Help me find a new watch? £250 budget

I could go a bit over. I know for some of you that will be a tiny amount but my watches are normally about £30 so this is an expensive watch for me!

I want something discreet, classic and with numbers. Prefer silver. No sparkle or huge branding. I quite like trench watches with retro numbering.

I like my Citizen Eco Drive, solar powered so now batteries to worry about, and it looks sleek and seems practically indestructible.

Tissot ladies watches can be understated.

I bought DW one a few years ago plain silver no bling.
Cost about £250 ,£280.

Do you mean the original trench watch, with a hinged cover, or a no-nonsense 'military' style with Arabic numbers and a sturdy case?

If the latter, you have lots of options as most manufacturers do at least one in both large and smaller sizes. If the former, you're on a bit of a unicorn hunt.

Sorry, the picture didn't link. It's shock and deep water resistant and self-winding.

Glad you started this thread, I'm looking for similar. The closest I've seen is Sternglas watches, inspired by Bauhaus.
I want numbers rather than Roman numerals.

I have a classic Tissot watch that I'm very happy with - had it about three years now, worn regularly and it has kept its condition really well. Lots of choice with Tissot in the £200 - £300 price range. I bought mine from Beaverbrooks and they were really helpful - sitting you down, offering drinks etc. and bringing different watches to try.

I had one like this and loved it but it didnt work and was uneconomical to repair. It was quite dainty but solid at the same time.

I like Mondaine - clear unfussy style and easy to read https://uk.mondaine.com/collections/classic

I was wondering about them. I camt find anywhere local that stocks them.

I quite like those. They look quite big though? I'd prefer numbers but I could do roman numerals. But, fun fact... 4 in Roman numerals is IV but on watches it's always IIII. Something to do with it being confusing to have IV, V and VI.

Timex do watches like that if you wanted.
I've got a Timex with a face you can illuminate, very useful for holidays.

I've just treated myself to a beautiful stainless steel Mondaine watch. They do 10% discounts for signing up and often email out boosted 20% off offers too.

Have never come across anyone else wearing one

Good choice! I have had my Mondaine watch for at least a decade and am still very happy with it and I love the clean and simple design. I had to replace the leather strap several times (puppy chewing...) and had it cleaned and serviced once so far, I think.

Caterpillargirl23 · 11/10/2025 15:12

@blanketsnuggler that looks lovely, it might be on my Christmas list.
@Mygardenandme I've never been keen on Roman numerals, they seem ungainly to me and you've added weight to my preference with the fun fact-4, 5 and 6 are distinct and elegant looking numbers and can be written with one pen movement compared with IV, V and VI. Imagine your OTP text in RN.

Mumwithbaggage · 11/10/2025 15:27

I believe the IIII on watches is to balance out the VIII for 8 and create aesthetic symmetry. Well that's what someone told me.

I don't need a new watch but there are some lovely ones on here. I love watches!

HewasH2O · 11/10/2025 16:00

Undoubtedly Mondaine. John Lewis stocks them.

Mygardenandme · 11/10/2025 16:36

I quite like this Mondaine. I wish it had numbers though. 🤣

Are the straps easy to replace? My current watch apparently isn't a standard size and needs the proprietary straps which are expensive and hard to find. The strap is falling apart and the face is all scratched up now anyway.

That's interesting. I find the IIII more jarring though. 🤣

I have a men's one with a red strap. We have a stockist fairly locally, but I've only needed it replaced once. They said it's easy to do via Mondaine too.
