Please explain tubing mascara to me

I've seen it written about, but I don't really understand it. It doesn't smudge, but it just wipes off with water?

Also, does it add volume to lashes, or length, or both? And is there one you would recommend?

Do you just apply it like normal mascara?

Thanks!

I've always wondered though... does it ever come off in little tubes or pieces etc, like through the day do you have to watch out for bits of mascara pieces on your face??

WithIcePlease · 17/10/2025 00:24

@wandawaves
Mine never has
If I haven't rinsed it off with enough water, the odd bit will stay on my face with wiping and I have to pick it off. It's not like something that is just absorbed into the towel with a bit of a rub

It’s (makeup) life changing.

Thanks! I feel like I might have to give it a go.
I'm sick of panda eyes when waking up (even though I've removed my mascara as much as possible before bed!), and i find I'm getting a lot of mascara transferring under my eyes in the daytime, especially if I've been smiling a lot, or exercising.

I love the Elf one. I have very oily lids and rub my eyes a lot and it doesn’t come off in bits.

Tubing mascara is the only mascara that doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes. I’d like a master list of all the various versions on tubing mascara. My google-fu is not goo on this. Does anyone know if boots 17 has a tubing mascara? Or is willing to help create a definitive list here?

As a daily dog walking beach rambler, I used to be addicted to Aldi’s Too Legit tubing mascara which is now discontinued. It was so gentle, stayed on through winter North Sea winds and my daily battle with blepharitis, until I showered and then it came off easily. No smudging. No running. I loved the brush/applicator and it was so reasonably priced at £7. I’m still in mourning for it!
I’ve tried several others suggested here but none have come anywhere near the Aldi one. Currently have the Clinique Lash Power and I hate it-I find it really claggy with some of my lashes- and the brush is stumpy-maybe as it’s because the applicator doesn’t have two lengths on the brush like the Aldi one used to have-i don’t know - and it’s hard to get off.
I’ve tried one by ELF - also unimpressed. The nearest I can find to my Aldi fave is Eyeco but it dries up really quickly in the tube.
I’m going to try the No7 one next.
They all stay on well, but I need them to come easily when I shower and elongate well. Preferably under £20. Good luck OP - it’s a minefield out there 😊

I think I must be the only person that doesn't get on with it. Feel like I'm pulling it my eyelashes out to remove it, and find it quite crumbly down my face after a day's wear.
I use eye drops a lot, so I've given up on mascara all together and just go for a bit of eyeliner for definition if I feel like it.

No you're not, I have bought it by mistake a couple of times by mistake and don't like it, so hard to get off compared to normal mascara which is fine for me, no smudging, maybe it's because I wear contact lenses so I avoid touching and rubbing my eyes during the day.

I use lash power by Clinique. I’m a serial eye rubber and it just doesn’t move. I’ve been using it for years. Sometimes I’ll try something different but I always come back to this one. It just comes straight off with cleanser and a face cloth

I used to use tubing mascara during my menopause, as it was the only thing that wouldn’t slide off. Couldn’t find one though that did a decent job of both lengthing and thickening. Now I’m firmly post-menopause I’ve gone back to using any old cheapy thickening mascara. Old age has many unexpected benefits!

LuffyMe · 17/10/2025 20:09

These are ones that I've repeat purchased:
DHC Perfect Pro
Clinique Lash Power (almost identical to the DHC)
Clinique High Impact zero gravity
Clinique Full to Flutter (now discontinued)
Estee Lauder Doublewear Zero smudge

Tried these but wouldn't buy again:
Blinc
Elf
Mac Gigasomething
Kevin Aucoin
Boots No7

I only use Tubing mascara. Hourglass has always been my go to and it’s excellent

Everything0Everywhere · 17/10/2025 20:46

It's great. I wear contacts and have no issues. Normal mascara ends up all over my face but tubing is fabulous.
I currently use Lancome Lash Idole which is about £28 but I have just spotted it at £18 in Boots so I will stock up!
It gives a false lalsh effect for me.

Agree with @LuffyMe that the Elf one is rubbish. Lots of people use it but I found that it clumped my lashes together. It's a shame because I really wanted to find a version less than £15.
Clinque Lash Power is also good and has a more natural look compared to the Lancome version.

Everything0Everywhere · 17/10/2025 20:51

I would also add that in the past I have mistakenly bought the waterproof version of Lash Idole and it DOES NOT COME OFF! Great if that's what you're after but my god, it caused me grief when I was taking my make up off! If you go swimming etc, I'd go for that, otherwise, the normal version is quite sufficient!

Hourglass used to be my favourite until I tried Tarte...in my opinion it's much better
