It’s too cold for bare ankles in the Autumn

I’ve been enjoying myself looking at Autumn fashion recently, but really struggle with the footwear element as so many outfits are styled with bare legs. Yep cropped trousers look fab with trainers/loafers, but it’s already too cold in my part of the UK to wear them without socks, which isn’t always as easy to pull off. So many looks just aren’t going to work for me as they’re styled with bare ankles I want to wear some slightly cropped trousers, but struggle to work out what to wear on my feet.

Following.

I struggle with cold ankles in chilly weather.

Floisme · 12/09/2025 17:50

I just wear them with socks, preferably some that are a tiny bit interesting - not jazzy or quirky, just socks that I'm happy to have on view. It felt a bit weird the first couple of years but now I don't even think about it.

Just a sliver of of sock though, not a whole calf length.

HarperStern · 12/09/2025 17:51

I agree, this has been going on for years and I find it weird. Why can't stylists bear thevsight of a socked foot or leg in tights? Who goes around in a cord mini and bare legs in November?

Overtheatlantic · 12/09/2025 17:53

I bared my ankles today and they froze. It was also windy and raining. Time for ankle boots.

HollyhockDays · 12/09/2025 17:53

Pop socks?

IGaveSoManySigns · 12/09/2025 17:55

I’ve got ankle boots on but my trousers are too short when I sit down, so they look a bit silly.

im inside 90% of the day, so I’ll just go for bare ankles and cope on my walk to and from work.

SpigTheFish · 12/09/2025 17:55

Flesh coloured pop socks? 😆

Seriously though, your only option is socks in a contrasting or blending colour.

Personally, I go bare legged into November and then wear boots.

Chewbecca · 12/09/2025 17:58

I agree!

I think (for me) it is mostly bare ankles until it is too cold for that, then straight to boots.

I do have a couple of thin pairs of socks, might look for more like them actually.

TwilightSkies · 12/09/2025 18:06

I can’t have bare ankles in cool weather. It makes my feet cold.
Id much rather stay warm in normal trousers!
When I see women with their bare ankles on show in winter it makes me shiver 🥶

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 18:06

I just wear socks with cropped lengths

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 18:07

I feel bare ankles and no socks look odd these days

Mumteedum · 12/09/2025 18:10

I cannot claim it is fashionable but I stopped caring about that a long time ago..I I ever did.

I bought knee high socks last year and wore them under trousers and they're lovely.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 12/09/2025 18:11

I’m so glad I’m not alone. For those of you that wear sock with cropped trousers what do you do if black socks are too harsh? I’m wearing a pair of dark beige/camel trousers with a khaki knit, I tried black socks on earlier but they look odd, I also tried some ankle boots, but as someone said above they look odd when you sit down and have a strange sliver of moony white leg appear.

OP posts:
bapples1 · 12/09/2025 18:14

@CharlotteSometimes1 maybe socks that match your knit? I would worry less about the colour when wearing boots & sitting down.

Overtheatlantic · 12/09/2025 18:14

I have socks in beige, cream, and grey that I wear with ankle boots.

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 18:15

Sometimes I wear contrasting socks, sometimes a similar colour to my trainers. It depends on what I'm wearing

evtheria · 12/09/2025 18:24

I switch between solid, jewel colours and various versions of gothy/alt-y stripes (black and X colour stripes) if I know a bit of sock will be on show. I’ll save black socks for if I’m wearing either black trousers or black boots, so it just blends in/extends the length of the item (so goes my thinking). My clothes are mostly dark and in neutrals like black, navy, charcoal, or dark brown, so solid colour socks add a bit of interest. My sister chooses all the fun or odd socks (like socks with bao prints or diamantés) but she wears a lot more colour than I do and has to dress quite formal for work, so she likes getting unusual ones.

The difficult thing is finding socks that are the right length! Not so short they disappear inside the boot, thereby defeating the purpose, but not so long I struggle to find good colours or they feel weird under my trousers…

It looks very odd. It always did look odd to me but it looks dated and odd now.

Khaki or burgundy?

Depending on the length of trousers I'll wear regular calf length socks, or knee high if I don't want to shop any skin.
Cambridge sock company for cosy socks in all the colours, or Sock Shop for knee highs.

EscapadeVelocity · 12/09/2025 19:07

I don’t think I’ve seen a bare ankle in a fashion photograph (on a website or in a newspaper) for at least ten years - so where have you been looking, @CharlotteSometimes1?

For me this isn’t even a question - I wear nice socks (visibly) with shoes, and either ankle or calf length boots. Generally shoes with trousers and shoes or boots with skirts and dresses. I prefer the look of knee high boots with shorter skirts (that is, just below the knee) but that really doesn’t work in the heat of summer.

(Years ago when I I first stopped wearing tights I lived in bare legs for about 9 months of every year. But I’m completely sold on beautifully coloured socks now.)

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 19:10

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle as a 90s teen, visible socks were a fashion crime 😆

CharlotteSometimes1 · 12/09/2025 19:34

@EscapadeVelocity Instagram and brands own websites 🤷🏻‍♀️

im so glad I posted, you’ve all inspired me to up my sock game so I’m off to find Goldilocks socks - not too short, not too synthetic, great colours, maybe some texture. If I find any that haven’t been mentioned I’ll post them here.

Ooh I’ve just thought about TKMaxx DH had a phase of buying Happy Socks and I found they sold them much cheaper so I’ll see what my local branch has.

No socks is starting to look pretty dated so I’d just get socks. Just coordinate to your outfit or neutral. (Big white socks are very in but I think that looks too casual personally).
