D&B night in my 40s: what do people wear?!

Username0001 · 07/08/2025 10:29

I’m going to a D&B night for the first time in nearly 20 years soon. And it struck me that I have no idea what people wear on a night out these days.

Looking at similar events, I see mostly sweaty men in their 20s wearing T shirts. There are young women around but they’re much younger than me and so packed into the boys it’s hard to see what they’re wearing.

Someone please help me find something to wear!

I’m mid 40s, athletic size 10/12, 5’7”, I don’t wear skirts or dresses or heels.

I was thinking of wearing some coated (?) black skinny jeans & black vest and trainers.

I don’t mind looking my age. I expect to get sweaty (alternative is light grey skinny jeans but concerned they’ll show up the sweat). I don’t want to draw attention to myself, just want to blend into the background!

Please help!

Outfit sounds perfect. I normally go for a Manners LDN dress as don’t need a bra with them
Have the best time! Can guarantee you won’t be the oldest there, always a really good crowd at the D&B nights I go to

wizzywig · 07/08/2025 14:38

Sorry whats d&b?

RomainingCalm · 07/08/2025 14:42

@wizzywig I think it's a Drum and Bass Night but I haven't Googled just in case it turns out to be something very different! 😀

MsAlignment · 07/08/2025 14:49

I’d have said a white vest and white silk shorts (thigh or Bermuda length according to your preference) might look more contemporary? That all black, skinny jeans look is kinda tired and I was a rock chick back in the day, y’know!

CanOfMangoTango · 07/08/2025 15:13

Definitely wear trainers.

I usually wear a body from Zara and loose combats. I wouldn't wear skinny jeans tbh.

Yes drum & bass! Nothing untoward! (Despite the associated ‘culture’ - none of that either)

Thanks for the suggestion. Body suits don’t work for me, I have a longer than average torso.

Where is it on op!?

my husband nearly 50 and I’m nearly 40 and we got to drum sheds and print works and stuff regularly

I just wear all black usually jeans and converse or in summer maybe black denim shorts and black T-shirt

honestly don’t overthink it nobody cares what you look like

i always come out a sweaty mess anyway

BemVindo · 07/08/2025 18:49

I’m 40s, tall, size 12. I go to hip hop and house nights where I dance ALOT, and tend to wear wide leg trousers or jeans and trainers with a bodysuit or fitted top or a funky fitted tee-shirt with logo/artist/record label logo etc, Jazz it up a bit with jewellery and make up.

Although I’ve just made myself sound about 100 years old by saying ‘funky’ and ‘jazz it up’ 😆

BetweenTwoFerns · 07/08/2025 18:53

I definitely thought it was domination and bondage and I don’t even know why I thought that because my dc and husband all listen to drum and bass!

TheLongRider · 07/08/2025 18:53

I wear Ankara print cotton jumpsuits. They have pockets and are stylish and breathable. Ubiquitous Uniqlo bag and I'm out from dusk til dawn. I'm out for a good time not a long time and I don't care who sees my bass face!

Ooh could you link sounds great!

I still go to festivals but not been proper clubbing for a while and not D&B for even longer ... I need to know, are D&B nights still full of men in black puffa jackets regardless of the temperature or was that just a late 90s early 00s thing?

This sounds interesting (I had a quick google) - where do you get your jumpsuits from?

Wow, you sound awesome!

I wish we were cool enough for drum sheds, but sadly we live far, far away.

We’re going to Chase & Status at All Points East (DH booked it, I only realised this morning it’s more of an all dayer, and outside). It’s next week - so I’m cutting this very fine!

Ahhh it will be great!! I was at lcd sound system there last year :) (lots of nice places to get decent drinks / cocktails too)

Very chill festival deffo go comfortable clothes!

I saw chase & status at Glastonbury 2 years ago I think at the Arcadia stage it was so fun

You’ll have a blast :)

Username0001 · 12/08/2025 14:52

Thanks for all the tips.

I had ordered some wide black jeans, but they’re not going to arrive on time.

But I’ve got some baggy green vans carpenter trousers that I was going to wear instead, with a black vest or cropped vest (midriff out? At my age?!). (And a studded belt like I wore in the olden days 😲😁)

But it’s as hot today where I am as it’s forecast to be in London on Saturday. (Which is less hot than it is today, but hot enough).

I do also have these ‘palazzo’ hippy type trousers (photo from Etsy). Would these work, with the black vest (& converse).

Too much fabric! You’ll lose half your body weight in perspiration.

😆 thanks! I think you may be right, but surely less sweaty than either sturdy cotton trousers or skinny jeans?

I would think more about what’s appropriate for the weather than what might be specifically ‘cool’ for the event.

(Because collapsing from heat stroke would not be cool …)

Thanks. You have a good point. But sadly that article only caters to the dress wearing women. I don’t wear dresses.

I have ruled out any kind of cropped top. My midriff is definitely not coming out. And the baggy vans trousers look awful. So they’re out too.

I think it’ll be grey skinny jeans and possibly chopping up one of DHs t-shirts to go with it.

Do you have any light shorts? Like a linen type material or yes linen trousers

i wore super light material leopard print cycle shorts today with a plain black tank top and converse

honestly you are worrying too much about what loooks coop or fashionable / nobody cares ! Just wear something light and comfy for the hot weather

would you wear a play suit type thing??

Ezesonfire · 12/08/2025 17:54

I’d do denim shorts, or maybe even a pair of tailored shorts, and tuck in a vest or sleeveless tank top. Cross body or bum bag and trainers. dress it up with some big hoops and a chunky necklace, or this one that’s currently sitting in my basket…. 😎
Have a great time!

I would have thought for someone who doesn’t wear skirts, breezy silk or linen shorts might be the best option. (Hence suggesting them nearly a week ago … 😁)

I do empathise, OP; I’m going to London tomorrow (the London I used to live and work in for years, and that’s only an hour up the road) and suddenly not a single thing I own seems quite right.
