A genuinely waterproof, beautiful coat?

I live in a very wet part of the country and walk a lot, and would pay serious money for an attractive rain coat made of thin but properly waterproof fabric. For me, attractive means calf-length, kind of draped and shapely, in a charcoal or dark blue colour which wouldn't show the dirt too much, and which it is possible to put layers under - it doesn't have to be warm.
This would replace my extensive raincoat collection which includes:

  • A long Barbour waxed coat which even when re-waxed and therefore dry on the inside, absorbs water and becomes exhaustingly heavy
  • A horrible plastic cagoul thing which is too sweaty to wear
  • A walking jacket which is breathable but which needs washing periodically, and since the second wash has become only slightly shower proof, even though i use the so-called waterproofing liquid as directed
  • A stiff, uncomfortable short jacket from Seasalt in fabric which actually is waterproof but only keeps selected parts of me dry
I could go on, but any recommendations would be gratefully received.

Look for Pret Pour Partir, which are lovely and waterproof, but expensive. You might be lucky and find one you like in the outlet section of their website but it's unlikely to be one of their classic styles unless in a fashionable colour (ie, not navy or charcoal).

I have a Didriksons, which is genuinely waterproof and looks quite smart.

I think I've washed it, probably after falling in mud, and it remained waterproof. I might have used something like Graingers or Nikwax reproofer, I don't remember.

But every time someone asks for 'a waterproof coat that's not hideous' on here, people usually say Didriksons and I'm very happy with mine.

Agree, I have a Didriksons and it's great.

Isolde is not the longest (just under the knee, if you're a tall model) but has a good fit

Nadja is longer but a bit baggy (and I don't like those flaps at the front)

I have a Patagonia City Torrentshell coat which is amazing for summer, but unfortunately they stopped making it.

Generally Scandinavian brands that make ski/sailing jackets are pretty good and waterproof. Have a look at I'd try Fjällräven, Helly Hansen, Norrøna, Bergans, Haglöfs etc.

They all need reproofing eventually though if it's a woven fabric.

I'm with @Trumpton and others and have a navy-blue Protected Species coat. The fabric is amazing - just feels like cloth, not rubbery (which makes me feel sweaty) but so rain-proof. The advert showed the model standing underneath a hose, turned up to the max, an absolute down-pour and I can believe it.

I’ve just had my Rains coat refunded after two replacement where the outer waterproof coating is coming away at the seams, looking shabby and ceasing to be waterproof.

They have been great with their warranty and replacing then refunding, but I would not recommend (but OP if this is what you choose buy from them directly online, I’ve been grateful I haven’t had to deal with a retailers return policy)

I dunno how good these are but the designer here is slightly related to me and she has veg making raincoats for a long time. Not my personal style so I've never got one but I do like them. There's a blurb about the technology on the website.

Been not veg*

I got a thin lightweight but great waterproof coat which has served me well on city breaks/dogwalks.

Sweaty Betty motion longline parka in navy but comes in dark green too. A purchase I haven’t regretted.

pettingzoo · 04/08/2025 10:13

I have a Protected Species one and it is a thing of beauty. Drapey, lovely colour, really waterproof. I managed to rip it though, the first time I wore it, when it got caught on a door hanle. I repaired it and it's barely visible, but seeing as it's the most expensive coat I own I was properly gutted.

I also have a really good long Helly Hansen one. I know you said it didn't need to be warm, but mine is lightly insulated with an amazing hood that doesn't blow down in the wind and is completely waterproof. I get lots of compliments on it (because mine is bright yellow). It was also pricey but I've got my money's worth many times over. I wear it Spring/Winter/Autumn.

This is an ongoing problem for me too. Check out Sport Pursuit, as well as being cheaper prices they often seem to stock a lot of nordic brands. They all seem much better at making nice coats that aren't just shower proof.

gerispringer · 04/08/2025 10:34

Another vote for Ilse Jacobsen - I'm wearing mine right now. It comes in lots of lovely colours.

MsAnnFrope · 04/08/2025 10:36

This thread has led me astray! I needed a parka length for work/life as my Barbour is too hot for summer and needs to go be reward.
Im now dithering between tretorn and protected species! I’m quite short so if anyone has any experience of the fit of both brands that would be really helpful!

Timeforabitofpeace · 04/08/2025 10:46

Joules and Berghaus coats are rainproof.

purser25 · 04/08/2025 11:18

Seasalt do longer raincoats I love mine

HorrorFan81 · 04/08/2025 11:24

I have the Protected Species trench and love it. Always get compliments on it. Have worn it out in absolute torrential downpours and stayed dry underneath and its super lightweight so good for layering. I managed to pick mine up on sale on one of those Secret Sale sites but I'd say its an investment either way - had mine for several years now and still looks great

AnotherVice · 04/08/2025 11:37

Just to add, I love my Protected Species one. I bought a white one (I don’t know what I was thinking!) but it washes so well it’s unreal.

PaddlingSwan · 04/08/2025 11:41

I am just awaiting delivery of a Seasalt Faring waterproof cotton and linen parka, which looked as if it would fit my requirements. It is due today, so fingers crossed.
Seems smart enough to wear to work as well as for dog walking.

Itstwelveoclocksomewhere · 04/08/2025 11:44

I’m sold on the PS raincoats.
Do you have to be tall? Thin? Have a waist (because i
don't have one) and belted coats can look a bit
like a dressing gown on me?

Absentmindedsmile · 04/08/2025 11:46

Not attractive but hands down the best buy ever, no need for my substantial collection now (Barbour, Seasalt, Holland Cooper etc) - Dry Robe.

TizerorFizz · 04/08/2025 11:48

Barbour do waterproof and breathable! As do loads of other brands. Many countryside brands do long and waterproof. Beeghaus, Helly Hansen, Aigle, Regatta, even M&S! So many!

Lorrymum · 04/08/2025 12:26

I have a long Seasalt which keeps me bone dry. I wore a shorter waterproof during heavy rain yesterday. The rain down in rivulets and drenched my jeans.

TizerorFizz · 04/08/2025 13:17

Yes definitely Seasalt.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2025 15:28

Seasalt Plant Hunter

Not sure but qualifies as beautiful but it's warm and waterproof!
