What top with black velvet trouser suit?

Iamnotalemming · 11/10/2025 16:21

I have a series of black tie related work events this autumn. I've ordered a black velvet trouser suit and am hoping to recycle it for as many of them as possible but am struggling a bit to think about what to wear for a top.

I've ordered a white satin shirt as one classic option but would like another option: would love a burgundy/ wine coloured something, greens also suit me.

I'm 10/12 but stomach not as flat as it used to be - never recovered from large baby - so prefer nothing too clingy or tight around waist.

Any ideas gratefully received!

I feel like a silky cami would work

or a crisp tuxedo style shirt

something metallic or sequinned

Iamnotalemming · 11/10/2025 16:33

Ooo bronze metallic! [goes off to google]

Agree a nice silky forest green cami or blouse would look nice with a black velvet suit. Or a pale yellow.

Sequined camisole. Can you find one with a 'flip' sequin? Bronze and ??? Loads of sequins already in the shops.

Geneticsbunny · 11/10/2025 17:29

I think a faded black band t-shirt would look good but obviously it depends on the event.

What's a flip sequin? Sorry for ignorance!

Love this idea but I couldn't in my industry

Sainsburys have some metallic ribbed long sleeved tops - one in brown I think?
if set on burgundy then look for a similar metallic tee

Soonflower · 11/10/2025 19:37

But maybe you want looser - sorry! I would say Tu is worth a look in general.

A contrasting waistcoat could look good and you could wear it on its own or with a shirt/ T-shirt underneath to change it up.

UnpaintedLily · 11/10/2025 21:16

Velvet is an opportunity to play around with textures so I could spend your money all day with this brief! Silk, definitely - a camisole or a high-necked blouse. I would also want a very, very soft wool vest - something a bit like this.

I think a waistcoat of some sort would look good too - Whistles has a couple that just about qualify as green (pale sage; mint), but they're quite expensive.

I suspect this might be a bit short, judging by the pics, but it would be a bargain basement metallic option if it works for you.

A lacy/mesh blouse would also be a lovely contrast in texture if you could find something suitable. Best I could do in a quick JL search was this.

(Ridiculous price, not a serious suggestion, but you could have a louche burgundy snake print blouse complete with a bow...)

It looks different colours in different lights - flip might not be the correct term, it's called flip paint on a car. My chorus sings with a mixed chorus and their ladies wear a sequinned top that looks brown/bronze in one light and yellow gold in another.

I'm a big fan of velvet. Black velvet can be really ageing if you don't style it right: You might end up looking like you've been shopping from the Damart Christmas lookbook

I would definitely get a vintage man's paisley shirt with a massive collar and a fuchsia or chartreuse shirt with a massive pussy cat bow.

I thought waistcoat.

Iamnotalemming · 12/10/2025 18:31

Waistcoat is an interesting idea!
I am amused but slightly concerned about looking like a Christmas look book 😬

I'd say don't wear white with black. You may look like a waitress.

Iamnotalemming · 12/10/2025 21:29

Hmm the waitress look is best avoided. Particularly in case I am mistaken for one in my male heavy industry.

I've ordered (in addition to the white satin shirt which I am now concerned is a bit waitressy) a red wine satin sleeveless, high necked number, and also the long sleeved forest green satin number someone mentioned upthread.
If I can manage it, I'll come back with photos later once I've tried it all on.

Goddammit that's fabulous. I might have to order that one as well.
