The Leeds Look and regional microtrends

Lighthearted, but...

Right, I know people will wear this outfit in other places, but I live near Leeds but travel a lot for work, and in the summer in Leeds I see so many women wearing specifically a knee length bias cut skirt in polka dot or ditsy floral, with a white slim cut t-shirt. I hardly ever see it anywhere else, but I just counted 4 in 10 minutes in Leeds. Didn't see any in York the other day. Going to Manchester tomorrow and keep an eye out. Is this a Leeds Look? Am I imagining it?

Got me wondering if there any other microtrends that are tied to a particular city? I don't mean cultural stereotypes please, just actual observations.

Ooh, I will look out for this next time I'm in Leeds. I'm a fan of the ditsy print myself but don't think I've worn one to Leeds lately.

Mmmcheese89 · 21/06/2025 09:10

I used to work in headingley, Leeds student area. We would have popular trend pass for a few months at a time. Skinny jeans with a oversized 'vintage' jumper etc. They all looked samey but made it easy to know what to stock.

Floisme · 21/06/2025 09:24

I think that, if you live in northerly UK, you tend to buy fewer summery clothes because what's the point when summer might only last for 2 weeks? So, when a heatwave catches you out, you improvise with what you've got, and I can imagine spotting someone on the bus and thinking, 'Ooh I've got a skirt like that somewhere', and then someone else sees you and does the same, and so on...

Of course it doesn't explain why it's a Leeds phenomenon but I'm pleased to hear that street style might still exist at a local level and that not every trend is social media driven. Now please don't go and spoil it by telling me it's a Leeds Tiktok or Whatsapp thing.

We noticed the tracksuit bottoms and long socks pulled right up when we were in Liverpool. Also the amount of men on match day who are not just in the Liverpool shirts, as you’d expect, but they were in absolutely full kit - top, shorts, socks - as if Klopp (as was) might be about to call them up!

I was also full of admiration for the women who were just going about their day in the city centre with a full set of rollers in.

NotsosunnyShropshire · 21/06/2025 10:32

Last time I went to Leeds it seemed that absolutely everyone was wearing Dr Martens.

Round here it’s either skin tight lounge suits/tracksuits in pastel colours or the floor length vest style dresses atm.

I saw someone wearing this skirt with a fitted white t-shirt in Chester this week - not sure if it's bias cut but it was just below the knee on them.

I used to wear these in the 90s - loved that fit! Really flattering.

Disturbia81 · 21/06/2025 11:17

Not seen it but I love it

Bilbo63 · 21/06/2025 11:31

I live in a seaside town - many young girls are currently wearing thong bikini bottoms in the current heat. They leave nothing to the imagination.

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/06/2025 12:06

Wow thats a full late 90s look I wore when I was temping while waiting for exam results!

CromartyForth · 21/06/2025 12:12

Also missing point of thread, but @mintgreensoftlilac can you tell me more about Uniqlo opening in Leeds? When and where? Very excited to hear this.

Shenmen · 21/06/2025 12:15

I'm literally arriving at Leeds station now so will report back 😁

I worked in buying and we used to sent certain things to certain stores eg what sold well in Liverpool wouldn't do so well in Brighton.

That’s really funny. I’m from Brighton and when I visited Liverpool last summer I was GOBSMACKED by the difference in what women wore just going for coffee with mates etc.

Here it’s all DMs, Birkenstocks, Mary Jane’s and trainers, with dungarees, Levi’s and layers. In Liverpool the women were (generally) dressed to kill. Tight, short clothes and heels. Full glamour and fake lips. I am sure if they visited the North Laine they would think we are all rather crusty 😆

It's this sort of look, but shorter skirts more like knee length, although this might be the way they hang in real life. Like I say, nothing groundbreaking at all.

Good lord! This is what I was wearing I the mid 80s!

Bias-cut skirts with white baby tees were very popular about 25 years ago, and 90s / Y2K looks are trendy at the moment.

Opening where House of Fraser was on Briggate...student accommodation above.

My regional micro trend, Manchester (specifically Piccadilly gardens), male youths with their tracksuit bottoms tucked into their socks. Socks pulled up quite high.

Now I really really need a laugh emoji.

MoominUnderWater · 20/06/2025 23:41

This sort of thing, I do actually style mine with Mary Jane’s and socks as well. 🤣

It reminds me of Lou thingumy that was on Last One Laughing. She has fun style.

LynetteScavo · 21/06/2025 15:40

I meet a with a lot of teachers through work - the ones in their thirties often wear skater dresses (with leggings in winter). I don’t know anyone in RL who wears skater dresses. I always wonder if they wear them at the weekend too, or if it’s their “office wear”.

NormaSears · 21/06/2025 16:01

@LynetteScavo , but what did the art teachers wear?

3luckystars · 21/06/2025 16:11

I love it too and can see this ‘Leeds Look’ catching on here in Ireland. I’m going to order one of those skirts this week!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2025 16:34

I don’t know any teachers who wear leggings and dresses. It’s a horrible look imvho. People on here talk about it, but I rarely see it in real life.

Unfortunately we dont all have the legs for dresses without leggings! If i didnt wear leggings id never be able to wear anything higher than below the knee 🤣

Why not tights though?

I wear mini dresses with tights, or longer dresses without tights. If it’s too warm for tights, surely it’s also too warm for leggings?

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/06/2025 16:53

Croydon facelift baby!

3luckystars · 21/06/2025 16:55

What is that? I know a man from Croydon!
