Looking for alt options for keeping warm this winter while also looking reasonably stylish?

Actually considering a gilet/oversized coat combo as I'm always freezing!

Any suggestions welcome...

For thermals, silk (Patra) or merino wool (Dilling), not thermal polyester.
Coat.....MaxMara? Second hand are often cheaper than new, lower quality coats.

My warmest coat is a parka, Canadian made (not Canada goose) and too warm for the uk really, comes out only once it drops below freezing. My wool coat is perfect for the 0-10 range and I wear a light jacket above that if needed

Depends what 'stylish' means to you. I've got this coat, £125 from Ebay. The fabric's not the best - it's that slightly stiff & scratchy (felted?) wool - but it is 75% wool and 5% cashmere. I was very keen on a coat that covers my legs, as I don't care how well padded my torso is if my shins are frozen! This is very long.

It's also big and swishy, meaning it traps heat inside and is pleasantly toasty with winter clothing underneath. The hood actually covers your head, it's not just a baggy collar. It's rain resistant, being wool, and I spray mine for better waterproofing. Have worn it every winter for six years, get it cleaned in the Spring. Still looks the same.

Would you be better off upping your thermals game rather than relying on the coat?

Agree, also a micro fleece (thin but warm).

I don't like bulky jackets so wear a thermal long sleeve, my dress or top, a micro fleece, then my jacket.
I treat the micro fleece as part of the jacket so take it off with the jacket when inside.

I was just coming on to say this! I hate the cold and one of my best ebay buys was an over sized Max Mara wool and cashmere coat. I managed to find a charcoal grey one and a camel one and they are lush. I live in them all winter and the most expensive one was £90. I also have a couple of shearling coats and jackets, all ebay, and a tweed shooting jacket for dog walking mentioned bv a PP. All lovely and warm and all standing the test of time. A clean at the end of winter and they look as good as new.

MaxMara make the best coats, arguably. Although Nicole Farhi are good.
My MaxMara was just over £100, black wool/alpaca, and it's beautiful.
Also have Donegal tweed jacket, £7 on ebay.
I don't have mine cleaned, haven't trusted a dry cleaner since my first really good coat was ruined; I steam and air and steam again, and protect from clothes moths.

I have literally just bought the Le mieux coat mentioned above, it's not really been put through it's paces by me yet but it seems good. No idea what the elastic straps are for inside though as I don't ride horses! Petrol blue is a nice colour

They're to keep the coat on your thighs when you're sat in the saddle.

I’m also awaiting blood test results for being permanently fucking freezing, just to say I didn’t find the Uniqlo heat tech any good at all, I’ve had good success with the M&S extra warm brushed thermals, stretchy, tight fitting and actually do help with the chill but mine (and possibly yours) is more of an internal coldness and I’m not really sure any of it will really help!
My warmest coat I’m afraid is a puffa, it’s the lululemon wonderpuffa, it’s not remotely stylish but being such a cold person I’ve got to tell you, style is far from my mind!

Didriksons? There are many styles on their website, with ratings for warmth and waterproofness

HeartyStork · 24/10/2025 22:23

I got a fabulous Regatta Romine II coat from Sports Direct that goes past my knees, I am only 5ft and a smidge though. And it's the best 37 pound I've ever spent. Although at the minute it says 59.99 online. I deffo only paid £37 and it's SUPER warm and waterproof. I haven't gone anywhere without it since I bought it 3 weeks ago.

Waterproof and warm?
I recently bought a New Forest padded wax Jacket. It's great like Barbour used to be and also has a detachable hood in olive green . 4 pockets and inside pocket.
Really cheap too around £50 and actually properly waterproof have been drenched this week

176509user · 24/10/2025 22:43

We get quite a lot of rain with cold so has always been a challenge to stay warm AND dry.

What has worked best for me was a waterproof long coat from M&S with warm trousers and a thick cosy oversized jumper. Got the coat a size bigger for this reason.

PapardelleFitzgerald · 25/10/2025 14:03

I have a lovely long sheepskin coat that seems to regulate temperature so I'm always warm in winter but never hot. The bonus part is that it cost me £30 on Ebay. I appreciate not everyone would sign up for sheepskin though...

eurochick · 25/10/2025 16:59

A parka seems like the solution. My Didrikson is very warm and completely waterproof.
