How to accessorise this dress?

AnotherDressOne · 25/08/2025 12:27

I bought this dress for an upcoming wedding and am slightly regretting it. I'm 38 and think it maybe looks a bit old for me ... or maybe I just want to look younger than I am/feel!!

Anyway, I don't want to buy another dress so I'm wondering how to best accessorise this one. I am rubbish at this stuff!

I'm tall and I have a dodgy ankle and a toddler so I tend to avoid heels, but am wondering about maybe low wedges with this.

Any suggestions? 😊

@GarlicLitre why such a dick? It's quite clearly a female model, having a straight up and down figure makes you no less of a woman than having an hourglass one.

If you'd RTFT you'd see that OP wants something appropriate and that suits her.

something appropriate and that suits her is no guidance at all without further insight into personal taste and/or the anticipated style of the wedding.

And that's a bloke. I obviously don't know how he 'identifies' but I do know a male neck and hands when I see them. Pretty face, though.

Check out AX Paris OP… lots of midi length dresses, but still young and trendy, and very reasonably priced!

This is also in a soft colour and easy shape. Would look lovely with gathered ballet flats.

That genuinely looks like a medieval peasant fancy dress costume.

I think the dress you’ve chosen is a bit bland op.

Tell us, what colour really suits you.

That's Angela Reynolds, a very successful FEMALE model, journalist, and artist https://tateokaoffice.com/models/angela/

But good for you and the "you can always tell" crowd, hey?

AnotherDressOne · 27/08/2025 11:22

Thanks for the input and suggestions! I've been looking at Hot Squash and Girl in Mind, there are some there that catch my eye but which I wouldn't normally wear.

For those who've asked, I suit cold colours and prefer blue, green or purple. I'm not big into patterns but it wouldn't necessarily put me off. Maybe I do dress modestly but it's not on purpose. I don't like my non-existent cleavage (small boobs and a prominent chest bone to thank for that) and I avoid dresses where I can't wear a proper bra. I do like high necklines (among others) and I have square shoulders so I don't wear halter necks. The wedding is in an upmarket country hotel with lovely grounds, and see above re toddler 😂 It's not black tie or anything like that. I have no tone around my belly at all so I suppose I was looking for a dress that would hide my lumps and bumps. Midi length.

If it makes a differences, my husband and stepson are wearing kilts and my toddler is wearing a floral jumpsuit.

I think you need to go to specsavers if you think those are male hands and a male neck! What a nasty comment.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/08/2025 11:38

Well you’ll need to up your game then op because the family’s outfits all sound adorable! I think you need to go cuter. How about a jumpsuit for you too?

so many of us are so critical of our own bodies aren’t we? I included myself in that. It’s such a shame.

GarlicLitre · 27/08/2025 14:56

Forgot to add: Sticking purely to the question in the OP, I'd suggest chunky silver sandals as above and wide, statement bangles/cuffs. Alternatively, wear it with trainers and socks.

I'm not 100% sure this dress can be 'updated', really, though. It's a very distinct style.

Goditsmemargaret · 27/08/2025 16:28

So you're tall, slim and have small boobs OP - you have lots of options!!! Personally I'd go with a jumpsuit but out of the suggestions here the only ones I'd consider are @GarlicLitre River Island or the bright blue Nobody's Child dress.

FattyMcFattyArse · 27/08/2025 16:39

what about this one?

I love the red but they also have it in blue.

Bang goes the rather lovely jumpsuit I was thinking of suggesting as you're not wild about patterns and the straps might make an ordinary bra tricky!

But maybe this blue dress in ramie would work? The silky finish of the fabric and the handkerchief hemline* should elevate it above the ordinary and almost any colour(s) would work for the rest of the outfit and accessories.

*Yes, I know they're marmite, but I think they can work well in plain colours.

Oh no please do share the jumpsuit!! I would like a jumpsuit but it's a struggle to get one that would fit me. I haven't seen a suitable one I like the look of anyway. I'm not a fan of that dress though

You do realise that's just a different colour of the same dress? 😆

So I love the shape and colours of this one but predictably, it's not in my size.

I've been looking for others like it, there are some to look through!

@BitOutOfPractice I'm not sure how my husband and stepson would feel about being described in any way adorable 😂 Daughter - yes, absolutely so 😄

I misread ypur post, I thought you had put

'I am tall, and I have a dodgy ankle and a todger... '

and was going to suggest you wore a Playtex Girdle!
But no matter, now I have re-read your post you can just ignore me.

Courlis · 27/08/2025 20:26

@AnotherDressOne The jumpsuit I dismissed. The front view makes it look potentially a bit risqué for those of us with modest cleavage, but the tie straps should allow some adjustment. The model is barefoot, so you wouldn't necessarily trip over your hemline chasing your toddler!

I love the bright blue one as well. It's very striking, colour and style.

I’m just loving on the kilts thing! 🤷‍♀️
