Yes to this barn jacket or not?

I’ve bought this jacket and not sure whether to keep. Thoughts on whether it will look dated in a couple of years, they seem very in fashion at the moment. DH likes it, DM says she’s note sure. It was marked down for a few days, so bought for the lower price.

It's a beautiful jacket, I prefer it to Barbour's, the cut is more versatile and feminine.
No need to have a barn for that.

Placestogo · 06/10/2025 09:21

I was going to comment on the timeless cut but i can see PP have done already.
i am not sure about the chocolate colour, i guess it depends on your skin tone and hair colour/style.

i do wonder if the chocolate colour might look outdated in a few years time though? I have not seen that colour for a lomg time and this year there is a lot of it, which makes me think it is a trend rather than a less faddy/more timeless colour

CharlieKirkRIP · 06/10/2025 09:29

I don’t like the sleeves on it.

Pastelpoppy · 06/10/2025 10:16

Thanks all. I’m not too worried about the brown colour, I wear browns a lot especially in the transition seasons, even when it’s not the on trend colour.
PP asked if it was warm and I’d say it’s not massively warm and needs layering. It works well with a nice knit jumper, fine for the current climate but obviously not for the winter months.

It looks nice so wear it.

A few years back when Barbours were trendy I bought a navy blue one but I had to buy a separate faux fur gilet to wear under it, which the green jacket didn't have or need. I ditched it years ago, probably would be too big for it now.

Mexicantortilla · 06/10/2025 20:13

There’s many nicer looking ones if you look at Schoffel or Deerhunter even Ridgeline, I have to say that one from Hobbs is giving 1970s shoots and old range rovers, doesn’t look a good fit with space for wind and rain to get up the sleeves!

LooseCanyon · 07/10/2025 12:14

Why on earth would you ask your DH and DM for fashion advice?!

If you like it, buy it. If it fits a hole in your wardrobe (IYSWIM), buy it. Don't start a home committee, all of whom will have differing views, on it!

They're not the same. OP presumably doesn't want a £700 shooting jacket.

Aluna · 07/10/2025 15:56

I mean it’s just a Barbour copy. What has fashion got to do with it?

GoodQueenBess · 07/10/2025 16:01

It's not a Barbour copy. @Aluna . Barn jackets are currently on trend.

allmymonkeys · 07/10/2025 16:06

It looks like a perfectly good, practical jacket and if it's sturdily made and you like it then keep it.

I think asking it to be fashionable is a bit hard on it. How exciting and original can a coat like this be?

Aluna · 07/10/2025 16:08

And what do you think a barn jacket is? They’re basically variations on a Barbour theme.

GoodQueenBess · 07/10/2025 17:16

@Aluna , a typical Barbour is waxed, a barn jacket isn't, although some might be. OP's isn't.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/10/2025 17:49

I like the style a lot and think it's a) timeless and b) a very useful addition to spring/autumn wardrobes, if you haven't got anything like it already.

Personally, I'd prefer grey or khaki, but if you like the brown and can afford it, then I say go for it.

Aluna · 07/10/2025 18:11

Barbour do plenty of non waxed jackets.

Pastelpoppy · 07/10/2025 20:15

@Mexicantortilla thanks for the suggestions but these jackets aren’t really me or what I was looking for. I’m not really going to be wearing it for hiking or outdoor activities, just a jacket that looks nice for going out and about in the autumn and spring months, so it doesn’t need to be too hard wearing.
I understand the style is a bit too wannabe country living for some which is fair but I’m ok with it.

@Pastelpoppy , the jacket looks great. It looks smarter than a barn jacket.

Pinkfreedom · 07/10/2025 21:11

For those with a much smaller budget Sainsbury's have a similar style in a couple of colours.

I am way past being a follower of fashion for myself but do like looking at new trends and seeing what those with larger budgets buy (I'm just nosey).

I used to be very goth but find the dark colours no longer suit me. I wear lots of florals now, like a Victorian hippy lol
