How do you keep your hair smooth and salon fresh

OP posts:
spring1979 · 31/08/2025 14:13

Every other day . Shampoo conditioner treatment or a serum . Blow dry straight and run straighteners through ends . If going out I do a blow wave with air wrap then neaten with straighteners . And lots of hairspray

Dippythedino · 31/08/2025 14:19

I usually wash my hair twice weekly but during the recent heat wave, I washed it 3/4 times depending on how greasy it became.

I usually wash with cantu shampoo & conditioner & apply an argan oil mask once a month.

I blow dry the roots and leave the rest to air dry.

coravantexel · 31/08/2025 14:47

I do mine every other day. Shampoo and conditioner (currently Keraphixx) then a heat protector (Virtue) before I blow dry. In between days I freshen it up with dry shampoo.

I have thick, mid length straight hair that I wash once a week after my big sweaty Sunday run. SLS, paraben and silicone free shampoo and conditioner (change it up depending on what’s on offer). Quick blow dry if I cba. No colour or treatments. Trim once a year or so. Occasionally use Lush dry shampoo if it’s looking greasy at the end of the week.

It took about a year for me to get to the point where I only wash once a week but my hair is about a million times better for it. Not a split end in sight and it’s always super glossy.

henlake7 · 31/08/2025 16:13

I wash once a week using Aussie shampoo.
Then smother my hair in Garnier hair mask stuff for a good half hour (complete with very attractive shower cap on!).
Then either air dry and spray with leave in avocado oil, or blow dry with a heat protecting spray.
oh and then have a good cry at how dry and frizzy my hair is (abit of grease actually makes my hair look better!).

Chin length bob, weekly blow dry.

in my mid sixties, my hair has never looked this good. Apart from the two hour round trip to keep that weekly appointment , my hair gets a quick brush every morning and honestly even if I forget that one day it still looks pretty good. Not just me saying this, perfect strangers compliment me. Ridiculously spoiled but hey it works.

Same, shoulder length

I also wear a silk cap in bed
All " must wash your hair every day" ruins it-its just so they can sell you shampoo and conditioner then it's wrecked so they sell you more stuff

Silverbirchleaf · 31/08/2025 16:22

Wash my hair every two to three days. Shampoo and conditioner, as dries out. Trying various different shampoos at the moment , since Elvive changed their formula (see other thread regarding this). Sometimes blow dry my hair, other days leave it to dry naturally (‘cause I’m lazy).

Fionasapples · 31/08/2025 16:24

@IncaDog interesting that you say that air dried hair gets greasy. That's what I experience too. I would have thought blow dried hair would get greasy quicker.
Do you know why? I asked my hairdresser but she didn't seem to know.

IncaDog · 01/09/2025 16:22

@FionasapplesI would imagine it’s something to do with bacteria breeding in the damp, warm conditions

I am no scientist but if I leave my hair to air dry then I’m an oil slick within 24 hours.

greengreyblue · 01/09/2025 16:27

Wash it twice a week in the shower. I like OGX coconut shampoo and conditioner . I let it semi dry then add milkshake spray in conditioner and blow dry straight ish as I have thick, wavy bob length hair. Then I smooth with a straightener and make loose waves. I use straighteners to redo waves most days .

That’s unusual. I let mi e dry naturally this morning as off work. No difference apart from mega curly when left to its own devices

Wash every 5-7 days, used to be more often when I was younger but now in my 40s. I use a leave-in hair mask and put a little on the ends overnight before I am due to wash. Always blow dry and very rarely straighten. I do use olaplex every 3 or so weeks and use redken bonding treatment before I blow dry as my hair is prone to frizz.

I have thick dark (also grey and coloured) course, wavy and porous hair that needs washing 3 times a week at the most. I have a silk pillowcase and find washing and styling it in the evening and then sleeping on it smooths it out, stops the big bounce. I have learned a routine to keep my hair as smooth as possible ( do not rub with a towel/ hair dryer pointing down the hair shaft / use pantene as my hair loves the thick plastic coating ).

My tips are shampoo the roots only, gentle massage, not crazy rubbing. Rinse then condition the from top of ear (ish) to ends. Rinse under colder water using a tangle brush under the stream of water to gently ensure every strand is coated in conditoner and to smooth the hair out.

Squeeze the water out, do not rub hair with towel. I wrap it up in a microfibre hair towel whilst I get ready. I cannot leave it to dry on its own my hair would take at least 4hrs and be a frizzy mess. I tend to blast it almost dry with a strong hairdryer using the thin vent pointing down from the crown to the ends for cuticle smoothness. When almost dry, I use the revlon one step to blow/ smooth the hair into bouncy blow dry which takes about 5 mins in sections. I don't use too much product and it looks better the day after sleeping on it.

I have very short white hair. I wash it once a week with Simple shampoo. If I wash it more frequently it is dry and lifeless. I just towel it dry, move it into place with my fingers. No brush or comb. End of.

Same (except my hair is not white).

I've got a pixie cut with a little length left on top. I wash it every day - just herbal essences. I condition it once or twice a week. Takes me about 2 mins to dry it - again just fingers, no brush.

The biggest thing that transformed my hair from a wavy frizzy mess to silky and smooth was sleeping with a silky bonnet.

I wash my hair 2 times a week (dry shampoo is my saviour) and have to blow dry properly so my hair is smooth and sleek. Bedtime I put it up in a loose silk scrunchy and sleep with the bonnet, the next day I can just take the scrunchy out, brush, hair oil and my hair looks just as good as the day before.

Follow The Blowout Professor on YouTube, it's only since I started following his routine that my hair has completely transformed.
