summer maxi dresses that are modest (with sleeves and not backless)

I'm looking for modest summer lightweight maxi dresses.
I'm going visiting a rural and conversative area abroad with a friend who has family there. I've never been before but she tells me it's very conservative and best not to wear my usual holiday attire of shorts etc. So, I'm thinking of long maxi dresses with sleeves and not low necklines or backless.
Where can I get such dresses? I'm late 20s and 5ft 6, size 14. Ideally I'd need ones that cover me enough without needing to wear a tshirt or vest top underneath. The weather there will be baking hot, so don't really want to do layers. Any ideas?

I got this in h and m last week, it's quite cool (temperature wise) and doesn't show too much. Would something like that work?
(I see it's now reduced as well🙄)

Search Amazon/Shein/etc. Use the search term modest dresses as well as searching for longsleeved maxi. Shirt dress could also get you something.

It's hard to find stuff in the high street that isn't all arms out and deep cut.

Something like this? www.culturevulturedirect.co.uk/womens-clothing/sorrento-dress/

Laura Ashley used to be the place for just that type of dress. Are they still around?

Vinted. Filter by size, style and fabric.

I would be buying cotton or linen to keep you cool rather than manmade fabrics.

Cos has t-shirt dresses that are very modest. Crew neck, loose, elbow-length sleeves, very comfy. Three colours (black or orange or stripey. There are side slits to the n knee but you could sew these up.

Dove dress from Dancing Leopard. Lots of colours, very classic maxi shirt dress. Machine washable and doesn’t crease. I have 4 or 5!

You could also add a simple linen shirt over dresses that have straps.

Branleuse · 20/06/2025 22:15

Maxi skirt with a tshirt might be easier

DrAmanitaPhalloides · 20/06/2025 22:18

Tesco.

They're polyester. I don't have an issue with polyester- there's some very good quality polyester- but it's not a material for a summer dress in very hot weather.

And another.

I have this one. Sizing is very generous. I normlly take a 12 in dresses, and the 12 I ordered was a tent on me so I swapped it for a 10, and it is still tent like.

Where are you going? What is deemed acceptable can vary - eg where my husband is from in India maxi dresses are all viewed as nightwear. To look acceptable there linen trousers with a long three quarter sleeve tunic is usually better.

I like the milk maid dresses from new look. Jersey and good length. Slight pouffy sleeves and nice prints

Try https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/womens/dresses/

I got some belters last week. Ordered Sat, delivered Wed, as they didn’t have my size in my local store.

Mountain Warehouse dresses are all short. I'm 5'7" and they are well above the knee on me.

BigDahliaFan · 21/06/2025 08:25

Yes, where are you going. A lot of places trousers and tunic top would be more appropriate than a floaty dress.
