Looking for alt options for keeping warm this winter while also looking reasonably stylish?

Actually considering a gilet/oversized coat combo as I'm always freezing!

Any suggestions welcome...

I have a lovely tweed shooting jacket with a waterproof lining, made in the UK and beautifully warm. I wouldn’t want to wear it in a proper downpour, but it spends a lot of time on drizzly cold hockey and football pitch sidelines and is properly warm.

Well wool seems like the obvious answer but depends on what your budget is.

Karen Millen have some lovely ones at the moment in the sale. I have a camel coloured one and wear it with everything!

Can I ask where it's from?

Thank you. I have a thick wool coat but I just don't feel it insulates as well as a puffer. Maybe I need to layer up.

Have always felt the cold and never found anything that works as well as a puffer. Fine for most occasions but not smart events.

Look at lemieux. The do a long winter riding coat that is a bit like a waterproof puffer but more shaped. They are weatherproof for wet UK winters.

OverNotOver · 21/10/2025 10:44

A gilet does really help, I once read that when you see news reporters on scene in winter wearing a smart wool coat they have a thin gilet underneath!

Are you still cold once inside? Because honestly a thermal vest would make a huge difference, just not so easy to remove…

jay55 · 21/10/2025 10:47

Would you be better off upping your thermals game rather than relying on the coat?

MoveAlongNowDear · 21/10/2025 10:49

I wear a uniqlo thin puffer gilet under my wool coat. It's v warm and stylish. Did you watch 'Succession',that's what all the wealthy wore under their coats. Probably not uniqlo though.

Lotusflow · 21/10/2025 10:56

Long shearling (real shearling) coats, such as Joseph.

Thank you. Interesting re news reporters!

Oh yes I am well versed in thermals as well 😄Waiting to see a thyroid specialist because this level of feeling cold clearly isn't normal. Need some options in the meantime.

I wear Uniqlo thermals 8 months of the year. 😄I definitely have something else going on that I'm waiting for doctor to come back to me on.

Didn't spot that on Succession! And didn't realise Uniqlo did those kinds of gilets. Will check them out.

Can I ask where it's from?

It’s from New Forest Clothing (via Vinted) 😁I have raynauds and am not a fan of the cold, and I live in this thing in winter. It’s got inner cuffs to keep the wind and rain out, handwarmer pockets, and best of all I get to pretend I’m a sort of scruffy aristocratic helena bonham carter/nancy mitford mashup 💅

It sounds brilliant, glad it's been helpful for you. And the Helena/Nancy mashup is the cherry on top!

I have this! And whilst it looks amazing and I get lots of compliments, I can confirm it is not warm in the slightest! It doesn't actually have a gilet inside, just gives the illusion of one with the double zip. Also, it's rain proof but not downpour proof as I found out yesterday.

Happyhappyday · 21/10/2025 23:37

I have an Arcteryx patera parka which has a smooth totally waterproof outside and down inside. I also get super cold. I am still cold in this but short of an ankle length Fjallraven expedition parka, it’s the warmest out there.

nothing wool is going to work for you if you really feel the cold (speaking as someone who does too and has spent 15 years buying for the outdoor apparel industry).

coxesorangepippin · 21/10/2025 23:37

Probably is with UK weather the damp always gets through

Magpie50 · 22/10/2025 00:52

I think I like your original idea of layering, OP.
I sometimes wear a denim jacket under a bigger coat.....no reason you can't layer 2 thicker coats though (just watch the overall volume!).

Not necessarily the height of current fashion but I had a big fluffy teddy coat a few years ago and it was really warm! I think thick pile traps warm air and keeps you warm. I've noticed there are some around this winter too so probably making a comeback. They look a bit more glamorous than a puffer for different occasions. Also faux fur does similar.

Autumngirl312 · 22/10/2025 14:21

I have a Peter Storm 'Luna' Parka coat. I've had it for 3 winters now and still going strong, although it's huge on me. It's very snug, warm, windproof and heavy showerproof!

FrauPaige · 22/10/2025 17:53

I have a few wool coats and it's definitely a case of not all being created equally. My 70%+ wool blend coats with liners perform nearly as well as a technical coat like a parka/puffer, while being more flattering. The 20% wool blend coats are not so warm. Length is key, as it fit, I find.
