Your fave black barrel leg trousers?

I'm after a pair and don't know where to start. I have a black tapered linen pair that are sort of that shape, but I'd like something a bit heavier for winter. I also have Lucy & Yak Billie cords but they're not quite what I'm after. Ideally I'd like something in a slightly smarter fabric (not sure what that would be!) with a semi-elasticated waist...does anyone have any specific recommendations, and/or links? Thank you!

I hope you like them @thedogdaysareover51 - I keep looking to see if they do them in different colours. I fancy a charcoal and burgundy!

Pebble40 · 22/09/2025 18:54

I’ve got the cotton ones in medium, same size after washing, no shrinkage!

These ones! I love them so much I have 2 pairs. Size down!

I absolutely love these too !

asking for a friend hoe many pairs of barell trousers would to too many ?
it’s almost pay day and I am itching to click on some of these !

out of interest are those of us embracing this style of a particular body type or do they actually suit everyone ?
I am a pear and struggle with trousers a lot these really do work for me .

I'm a 12-14, @MavisBarrel, and about 5ft7ish, and I just bloody love a man-repelling trouser 😁

I love the Lucy & Yak Billie cords for winter and similar shaped linen trousers (my favourite are M&S) for summer, so that tapered style is definitely on I like. I always think of a line from a Discworld novel about how trousers like that make the wearer look like they have a rabbit in each pocket, which I love (although STP was referring more to plus-fours I think!)

Also I appreciate that they all pretty much always have good pockets (rabbit or no).

Ah makes sense maybe we are just fans of a certain aesthetic- I am similar size but less tall.

I’m a definite apple (thanks PCOS + peri) and find them super-flattering too.

Just reporting back on the Beyond Nine Mabel - they're nice but the M are blinking enormous! They seem pretty good quality, and the shape is nice, but whether they're worth £70-odd I don't know.

I actually called in at Next today and happened upon some nice black cropped, trousers with a wide-leg, slightly barrel shape.- they were only £13 so I got them and might see if they do the job!

I bought some from Beyond Nine last year and they were like giant clown pants - my DP had some "hilarious quips" about them, and then they went straight back. I'm usually a 12 bottom, 10/12 top and think I got M too (whatever size it was, I followed the size guide, maybe S actually).

I see so many influencers being gifted stuff from them it puts me off when the clothes are so £.

Belmondo · 19/10/2025 22:37

Bonsoir fellow barrel-hunters 👍

Just nipping in to say a) I LOVE the sale trousers I got from Next, referenced above and b) I tried on both the Jersey Barrel Leg and the Curve Corduroy in Uniqlo yesterday and was not very impressed...

The jersey ones were not what I was expecting fabric-wise but that wasn't a big problem - I'd say more of a sort of slightly stretchy cotton twill than a jersey (nothing like the Beyond Nine ones) and sooo much longer than I wanted them to be, and I'm 5ft7 and a bit. For ref, the L were about the right size for me (12-14) but they're definitely the kind of cut where the waist is a fair bit smaller than the hips.

The corduroy curve ones were quite nice but again the fit wasn't what I wanted and the fabric was nowhere near as nice as Lucy & Yak Billies, which also have an elasticated waist and (I think) a much nicer cut. The rust colour was lovely though.

As an aside, the branch I was in was literally the busiest shop I've been in for years (and I once memorably worked the Harrods sale for a day 🤣) and there were two other mid thirties to mid forties women dithering over the Jersey barrel legs...we'd all clearly been influenced and I have to say that did put me off a bit! We did have a nice chat though.

So all in all, I'm still open to more suggestions - the Next ones are going to get a lot of wear (and I like that they're a mid-weight almost brushed chino-style cotton so good for winter and summer) but I wouldn't mind something a bit softer/more tracksuity in either navy or charcoal.

That’s a shame the Uniqlo ones didn’t work for you. I love mine-I’m 5ft 7 too but they sit on my ankle so weird that yours are too long. I’ve seen people turn them up but you might not fancy that.
The Marks barrel leg trousers linked before are a hit for me. I’ve worn them lots since buying them. Open to more suggestions too!

MavisBarrel · 20/10/2025 14:06

Ahh I am so happy this thread is alive again - shame the Uniqlos weren’t for you but hopefully that means you will get some more suggestions now @Belmondo!
i am on the lookout for some more casual ones for WFH - the closest seem to be the Busby and Fox ones or the manners London ones posted by @DoubtfulCat but the £££ makes me nervous in both cases - I would need them to be amazing .
The model on manners London is so unlike me it’s hard to visualise without trying them but I love the description!

Belmondo · 20/10/2025 18:18

Haha @MavisBarrel I feel like this thread is integral to your wellbeing 🤣

I might order those M&S ones, although they look a bit more tailored/formalish than I was after.

I'm a bit stuck for trousers this autumn/winter tbh - apart from my cords and a pair of wide-leg Fat Face jeans that I still love,

I ended up buying these ones as they were in the sale and I'mveey happy with them, they'resuper comfortable. I'm 5'7 and they're a perfect length on me. I got the Large and i'm a size 12.

Belmondo · 20/10/2025 22:25

I didn't see those @Diggetydawg, but based on the fit of the other two styles I'm not convinced they're for me - glad you've found a bargain though! I feel like that about my Next ones, which I've worn pretty much every day since buying 🤣

They look like the most ugly horrible unflattering things ever. Why do folk jump on these bandwagons. Maybe there are nice ones but most of the photos I've seen are very unflattering even on attractive models.,

I feel the same about skinnies.
Horses for courses. I’m stocking up on barrel/ballon legs whilst i can.

I’ve not had skinny jeans since we moved to this house in 2015, and got the Whistles barrel jeans in 2019 (I know this as my phone served me “on this day” yesterday!) as a gateway. I saw a person on TikTok doing a try on with Uniqlo barrel trousers last night and she said that as a “thick thigh girlie” she found them the most flattering shape on her, and I just thought, yup, I feel seen. Skinnies always looked shit on me.

You might be right @Belmondo I am still living in my Uniqlo ones at the moment.
i have had a disaster with Next mid rise barrels. So I am still on the look out for a couple more options !
This style is definitely me sorted for the foreseeable
it’s the first time I have really enjoyed wearing trousers for a few years .
skinnies were my nemesis!

I have the Beyond Nine ones linked by @Seeyouincourtyoufool and love them. Nice good quality, thick material and wash well.
