A genuinely waterproof, beautiful coat?

I live in a very wet part of the country and walk a lot, and would pay serious money for an attractive rain coat made of thin but properly waterproof fabric. For me, attractive means calf-length, kind of draped and shapely, in a charcoal or dark blue colour which wouldn't show the dirt too much, and which it is possible to put layers under - it doesn't have to be warm.
This would replace my extensive raincoat collection which includes:

  • A long Barbour waxed coat which even when re-waxed and therefore dry on the inside, absorbs water and becomes exhaustingly heavy
  • A horrible plastic cagoul thing which is too sweaty to wear
  • A walking jacket which is breathable but which needs washing periodically, and since the second wash has become only slightly shower proof, even though i use the so-called waterproofing liquid as directed
  • A stiff, uncomfortable short jacket from Seasalt in fabric which actually is waterproof but only keeps selected parts of me dry
I could go on, but any recommendations would be gratefully received.

Not the same quality as didrikson/rains/seasalt/fjällräven but should last you a couple of years at least, or longer with good care.

NewHat · 04/08/2025 15:59

I also have a didricksons coat. It’s excellent.

sweetpickle2 · 04/08/2025 16:01

I have this from ASOS, only bought it as a cheap stopgap as couldn't justify paying Rains prices but its the best thin waterproof coat I've ever bought https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-rubberised-rain-parka-coat-in-black/prd/204433866#colourWayId-204433872

@Gothzilla, those coats are seriously gorgeous. Now REALLY wanting the long lightweight one and trying to choose between blackberry, navy or the classic olive...

mamagogo1 · 04/08/2025 16:06

I have a calf length waterproof (as in really waterproof) jacket from mountain warehouse that’s now 5 years old and still waterproof, I’ve never washed it though, I sponge clean it. Stylish isn’t the right term but it does the job and look fine for day to day use, looks better than shorter jackets

Dellaandthedealer · 04/08/2025 18:26

I have just bought a raincoat by Dublin in an equestrian shop ( not a bit horsey!)
Navy, long, drawstring waist to give a bit of shape. Now waiting for the rain………

Have a look at Protected Species. Lightweight totally waterproof soft and stylish. I love mine.

Edited

I love my protected species rain coat/Mac. It looks so stylish for work but is incredibly comfortable and practical. The fabric is so soft but completely waterproof. I actually got a compliment from a work colleague today.

Jedstre · 04/08/2025 18:41

In terms of thin,so you can layer underneath, waterproof and good looks, I’m very happy with my protected species jacket (which I heard about on here). I was incredibly lucky to get a new one on Vinted.
I’ve got Didrikson and Seasalt jackets but they’re a different beast, better for colder weather.

littleteapot86 · 04/08/2025 18:44

I also have the Protected Species trench. It's a lovely coat. Totally waterproof. I am 5 foot 3 and it falls to mid calf.

WellyMcLonglegs · 04/08/2025 19:08

I echo Protected Species, one of my most complimented items of clothing. It's beautifully made and totally waterproof.

MarySueSaidBoo · 04/08/2025 19:10

I've got a Didrikson's waterproof that I can wear to work or for dog walking. It's a lovely long length and totally 100% downpour proof.

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 04/08/2025 19:16

I like the Protected Species one but the sleeves are SO long on me and I'm only 5'4". Mine is now too big as well as I lost weight, but I'm not sure about buying a smaller one as I don't know if the sleeves will be any better. I know they say it's to keep your hands a bit covered, but it was impractical being quite so long for me.

AlertCat · 04/08/2025 19:44

There is a Protected Species cropped trench (“Commuter”?) on Vinted right now. It isn’t what I’m after (was hoping for a Quest, because although at 50% off I would snap one up, I just can’t buy a white coat and that’s the only colour left) but someone here might appreciate it!

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 04/08/2025 19:47

I’m in a very rainy location and I adore my Stutterheims. Wear over layers for warmth, keep everything but the worst storms out (I have other, more technical, coats for proper bad weather!)

Another vote for Protected Species. I've had mine for about 5 years and it still looks great. Really well made and comfortable light material that works well with layers in winter as well as warmer months. Expensive but the best raincoat investment I've made so far.

PerformativeBewilderment · 04/08/2025 20:51

I’m selling my Protected Species trench coat (burgundy, size 10-12) on Vinted as the hood is too big for my head. Tested in Yorkshire and very waterproof, but best for someone with more / thicker hair than me

linky in case anyone is looking 👀

This is the one I’ve got although mine is a burgundy colour and knee length - I want a longer version now. I’m not keen on any of the other styles but I do like this one.

I have this Protected Species raincoat in navy, from a recommendation on here years ago. It's not 'beautiful', but it's flattering, waterproof and can be stuffed in a bag without it having a single creasing. It's probably my best Mumsnet 'Swears By' buy.

JellyLlama · 04/08/2025 21:45

...crease, not creasing.

Helpisneeded100 · 04/08/2025 21:47

Protected species are an amazing brand and the costs are gorgeous. Wind proof and waterproof.

faffadoodledo · 05/08/2025 07:28

I love my didriksons coats. But I am baffled by washing instructions which seem to suggest you just wash them in non bio product, then iron them to reactivate the waterproofing. Has anyone done this?

EstherGreenwood63 · 05/08/2025 11:56

Oh the Longcoats Lamorna looks great. Long enough! I got a never worn riding coat on Vinted for under 20 quid. It's a Rydale, an older one so better quality than their current offerings. It is just bloody marvellous at keeping rain out.

Another vote for Ilse Jacobsen - I'm wearing mine right now. It comes in lots of lovely colours.

I also love my Ilse Jacobsen raincoat. Mine is longish, below the knee on me and I’m 5’8” . It’s fitted and flattering and as it’s wind proof it’s pretty warm. Not lined but the fabric is sort of fluffy on the inside so it’s thick enough to wear alone in Spring/Autumn.
