Swimsuit suggestions please!

Hello!

I'd be really grateful for swimsuit style suggestions. I really struggle with suits as I am very body conscious.

I am 5 ft 2 inches. 12 and a half stone and apple shaped. I have a very pronounced stomach thanks to diastasis recti. Broad shoulders. Big boobs and slim nice legs.

I prefer darker colours. I'd like not to look too frumpy or blousy. Budget- up to £100 I think for something nice.

I am utterly unable to judge if things suit my shape. I will think I look okay in a mirror at home then see myself in a photo. Ugh.

I'd be so grateful for any suggestions!

I actually think Next shaper swimsuits are really flattering. Tummy control ones. With your budget you could get three!

BugsyMaroon · 22/07/2025 19:54

Thanks! Am googling now. I'd prefer NOT to spend up to £100 but would if I get desperate!

Would something like this work? Lands End do mix and match tops and bottom

i bought a one piece in a larger size with ruched front panel to fit bigger boobs and cover a small waist rather than hide a tummy

I have this one - I never feel good in a swimsuit (or anything tbh) but I felt ok in this one and it's flattering

These are nice too... like the ditsy lillies one.

Thank you all!

I'm going on a bit of a RL shopping expedition today- to Next as a beginning and then will see where we go. But usually I buy online.... the horror of the fitting room mirror is very real.

I’ve just bought this from M & S, £35, they call it dark raspberry, it’s a very flattering fit, they also do matching overshirt.
I’ve also got a great one from Amazon which is about £50 and comes in various colours, the ruching and thickness are good over the tummy area. I’ve bought a different colour every year so have 4 now

Sainsbury’s has pleasantly surprised me the last couple of years, really impressed.

I'm an apple size 16 and I've got two of these - its the perfect swimsuit for me. Nice to have the removable straps. www.pourmoi.co.uk/products/santa-monica-strapless-control-swimsuit/?styleid=65700

Don't overlook sports shops when you're looking for a swimming costume - I find they tend to have better options for actual swimming and are better "engineered" than the ones you get from fashion shops. I have this one from Decathlon which you might find suitable, as the vest bit skims your tummy but the underneath does hold you in. www.decathlon.co.uk/p/women's-1-piece-swimsuit-ines-tankini-shorty-heva-ondu-khaki/_/R-p-344008

BugsyMaroon · 26/07/2025 08:30

These are all great suggestions, thank you all so much. I am looking at every link.

The sports swimsuit idea is excellent and very tempting indeed. Plus I love a tankini because I hate shaving / waxing my bikini line (and truth is it;s hard to see as my stomach juts out so much.... I really need a surgical repair but have been putting it off ).

I really appreciate everyone's time and suggestions. Thanks

Is this for swimming lengths or is this for a holiday / sunbathing where you might have a dip?

https://www.summersalt.com/products/the-perfect-wrap-one-piece-hibiscus-grapefruit

I have this one which I loved and felt had enough support everywhere. The year I bought that I also bought a black one from Amazon that was also surprising good with tummy control etc. ( they sell Cupshe there also who have horrible returns policy so if you’re tempted by any of their designs try and get it through Amazon)

This year I tried M&S and found them all ridiculous. No bust support despite having tummy control and no back so bum cheeks out. The bikini tops were miniscule. I did end up with something from Sainsbury’s. I dare say M&S had good options back in May but they don’t now ( in my size at least. )

The Perfect Wrap One Piece | Summersalt

The wrap style of this stunner is universally-flattering, and the compression means everything will stay in place while you dive into adventure.

Both swimming often and holidays. I have a swimming class with DS1 every week (He's disabled and parents have to go in with the children... I hate it so much but I do it as he loves it) and also we are about to go on holiday with my hyper critical weight-obsessed parents and my size 6 weight-obsessed sister. Previous holidays I have simply refused to get in the pool/sea. But I don't want to miss out on life anymore tbh.

I have bought the decathlon one just now. I'd love a brighter coloured one also so very much appreciate the links and suggestions. Smile

I think I’d have 2 then… the second one a more colourful / glamourous / joyful design with a matching cover up or sarong. Your sister has obviously succumbed to the pressure from your parents over the years but you absolutely need to embrace everything the holidays has to offer. Hope you have a great time.

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 26/07/2025 09:42

I heard a saying once along the lines of "You wouldn't worry what other people think of you if you realised how seldom they do." It's a bit brutal but strangley reassuring! That said, I also have weight-obsessed parents, especially my mother, so I totally understand where you're coming from. I'm glad my recommendation hit the spot!

I have this and have had lots of compliments on how flattering it is. My friend liked it so much she was planning to buy the same one. I have a similar body shape to you.

Fig Leaves costumes are very good for your shape (and mine). Very flattering. They are sold by Simply Be these days.

Another vote for the Decathlon range here!

Moanycowbag · 26/07/2025 20:42

I like Speedo body shaping, I have the cross knot and liked the Luna Lustre but found the bum a it baggy, I'm an apple and a size 18 top 16 bottom 5ft 2 and wear a 38 which equate too a 14 I think, but I found lots of swimsuits too long in body but these fitted very nicely, I found Next, Pour Moi and Lands End gussets hanging almost around my knees.
