m feeling, where I’m going and what the weather is like. Are we just supposed to have one coat??

toadstool32 · 27/10/2025 11:25

@Mumblechum0@HundredMilesAnHourwwell done to you both for affording multiple coats. Yep, I have just the one.

No need to be snippy @toadstool32 🙄 I’m 55. I’ve had some of my coats for 30+ years. I work with people younger than some of my coats. 😂

If you only have/want one coat, it will help if you explain a little about your lifestyle/activities so people can suggest something suitable. For example, I’m originally Northern but live and work in London now. What works in London as a coat would be far from suitable for a coat where I grew up (unless you like being wet and cold).

KateMiskin · 27/10/2025 11:47

If you only want one coat, I recommend LandsEnd. Not trendy but very good quality and last forever. They also have huge sales.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/10/2025 11:50

I don't have a full length coat just bum length parkas, Phase Eight and a Whistles one both with faux fur trim.

Crojo · 27/10/2025 11:54

I like Joules coats, they have several smart black ones available in different styles. They are warm and good quality, definitely showerproof, however not sure how well they would hold up in proper torrential rain if you’re looking for something outdoorsy/completely waterproof.
Next coats are also usually pretty good.

Seasalt Plant Hunter parka

Snap. I like mine as it's actually waterproof and warm but doesn't look too "technical", like I'm about to go off hiking.

DarlingJo · 27/10/2025 12:00

I followed your thread because I'm also on the lookout for something a bit nicer than my current very unflattering rain coat, but so far all the suggestions have been beyond what I would be paying (or not to my taste).

Regatta have some nice looking coats that I'm going to see if I can try on at a Go Outdoors. I've got a 20% voucher to use which they seem to send out just for breathing.

JosephineBoneApart · 27/10/2025 12:07

What do you want to do in the coat? Do you walk, drive or use public transport? Do you have kids and go to the park etc? or do you want something for more town wear?

Wool is great but not so good if it's pouring with rain.

Ideally you need two coats; maybe one is a down coat for when it's freezing cold and wet, and another that is wool and smarter.

My DD who is about your age has a couple of down parka styles and a smarter knee length coat in wool.

If you can stretch to a wool coat it can last for years if it's good quality. I've had one for over 15 years and it's still looking good.

ForTipsyFinch · 27/10/2025 12:26

Mine is much like your current coat, and I have a black oversize wool one I like when it’s dry. I have around 25 coats but I don’t wear the others enough.

Why? Harts of Stur are a reputable seller.

1415isgreat · 27/10/2025 13:10

Canada Goose Mystique Parka. I love mine but it can feel quite heavy

Curryingfavour · 27/10/2025 19:33

I have winter weight coats that I’ve had for years
I tend to go for a dark green non bulky quilted coat with a hood ,was £45 in an outlet sale and have had it since 2007 🤣
I also have a parka in a gorgeous warm red/ orange colour which would be my 2nd choice ( had that since 2016 )

Hedgesgalore · 27/10/2025 19:37

Seasalt Plant hunter, so good I have two in different colours.

PerkyCyanPoet · 27/10/2025 19:41

Sorry I’m not sure of your budget but this Uniqlo one is my every day coat, it’s so warm and dry! It’s not particularly exciting though.

I also like this one although it might not be as cosy.
