How to accessorise this dress?

I bought this dress for an upcoming wedding and am slightly regretting it. I'm 38 and think it maybe looks a bit old for me ... or maybe I just want to look younger than I am/feel!!

Anyway, I don't want to buy another dress so I'm wondering how to best accessorise this one. I am rubbish at this stuff!

I'm tall and I have a dodgy ankle and a toddler so I tend to avoid heels, but am wondering about maybe low wedges with this.

Any suggestions? 😊

I might be in a minority, but i really like the monsoon dress you already bought, OP, and I think it's the nicest of all the ones linked here. I'd pair it with silver flats, and a silver clutch, long silver earrings and bracelet.

'Are you very against fashionable clothes?'.

Completely unnecessary comment, byt then this is S and B, the home of snidery ( I just invented that word for this purpose).
Also, OP, your first dress is not to my taste but it's far from the worst thing I have seen. I probably wouldn't notice it.

Grammarnut · 26/08/2025 11:53

If it's the purple one I would wear a feature chunky necklace and low heels. If a hat-job is needed then a low key fascinator.
If it's the blue one take it back.

Not quite the same shade, but also a muted blue:

Coast dress

I'm early 40s with two young DC and also struggled recently to find a wedding guest dress; I think I literally must have scoured a good 95% of all occasion dresses currently out there 😁

There are some terrible dresses on this thread but that one takes the biscuit.

Hdpr's Hot Squash suggestions aren't my thing but I agree with her idea of looking for something you [general you] might wear again rather than an "occasion dress"

These are both lovely too!

Agree there are some frumpy suggestions on here- OP is 38, not 138.

YYYDlilah · 26/08/2025 13:17

Oh dear. That Coast dress is terrible.

Edited

Why do you think older women want to wear ugly dresses? There are some horrendous dresses on this thread. I wouldn't pick the Mint Velvet one as a first choice but it's the only one I'd think of wearing.

PickleASturgeon · 26/08/2025 13:30

Think wedges may look a bit heavy with your dress. A pp suggested silver and I think that's what I would go with. If you don't want to spend too much on the shoes Next and Matalan have loads of silver shoes and sandals (& bags) that won't break the bank.

I was going to say this!

I don't.

@QueenMummyTheFirst , I agree.

Then why mention this?

Agree there are some frumpy suggestions on here- OP is 38, not 138. What difference does her age make?

I was mainly referring to OP's original worry about her first dress being too old for her, but also I'm certainly not the first person to ever collate frumpy clothes to older people. I am not saying every older person wears frumpy clothes, clearly. It's really not that deep.

Hahaha I'm not actually that technologically illiterate, just sleep deprived

Really have excelled myself here 😂

It’s a pretty dress and as you say you are tall, it should look good on you.
You can’t accessorise it much as there is already lacework on bodice. You can wear similar colour or pale gold flat sandals with some decorative elements, a nice bracelet and drop / dangle earrings, also a nice clutch.

When I said similar colour, I meant similar colour sandals like in photo. I read another post by you and you really dislike it, in that case order Paisie ones and see which one looks the best on you. 38 is still young. You won’t look old in any of the dresses you linked here. You don’t have to go with shapeless, balloon sleeves to look young and trendy.

StasisMom · 26/08/2025 20:13

I love this! Obvs I have zero need for it... 🙄

Matildahoney · 26/08/2025 21:47

Have a look at Lipsy on Next, or Girl in Mind, you're 38, still young, and I agree with others, with your height at your size you must look good in lots of things.

GarlicLitre · 26/08/2025 22:37

Bloody hell. I'm a sucker for innovative shapes and origami draping, but wtf? They've put it on a male model and it still looks fucking awful: I daren't imagine how breasts and hips would manage in that farrago 😬

Now I've seen a couple of PPs like it, I'll do best to comment that we all have different tastes, and thank goodness!

OP, apart from the colour, what attracted you to the mother-of-the-bride number you originally chose? Maybe you are very conservative. Do you insist on a high neckline? Like a clean, neat line? Just adore lace? It's true that, with your shape, you'll make any dress look its best, but what do you actually want?
