Yes to this barn jacket or not?

I’ve bought this jacket and not sure whether to keep. Thoughts on whether it will look dated in a couple of years, they seem very in fashion at the moment. DH likes it, DM says she’s note sure. It was marked down for a few days, so bought for the lower price.

A barn jacket is currently trendy, yes. A year or two ago, would we have been calling something a "barn jacket" let alone wanting one?
But, I do think this is more wearable, and more durable, than the khaki ones with the different colored cord collar, as it is all the same color. (Chocolate brown is also a trendy color, but it is neutral enough that you won't look obviously dated in a year or two, unlike say, this summer's butter yellow).
What makes it longer-lasting is that it looks, really, like a classic Barbour jacket. This raises the question of why not get a classic Barbour, which would always be classic? For me, I don't like the feel of a waxed jacket (maybe experienced too many always slightly damp Barbours that smelt of dog during my childhood), plus I love chocolate brown, so I would go for this one.

Long story short, I like it. I think you should keep it.

PlanetSaturn · 01/10/2025 16:40

I agree that being all one colour will make it a bit more timeless. Yeah, keep it!

Britpopbaby · 01/10/2025 20:58

I think for that money you could get a Barbour jacket which I would consider a barn jacket.

OopsieeDaisy · 01/10/2025 22:23

I really like it and if you do, you should keep it!

Pastelpoppy · 01/10/2025 22:25

Thanks for the responses 🙂I think I’m going to keep it. I bought it because I love the colour and I think I’m going to find it useful. I haven’t really gravitated to the Barbour jackets, this one just caught my eye. I agree Barbour is a better investment but I think this one is more me thinking about it.

It looks like a coat you should get years of wear out of because it isn't too 'barn jacket'.
I'll be in my Barbour but I'm from the countryside.

RafaFan · 04/10/2025 12:59

I have an Aigle coat I got 25 years ago that's still doing duty as my barn jacket. I'm not sure that one from Hobbs will be equal to the challenge of mucking out cows and chickens to be honest.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/10/2025 14:05

For that money, I’d rather buy a Barbour/Aigle etc and expect it to last decades. If i wanted something cheap n cheerful to ride the current trend for barn jackrts, i’d look at FatFace.

That FatFace jacket isn't in the same league as OP's jacket.
For that sort of money, I'd get a Barbour in a sale, or look for a pre-loved one.

FatFace is fine but it's not a Barbour.

birling16 · 04/10/2025 15:18

Are you going to be hanging out in barns?

That’s exactly what i was saying.

Pastelpoppy · 04/10/2025 20:11

I have to admit I really have no reason to be wearing a ‘barn jacket’ I won’t be going near any barns or mucking out any animals, it’s purely just I liked the look of it!
The Fat face one looks like a decent jacket at a better price but I prefer the style of the Hobbs one, at least I got it for 15% off. I’ve already worn, so I’m going to be keeping it now!

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads , it's not particularly cheap. It's probably decent enough quality.

Ruthietuthie · 04/10/2025 20:17

I am glad that you are enjoying it, @Pastelpoppy, it's a lovely jacket in a really rich color. You will get lots of wear from it, I am sure.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/10/2025 20:25

Am I the only one only one who’s never heard of a ‘barn jacket’?

And what is it? The sort of greenish or brownish thing which you wouldn’t mind getting mud/horse poo on?
I’d thought that was a Barbour…

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 04/10/2025 20:27

When is one wearing a barn jacket if not in a barn?

GoodQueenBess · 04/10/2025 20:38

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast , it's a type of jacket. You can wear it where you like.
Do you only wear a trench coat in a trench?

Edited

I don’t own a trench coat but I’m guessing the history of trench coats do borrow their design from a military style coat. Barn coat on the other hand - a farming style jacket?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/10/2025 20:54

Yeah, it will do you until death 👍, timeless

Followthesunshine · 04/10/2025 21:02

It's gorgeous, I think the way it is styled is timeless

LadyRoughDiamond · 05/10/2025 20:33

I have a barn jacket and didn’t even realise it! I’ll be digging out my old dog walking jacket (complete with ancient biscuits in the pocket) and giving it a brush down to look trendy on tomorrow’s school run.

CinnamonCinnabar · 05/10/2025 20:36

I like the style - is it warm and properly waterproof would be my key questions.

LunaTheCat · 06/10/2025 02:38

It’s lovely .. you will get heaps wear from it.

abracadabra1980 · 06/10/2025 03:05

I love it - in fact I love the whole look of it on the model with the skirt, socks and loafers. Why would you need to be shovelling shit in a barn to enjoy it?!

PaddlingSwan · 06/10/2025 08:23

I do not have a barn, but can offer an ancient chicken shed. However, I wear my trusty Barbour, bought in 1986, so long-lasting.
I think that cut is classic and will not date, so well done on getting it at a lower price!
My only reservation would be the colour, but if it coordinates with your wardrobe, why not?
