Is M&S really having a moment?

I keep seeing/hearing that M&S is having an amazing season, but I'm not getting it. Browsing the website I see nothing special. What am I missing? What have you bought recently which has really thrilled you?

Yep, me too. And their new 'Air Yarn' bobbles immediately too. I wore my new Air Yarn jumper to drive 2 hrs to visit DD. By the time I arrived it had bobbled terribly where the seat belt went across my chest.

I worn one to a restaurant, and it bobbled where my (admittedly huge) boobs were brushing against the table. That went straight back!

I love M&S. I went to our local city and wasn’t impressed but our one in our dying town is brilliant. Classic and trusty with good quality.

TBH, I only see some men waiting while the women they are with are trying on clothes in the locked, secure cubicles. They often look bored, but obviously are there to give an invited opinion. Its not like they are ogling in a communal changing room.

I mean their policy of allowing trans identifying males into women’s changing rooms.

I know, and reports of this were alarming (I'm a WRN member and a CSA survivor, I get it), but i think it may be a bit unfair to keep pulling this card when it comes to M&S. My local store, at least, has addressed concerns by providing secure, roomy changing cubicles. It wouldn't be possible for anyone in a neighbouring cubicle to film anyone, plus there's always a staff member present, with a clear view of the cubicles and waiting area. If a man was in another cubicle trying on dresses in my M&S it wouldn't make me feel unsafe, just pee'd off.

I'm another 8-10 who struggles to find the things I like in my size. This is made harder by also wanting the long version, which always seems to sell out quickly online.

The number of things I would have bought if they'd been available is many, many times bigger than the number of things I actually have bought. It's incredibly difficult to find good tall clothes at the moment.

Cinaferna · 13/09/2025 11:13

Good jeans, great cords. They had way better linen trousers than usual this summer and lovely chinos. I bought two pairs. The style I'd been seeking for years - just well fitting, straight legged classics.

I can never find any small sizes (8-10) and everything seems designed for someone with a large waist or stomach - a built-in pouch if you like.

I believe London branches may have some nice items but sadly, they never seem to make it to the regions.

Ooh! I have a large waist and a built in pouch! I haven’t actually tried M&S jeans but I’ll give them a go!

Oh yuck. Havent they reversed that nonsense yet?

Not yet. Makes me reluctant to spend my money there until they do.

I’m 52 and love clothes. I didn’t think I’d ever shop in M&S but some things are great though agree with PPs that there’s too much polyester. I think they appeal to many ages now so while I like some things, other items I’d never wear but my mum & her friends love. I don’t know of anyone under 25 who’d shop there as of that age most want fashion / the right brand and not classic styles but work colleagues in their 30s pick the brand odd item up there which I don’t think would have been the case years ago.

Their jeans are great for the price though trying to get hold of size 10 regular length carrot jeans is proving impossible! Had some in a size 12 but lost some weight and they are too big now but when they did fit they looked great. Just wish their stock levels for things like this would improve - they know these jeans always sell out so why don’t they make more of them!! I’m checking their website constantly and always have a look on the off chance if near a store.

I’ll gladly take the 12s off your hands 😁

I bought a denim jumpsuit there at the weekend. It was true to size. I was pleasantly surprised by how flattering it was.

You're so lucky. I tried it on and looked like an extra off Prisoner Cell Block H! (yes I'm showing my age) I think I need to accept that jumpsuits are not for me.

That made me chuckle - showing my age too. I've never gone for jumpsuits due to a long body and short legs. I like the idea of them though.

Softpebbles · 13/09/2025 15:11

I got a lovely coat, some nice wide leg trousers and a tshirt this week from m and s. There was quite a lot of nice bits!

The last time I wore a denim jumpsuit DH glanced up and asked me to change the oil in his car.

Git.

CharlesPetrescu · 13/09/2025 21:15

@B1anche I bet you looked good. We can be our own harshest critics sometimes. I remember Cell Block H. I'm no spring chicken myself.

AzureOrca · 14/09/2025 08:02

I don't wear trousers, my legs are too fat. I go in to look for skirts, find one i like and lo and behold I would need to be 6 foot tall to wear it, and that includes the petite size 14 and 16's. I did buy some long sleeved t-shirts though. But again went up a size as they seem to be made smaller now that last year.

Washingupdone · 14/09/2025 08:24

People in Europe would like to buy M&S online but that is not possible.

QueenOfErrors · 14/09/2025 10:53

Our local M&S became the East Midlands flag ship store after closing the town one. Had high hopes for the more interesting items but It’s full of boring colours for giants. knitwear made in recycled fabrics that wear very badly and do not last a season.
Jeans and pants are very good. Otherwise there is nothing to love and keep. Being an optimistic person I use it to keep my daily steps up.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 14/09/2025 11:53

I don’t think it is M&S but they stock this Albaray brand and this bomber is gorgeous:

I spotted it on an instagrammer and really like it. Sadly it’s sold out in size 8 atm and considering it is oversized I think a 10 would drown my petite frame ahhhh

but anyway, M&S do stock other brands which are very good is my point here

I find that their stuff looks nice on the hanger/mannequin, but absolutely shit on me. The cut always seems to be wrong, hemlines are wavy, things are a bit too short or too wide, or they shrink after one wash.

In the last five years I’ve wasted so much money, and only one dress and one cashmere hoody have stayed the distance.

Even their knickers have gone a bit off.

FishPie2 · 14/09/2025 12:24

Thanks for mentioning the Air Yarn bobbles, I have looked at cardigan with bottom pockets this week and was undecided about it then decided to buy one today but won't bother now. I was so annoyed last year when I spent £50 on a knitted aran type bomber jacket and it looked rubbish after wearing for about 2 weeks and had to de bobble it when I wanted to wear it. Now I wouldn't even take it to the Charity Shop.
There is a short sleeved textured cardingan that I looked at and 3 of them had large pulls in them, the woman in the changing rooms said she wouldn't buy them as she had seen quite a few like that and had mentioned it to manager but they are still on sale.

ShortberryStrawcake · 14/09/2025 13:25

A lot of their autumn/winter stuff looks cold, drab and uncomfortable. I love their cosy jeggings but as usual they didn't have my size in store so had to order online. I applaud them for their affordable ostomy undies.

Anjelika · 14/09/2025 14:25

I visited a big city centre store yesterday to look for jeans. Still no boyfriends in size 10 in the lighter wash and absolutely no barrels smaller than a 12.

sunshinechaser · 14/09/2025 14:32

@Anjelika it’s so frustrating isn’t it? I emailed them about stock availability years ago and just got a waffly PR style email back.

ClawsandEffect · 14/09/2025 18:22

No, M&S definitely ISN'T having a moment. I'm a granny, not particularly a trendy one either, and I went into M&S yesterday. Was up for buying a few bits and could only find a pair of jeans. So dowdy.

No beef with their trans policy BTW. Just the terrible clothing.
