The Leeds Look and regional microtrends

Lighthearted, but...

Right, I know people will wear this outfit in other places, but I live near Leeds but travel a lot for work, and in the summer in Leeds I see so many women wearing specifically a knee length bias cut skirt in polka dot or ditsy floral, with a white slim cut t-shirt. I hardly ever see it anywhere else, but I just counted 4 in 10 minutes in Leeds. Didn't see any in York the other day. Going to Manchester tomorrow and keep an eye out. Is this a Leeds Look? Am I imagining it?

Got me wondering if there any other microtrends that are tied to a particular city? I don't mean cultural stereotypes please, just actual observations.

What is that? I know a man from Croydon!

Croydon FaceLift is a tight high pony tail that pulls your face back ( probably gives you a headache )

I really like the Leeds look. As an aside I find it difficult to get a good plain white t shirt. I want one that has a good length of sleeve- still short sleeved though. Not see through. Cotton, or cotton mix with a v or square neckline and preferably slim fit or slightly fitted.
Round here women either wear floral midi dresses or a lot of younger women wear tight leggings and tight tops, often cropped. Often in colours which are quite dull and muted such as olive green or beige.

Daffodilsarefading · 21/06/2025 17:11

The very heavily made up look seems to have faded. Do too does the false hair with the big curls. I’m seeing women with shorter hairstyles.

Have a look in Uniqlo. Soon to hit Leeds! (Very excited at this news.)

This look sounds like my 2002 look. Skirt from Kaliko.

That’s really funny. I’m from Brighton and when I visited Liverpool last summer I was GOBSMACKED by the difference in what women wore just going for coffee with mates etc.

Here it’s all DMs, Birkenstocks, Mary Jane’s and trainers, with dungarees, Levi’s and layers. In Liverpool the women were (generally) dressed to kill. Tight, short clothes and heels. Full glamour and fake lips. I am sure if they visited the North Laine they would think we are all rather crusty 😆

The first time I visited Liverpool (from Devon) was about 20 years ago and I was fascinated by how glamorous the women were. All ages and all styles but beautifully styled hair, full make-up, manicured nails etc. Also amazed by how many tanning, nails and hairdresser shops there were.

Blingismything · 21/06/2025 17:21

Exeter-lots of satin bias- cut skirts, cropped vest and Birkenstocks. Lots of slicked back ponytails. Bridport - lots of vintage/well worn linen, denim and ‘Made in Italy’ cotton/linen mix dresses/smocks.

I was about to say that I live in Leeds and haven't really noticed it, but then I remembered that I try not to look at people in case they try to talk to me 😅

Also missing point of thread, but @mintgreensoftlilac can you tell me more about Uniqlo opening in Leeds? When and where? Very excited to hear this.

Yes opposite Zara! Not sure on timescales but I’m hoping it will be soon!

Mollysocks · 21/06/2025 18:44

Im originally from Cardiff but now live in London and when I go back I do see huge differences in how women dress, especially in a night out. South Wales in general seems to follow the more Northern style of tight dresses, a lot of fake tan and heels. I feel like such a scruff honestly 😄

Kirbert2 · 21/06/2025 18:49

My son spent 10 months at Leeds Children's Hospital until January this year and we are regularly back for check ups and the only unique thing we spotted was how every other person seems to be dressed up in costumes when going out at the weekend.

I don't live in Leeds but live nearby and haven't noticed women dressing differently in Leeds.

Is anybody in Belfast? Wondering how dressy people tend to go for in the evenings, as we're off to a 'nice' restaurant there soon.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 21/06/2025 19:21

I was in eastbourne the other day and all the teens were in black vest tops with short denim shorts and platform trainers. It made me chuckle as there were so many it looked like a uniform!

Micro cultures do occur I'm sure. I'm pretty much always in work wear if I'm in town which is suits so I never fit in!

I would say dressy in Belfast, you can’t go wrong, and can I recommend you watch Danni Walsh on instagram, she is absolutely HILARIOUS on her nights out. She does ‘pre drinks’ videos

’Let me show you what we are darrrinkennn’ in that lovely accent.

her name is danniwalsh123, she is priceless. I hope you have a great time in Northern Ireland

I meet a with a lot of teachers through work - the ones in their thirties often wear skater dresses (with leggings in winter). I don’t know anyone in RL who wears skater dresses. I always wonder if they wear them at the weekend too, or if it’s their “office wear”.

I go in and out of schools for my job (and was a teacher for many years) and this is 100% the primary teachers’ uniform round where I live! I’ve worn many variations of this outfit.

I'm from near Leeds and my daughter wore this look as a teen 2 or three eyears ago- sourced from the many second hand and vintage shops in Leeds- it's a very retro 90s inspired look.

Yeah was going to say this all looks and sounds very like what I wore in the 90s (ad it happens, that was up in Yorkshire and Leeds was my nearest big city to go shopping in…). Love this thread, fascinating.

Wonderfulstuff · 21/06/2025 20:36

I wore that exact look in the late 90s/early 00s. I had a lovely black with pink flowers knee length bias cut skirt with a coordinating black skinny rib top from Etam!

Chonkadoodle · 21/06/2025 21:15

I think Northern women look fantastic. They have a natural confidence and joie de vivre that is rarely seen in the south.

Fallulah · 21/06/2025 09:59

We noticed the tracksuit bottoms and long socks pulled right up when we were in Liverpool. Also the amount of men on match day who are not just in the Liverpool shirts, as you’d expect, but they were in absolutely full kit - top, shorts, socks - as if Klopp (as was) might be about to call them up!

I was also full of admiration for the women who were just going about their day in the city centre with a full set of rollers in.

I live near ish to Liverpool and have never seen an adult man in the full kit 😅 where the hell was this?

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 21/06/2025 22:02

I was struck recenely visiting Liverpool by the number of women wearing dresses. I actually think it was the dominant type of outfit, with fewer wearing separates, skirts or trousers. They all looked amazing and confident, too.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 21/06/2025 22:07

Another regional trend from Norwich that struck me (admittedly this was last year so probably out of date by now) was how many young women were wearing baggy dungarees over a thick strap vest top. Way more than I've seen anywhere else. In general women's street fashion there seemed a bit more gender-neutral/less feminine than I've seen elsewhere.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2025 22:09

Thanks @3luckystars Ive been out in Belfast before, but only to pubs. It will be nice to have an excuse to dress up a bit.

curiouscat1987 · 21/06/2025 22:09

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2025 16:50

Why not tights though?

I wear mini dresses with tights, or longer dresses without tights. If it’s too warm for tights, surely it’s also too warm for leggings?

Tights are more see through, snag easily, dont hide the jiggle or the cellulite and you cant wear flip flops or sandals with them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2025 22:10

Bristol always fascinates me too. Always loads of people, men and women, in those brightly coloured, baggy hippy trousers. I rarely see those anywhere else.

They will be doing the Otley Run, a pub crawl through Headingley, a right of passage for all Leeds teenagers and students. I love driving through and seeing them all dressed up, though the number of minions gets boring!

I hope your son is doing well.
